I would tell my child to tell us or the teachers. I would prefer he told both. If it is a small child, I would be more understanding because the child may not understand what they are doing is wrong. However, if the child was older I would flip out more.

I cannot help but respond that I would find the kid, give him an incredibly stern talking to, and then speak directly with the kid's parents. If there was no change, I'd report it to the school as well as the authorities.

I'd also instruct my child to very firmly and loudly (so all around can hear) say "NO! STOP DOING THAT!" every time it happens, and let their teacher and me know every single time.

This kind of behavior, I think, is excusable and can be chalked up to curiosity one or two times. But a pattern can't be anything but destructive and traumatic for BOTH parties.

My first thought was simply 'kill them'. But really i would do whatever i could to make it stop and get justice of some kind. I work with abused and traumatized kids, so I definitely realize that it is not until they satrt acting out that many mids are identified as a victim of abuse. I have no tolerance for the school age harrassment that seems to be overlooked.

I will teach ds that no one should touch him without his permission and that he should tell me if someone does, but also never to touch other kids either. Play can get rough or inappropriate quickly (even if its unknowingly or unintentional) so I plan to supervise ds with other kids at public places closely.

@chopsuey119: good question! wow, now that you bring it up, i have been touched inappropriately but only by other boys of the same age at the time. it was SO common in grade school. i never ever thought to tell my parents. it was just so out in the open that it seemed like all the boys in my school harassed the girls so i guess it just seemed normal to me. a lot of it was school yard antics and it didn't affect me that much but maybe it did other little girls. i will definitely have to remember to teach my daughter about these things.

Wow... While I did know a child molester when I was little (he tried to pull something, but I knew better than to go off alone with someone), somehow I never thought of little kids harassing each other. If it's a kid... I have no idea, aside from ensuring they NEVER see that child again and that the parents of that child know it's an issue (I imagine there'd be more to it, but I don't know what.) If a teen or adult touched my little one inappropriately, I'd do my utmost to get the bastard behind bars, fired from his/her job, publicly known for what he/she is, etc.

@mrbee: Yeah, she has been an attorney for abused/neglected children for over 25 years. I have NO IDEA how she does it, and stays sane when all she sees day in and day out is horrible, horrible stuff. She's an amazing woman!

I started telling LO that no one can touch her "there" when she was 2. We talk about it during bath time.

Boys in my elementary school were inappropriate too, but I guess back then I thought it was just boys being boys (puberty stage). It's worrisome, but not so much compared to adult molesters and pedophiles.

@Rubies: Oh my gosh. SO TERRIBLE!!!! Really makes me angry that your little self had to go through that. @Mrs. Marbles: Crazy how most never say anything.. I hope we can all teach our LOs to come to us if anyone ever makes them feel uncomfortable/touches them inappropriately!
@owlmom: Thanks! I feel like it's getting worse nowadays with technology. A woman I worked with was horrified when her 13 yr old daughter came to her and showed her a picture message that a boy had sent her! He sent a pic of his peepee!
Talk about traumatizing.

I think a lot of little kids (especially girls) had to deal with similar stuff, and never told (I didn’t). We had lots of boys at the Catholic school I started at flip up girls skirts and make suggestive comments. There was a little boy in my elem. school that would try to touch girls - turns out he was being molested at home.

I hope LO would tell me anytime she feels uncomfortable – and will stress the “bathing suit” rule and keeping open, nonjudgmental lines of communications, but unfortunately I don’t think there is any way to make sure your kids tell you stuff like this.

If I found out about an incident, how I would react (after getting all ragey to myself!) would depend on the what/who. If it was another young child, I think I would probably speak to their parents, teachers/school or whatever adults were supervising first, and try to be calm about it. My MIL is an attorney for abused children, and more often than not her little clients are only found out as victims themselves after they start acting out inappropriately. If it was an adult, I would want to know what their version of the situation was (well, depending on what LO said), but I would also want to involve their supervisors and/or the police immediately.

omg i remember there was a little boy in elementary school that would lift up all the girls' skirts. i don't think any of us told on him. my parents never talked to me about things like that!

i would kick the other kid's ass.

seriously though i'm going to talk to my kids about this at as early an age as possible. if something ever happened with another student, i'd talk to the principal, teacher and the other kid's parents.

when i think back, girls are targets of sexual harassment from when they're just babies! i have SO MANY CRAZY true stories of things that happened to me. so sad.

Kill them? Not really, but I would certainly want to. Definitely will try to teach LO to tell us if someone touches her inappropriately. If it's a child her age, I would inform the parent and the school. If it was anyone older than her, I would call the police. Btw, I'm sorry you dealt with that as a child - good for you for having the courage to tell his mom.

This is a huge concern of mine as I feel that kids rarely tell their parents about incidents like this, yet I know most of my friends have had similar stories about inappropriate touching (i.e. on the subway or by a stranger) and just kept mum about it.

From an early age, I hope to instill in LM that it is inappropriate for anyone to touch you anywhere your bathing suit doesn't cover and if someone does to tell me about it.

I honestly don't know how I'd handle it though. If anything, I'd have to really check myself so that I don't get raging angry.

When I was 4, I had a Korean halmunee (grandma) babysitter who didn't speak English. Her grandson, maybe age 5-6 was also being watched by her and he used to chase me around trying to pee on me! He had his little weiner out and I used to cry and cry because the grandma thought it was funny. I used to lock myself in the bathroom to get away from that boy. I never told my mom but she never understood why I would cry EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. when we had to leave to go to her.

Likewise, I will make sure LO knows to tell me if something is wrong.

When I was in preschool (3-4 years old), a boy named Curtis tormented me. He would pull my skirt up and grab at my private parts whenever I walked by him in the school bus. I hated it and remember RUSHING to the bus every day so I could get on first.

I never told my parents.

One day his mom came with us on a field trip and I told her.
He stopped bothering me after that.

I'm going to make sure our LOs tell us if someone touches them inappropriately, but I'm not sure how I'd handle it. (Probably go to the authorities?) I know DH will see red and want to hurt the person.

What would you do?
