I get really annoyed when people who are painfully bad end up on those shows and their family is there with them! I think that it’s really insensitive of the family to let them put themselves in that situation. If my kid wanted to do something like that I’d help them follow their dream by getting them involved in a choir group or voice lessons I think.

@artbee: Good point about the kid possibly being more talented than you think they are. I might be critical of my kids because my parents were very critical. I think that's why I don't know what I would do in this situation.

If they were bad, I wouldn't want them to go national TV and face humiliation. It would be better if they faced humiliation on a smaller scale first, like a local talent show.

No I wouldn't let my kid go on American Idol if I thought they were a bad singer. I actually get really upset when I see young kids on the show who are terrible and I wonder how their parents could let them be humiliated like that. I would rather they be softly let down by me than have Randy Jackson tell then they suck on national TV.

I'd let them do it. I don't want to be the one to kill their dreams and have them resent me for it. Besides, what if they're more talented than I thought ... its very subjective.

Haha! I'd tell them no! Even if it means I'd be the most uncool, mean mom ever. I hate reality shows and think that they just exploit people to get good ratings.

Or any other type of reality tv show?

And you didn't think they were that talented?

I see how you should be supportive and tell them that they can be whoever they want to be. But, what happens if it they are completely devastated by being rejected.

I think if they wanted to do it I think I would be supportive but I would tell them to be cautious that they might not feel the same way.

I don't really like reality tv shows so maybe I would persuade my child to show off their talents on a less public event. Like a talent show or something.
