If we were pretty distant than I wouldn't worry about it. It would be hard if we were closer in relation because we are married and in love so it's not like I would just leave him!

I have my DHs family tree going back 900 years and don't see any possible overlap with my family. My grandparents were first cousins. A generation or so ago it was not uncommon at all.

If I found out we were 1st cousins I would probably have a massive freak out and do genetic screening. Anything further than 1st cousins and I don't think I would freak out.

DH's family is from Italy and mine is all from the UK so.. yeah, we're not related. lol.

If we were, I think I would be a little weirded out.

If I were in your friends' situation it wouldn't bother me at all. Even if first cousins were to marry each other, the risk of genetic issues for their children wouldn't be much different than non-related people. It's more due to social taboo reasons that cousins no longer marry each other these days than anything. Not that I would want to marry my first cousin lol just throwing that out there for perspective. Being distant cousins with my DH would not be an issue for me, though I probably wouldn't go around advertising it or anything haha.

it wouldn't bother me at all unless it was something recent like "oh you are great aunt cindy's nephew and i'm her niece" where you could put names and faces to the family line.

Not possible. He's Italian and I'm Irish/Norwegian. IF we somehow were, I don't really know what I'd do...

My aunt knew a brother and sister (probably in their 70's now) who got married and had many children, even though their kids kept being born with disabilities. They said they couldn't help themselves.

We know our family trees well enough to know for certain that we aren't first or second cousins. We do have some overlap in our heritage (for example we each have a Scottish grandmother) so I guess it's possible that we are more distantly related but at that point it wouldn't bother me.

Someone would have some explaining to do since DH is African (his parents came to the US shortly before having him) and I'm northern European (but family has been in the US many generations). So I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be a possibility for us.

Our families came from different parts of Europe, so I don't think it would happen. But it would freak me out.

It wouldn't matter to me if i found out my husband was actually related in some way to me I saw a program on National Geographic that the chance of genetic abnormalities between first cousins is only 1 to 2% higher than non-related couples and of course that decreases the farther apart the relation is.

DH and I signed up for 23 & Me (DNA test) not long after we got married. We ended up as either 3rd or distant cousins. I just figure its a common Jewish thing, most people are related in one way or another to eachother. There is no way to ever figure out how, so thats distant enough for me :)

@artbee: MIL's maiden name is my last name. DH is first generation, they're from Holland (they're Dutch-Indonesian). My family is not Dutch, not even close. When we got married DH took my name because his dad wasn't the best guy and he always wanted to take his mother's maiden name. We got a phone call when we left city hall after filling out our marriage license - the clerk thought that we made a mistake! haha

My grandparents (also Ashkenazi Jews from villages near each other in Eastern Europe) were 2nd cousins. We all turned out fine :-) They found out I think after the met (or were set up), not like they grew up together. It's probably more common than we think!

DH is very into genealogy and was helping some friends do research for their family tree. The husband and wife did a DNA test and when it came back......... they were cousin matches for each other. They are both Ashkenazi Jews and we all tend to come from the same places in Eastern Europe so when you think about it it's not really that surprising. They aren't first cousins or anything obviously, and they'll probably never be able to find out how they're related because records just don't go back that far. But it's still pretty weird to me.

This is why I told DH that I would never take that DNA test. He's already done it. What would you do if you found out you were related to your DH?
