I wouldn't say anything. Dried dog pee isn't dangerous. The fire hydrant might be less disease ridden than other stuff because peoples germy hands are less likely to touch it ;).

@MamaMoose: Yah I didn't say anything... but has there ever been a fire hydrant that isn't peed on regularly?

Our neighborhood has a million dogs, and they are constantly peeing on the fire hydrants because the trees are generally protected by little fences.

If it was something else that I know is covered in pee, then yes, I probably would mention something if I was close by. But like you mentioned, fire hydrants are notoriously covered in pee so I would assume the Dad already knows this and doesn't mind and not say anything.

I wouldn't say anything. Following that thought line.. kids shouldn't touch the grass, rocks, or anything else along a sidewalk... dogs pee everywhere! Kind of gross, but I'm sure the parent was going to wash her hands when she went inside!

No I wouldn't say anything. As you said you were just assuming it was covered in dog pee. The dad could have/should have made the same assumption but didn't. It's gross but the kid's life wasn't in danger so I would leave it alone.

I probably wouldn't say anything, because like @MrBee I prefer not to intervene into other people's parenting unless it is a really major thing.

If it was someone I regularly saw at the park and had maybe made small talk with in the past, I might do like @Rubies and say "Oh no! I saw a dog pee on that before! Do you want a wet wipe for her?"

If I had personally seen the dog pee on it, I would run over to the parent and says, "oh my gosh, I just saw a dog pee on it! Here, would you like a wet nap?" I would just try to be helpful because *I* would appreciate it if someone warned me. BUT, if I didn't see the dog pee on it then I wouldn't say anything.

I wouldn't say anything but if I could catch the kid's eye I might say 'don't touch - that's yucky' or something :)

Weekends are always interesting in our neighborhood, because you see a lot of dads alone with their kids (especially in the mornings). Well this morning while going on a family walk, I saw a dad and his daughter playing. The daughter was touching the fire hydrant with her bare hands, and was I'm sure getting her hands and dress covered with dog urine. It was so gross!

But I didn't say anything. I believe in not intervening unless a child's life is at risk. And even then, I try to exercise extreme caution.

Still though, I did kind of wish I could have said something. What would you do if you saw a little kid playing with a fire hydrant covered in dog pee? Would you say something, or just live and let live?
