@Mrs. Pen: That's great she is understanding. I feel like to keep goodwill, I would still try to use her once a week or so to get my schoolwork done uninterrupted and then also house chores so the days you have with him are totally you and him!

@Mrs. Pen: Have fun with him this summer! And it's nice that your sitter is available if you need to have her watch him a day here or there so you can run errands or do school work, and he can get a change of scenery. Great situation!

@matador84: are you a teacher?

I talked to her today when I picked him up and she was more than okay with us taking the summer off and still offered to watch him whenever we need if something comes up - so I'm getting super excited to spend the summer with him! It will really be the only time I'll get to do this; I'll graduate in December and then be working.

Def take summer off! I can't wait now that mine are 1 and 2 this summer will be a blast. Plus I'll save $1200 month on daycare for two months.

@Mrs. Pen: If you pull him completely you can no longer guarantee that she wouldn't watch another child since you no longer have a contract with her. Jus talk to her and feel out her reaction. You just have to know you run the risk that if you pull him completely she may seek out another arrangement to keep her income coming, and therefore you may not get your spot back in the fall.

If I *could*, I would keep your LO in daycare twice a week, and as others said, have some time to yourself! You are still in school, afterall.

I do work in education and I know lots of people who keep their kids in daycare throughout the summer to keep their spot. But since my daycare gives the option of letting teachers take the summer off, I would feel like a bad mom if I did that when I am home all day, so LO stays with me.

@regberadaisy: yeah the tuition is less with her than it was at the center. She wouldn't watch another child, that was something we agreed on when we hired her because it would be illegal. And she was aware of our original plan to drop him down to two days because I told her I'd still be taking one class, and try to work one day a week. When I got this other position in healthcare, they said they are so short-staffed and always have availabilities for extra hours, but my manager apparently changed her mind on the policies for picking up hours.

@edelweiss: nope - it's a SAHM that watches him, and he's the only child she takes care of, other than her two children. Right now I guess the biggest downside would be if she had planned on this income through the summer - she knew it would be half-time, but not that I might possibly take him out completely. So I will definitely have to talk to her and see what she thinks.

I do think I want to keep him home - just to spend time with him after this crazy year, and of course the savings will be great since we'll have preschool to pay for and my tuition again come fall... It would be nice to have the opportunity to make a little extra $$ this summer, but I don't know where to look or if that's something I want to do, you know?

@edelweiss: agree with you on the sitters reaction. She might be counting on this income for the summer. If you pull him she might end up picking up another kid. Would she want to watch more than one come fall?

Would she even let you drop him down to 2 days?

Personally I would look around for a seasonal job first and see if it's worth it. If it was daycare it's probably not but I think in homes are cheaper right?

it sounds like you want to keep him home. what are the downsides to you for pulling him out of daycare? if he's going to lose his spot at daycare, that's a big enough reason to keep him in daycare. if you're concerned about your childcare provider's reaction, maybe you could talk to them and see if they have a waitlist because there may be another child wanting to join for the summer and take your LO's spot just for a few months. or is there another online class or something fun you could do for yourself?

@Mrs. Pen: In college I was a summer camp counselor (at day camps, not overnight). A lot of my co-workers were teachers that wanted to make money during the summer. And their kids got to go to camp for free. Maybe something like that would be an option?

@Smurfette: They told me that's not allowed. One coworker said she would like to take PTO and just have me work for her during the week and they said we can't do that.

Honestly I don't really want to look for another job, go through training, etc and then leave in August. Plus, would a part time seasonal job even justify the cost of daycare? Aren't most of them minimum wage or around there?

@Mamaof2: haha. Now that he's 3 I think he's so much fun and since I've spent so little time with him during this nursing program the idea of spending the summer with him does sound fun to me :)

You could always do temp work during the week – I was always able to pick up work while in school on short notice. Plus a lot of people take more time off in the summer, so more businesses might be looking for temp workers!

I would keep him home with me and look into other programs for him for the summer just to mix things up a bit. (For example, DS is currently in a gymnastics class and an art class two days a week and it's a lot cheaper than day care would be for those two days or even mornings.)

So in January I transferred to a new position that allows me to only work e/o weekend in order to accommodate my nursing school schedule. My program is full time during the week, and then working weekends has been a much better situation than last semester while I was working a weekday job while also having classes/clinicals the same day...

anyway with school ending for the summer in four weeks I was going to see if I could pick up extra work during the week, and drop J down to half-time in daycare... well work said they don't have any open positions to increase hours so I'm stuck with only working weekends. But that means I am totally free during the week now. I had planned to keep J in daycare 2x a week, but now I feel like I shouldn't. It would definitely save money to keep him home for the whole summer, but my childcare provider was under the impression she would still be watching him over the summer. So I definitely need to talk to her about it - but I don't even know what I want to do.
I am still taking one summer class, but it's completely online and only five weeks long- so I can do the work while he naps/bedtime.

What would you do? Those of you who are in school or work as teachers - what do you do for the summer?
