@Beebug: With my plan, you would have to position the couch so that there is enough room to walk behind it and have the "l" part of it closer to the kitchen so that way it will feel more open. But if you aren't putting your TV above the fireplace then my plan wouldn't work.

I would probably start from with the TV will go, then I'd design the furniture around it.

@Modern Daisy: Wouldn't the room seem crammed if everything was down there? Also, couch in front fireplace would block entry to room, and we probably, definitely won't put couch above fire place! Maybe I am misunderstanding :)

It's hard to say without actually being in the space, but I would probably start with a big l-shaped couch and ottoman facing the fireplace (where I assume you're going to hang your TV) then put two big comfy chairs and a table facing each other in the bay window area. That way the chairs can be moved closer to the TV if you have a lot of guests over, or they can be a separate sitting area for everyday use.

@NerdBee: Good call! We have one of the recliners in our bedroom now, and may keep one in there, but also could do both on either side. I don't think I will really get how long this room is until it's built!!

I would put the TV on the wall with the staircase and the L-shaped couch on the wall with the fireplace. The area with the bay window would be the play area for LO. It's nice to be able to see LO play while you're on the couch watching TV or chattig with guests. If your couch doesn't span the entire wall up the the fireplace, you could put your recliners on either side of the fireplace.

Our L-couch has chaise, if we were to put it on the longer section of fireplace wall, the chaise would be on the fireplace side, TV could go on wall with staircase on other side.

@MsLipGloss: Definitely agree! We need an ottoman, wish we got the matching one with the couch, could probably find a close match to the leather!

we have almost the exact same room in our new house! the end with the window we did a chaise lounge and bookshelf. The other end we have 2 chairs, couch, loveseat and TV mounted on the end wall.

@BeeBug: A chaise or large ottoman would work well as a transition furniture piece to marry the two spaces without separating them.

ETA: And give you additional seating options.

@Beebug: Yeah, I hear ya. Well, if you put the chairs sort of close to the back of the couch, you could have that whole bay window area as a designated kid play area.

@Bookworm: That's exactly what I'm thinking! But DH doesn't want to "separate" the room with couch, which I don't disagree with either.....

Play space for kid(s) that;s not right under TV is also what I struggle with!

Hmm. It's hard for me to visualize without being in there, but just from the floor plans and your furniture, I might put the two recliners by the fireplace as a relax zone, and to make it look nice for any guests coming through the foyer (no back of the couch to look at).

Could put the tv on the shared kitchen wall, and the couch facing that. That's all I got :)

We've purchased a new house, and DH and I battle over what to do with the living room. It is designated Living/Dining, but we do not plan to use it as a dining room until well down the road with kids grown up (we only have one now with plans for more, so that's WAY down the road). This house is a bungalow and we will be finishing the basement for a large family room, for now this space will be our main living space, big L-shaped couch, big TV, two leather recliners. Knowing furniture can change (or go to basement when finished) what would you do with this room in terms of how would you lay it out?

We could move the fire place, however with the changes we have already made to the floor plan ($$) we'd prefer to leave it where it is.

I have about eight pages of graph paper where I've enlarged this and planned the room far too many ways, none of which I'm even exactly set on, there is a level of awkward to it. The door in the top right is a walk thru to kitchen, the doorway bottom, right is near the front entrance. Not sure what entrance to the room we'd use the most, my guess is the kitchen entrance.
