@Shizaz: As some PPs have mentioned, I wouldn't leave the cat unsupervised with the kids again- even the sweetest of animals can snap and small kids put a lot of stress on pets by constantly touching them, pulling them, laying on them, etc. We had to have a time-out with our dog after she snapped at our daughter when she pulled the dog's tail for the ten billionth time. Our dog is the sweetest, cuddliest pup ever and we had never had a problem with her for the 6.5 years we had her before this happened. The dog was provoked and reverted to her animal instincts. She shouldn't be punished for not wanting to be abused, however she also can't defend herself against my kids. The dog lives with my parents for now until I can trust my kids. You may want to consider re-homing the cat because now that the cat has had it, this type of incident could easily happen again.

ETA: The dog did not actually bite DD- she snapped her teeth and growled at her.

I think you did the right thing, it's hard to say what I would have done in that situation. Better safe than sorry!

@Autumnmama79: @josina: I did just want to chime in on the suggestions about declawing the cat or putting it down. The cat should not be punished or killed for this, this was not the cats fault at all. You can't trust animals to be with children unsupervised like that. You can't tell the most gentle cat in the world not to defend itself when it feels threatened or is in pain. If the baby rolled over onto the cat, or grabbed the cat forcefully, of course the cat is going to react. If the cat was going around and attacking the baby unprovoked, then that is a completely different story.

OP, I'm glad to see that you said you would be more careful about having the cat around the baby. That should guarantee that this doesn't happen again.

I probably would have tried to contain the bleeding and then driven her to the ER or doctor (if I had help/DH around). If not, I probably would have done the same thing. Blood + head wounds = overwhelming! I'm so sorry!

I live half a mile from a major hospital so I probably would have driven her to the ED myself, but generally I think there's nothing unreasonable about you calling 911.

I would've definitely freaked out, but not called EMT unless it was life threatening.
I wouldn't put the cat down as pp suggested, that's a bit extreme. If you did want to do more to prevent it I'd just get her front claws removed.

I known how much even small head wounds can bleed, so I probably would have tried to get a better look before calling 911. But absolutely don't feel bad about calling. They'd rather come for something that isn't a big deal than miss something that is a big deal. Head wounds are tricky!

I would have called an EMT, especially with the amount of blood. I would also make sure that the cat does not sleep with my child anymore.

I would have called a doctor either way because I'd want their opinion on whether or not any medicine was needed - cat claws can be dirty.

@Mrs. Goose: she was hysterical so that made it that much worse, so much blood and tears
As far as the cat goes, she will absolutely not be in their room unsupervised any longer. We bought her from a breeder as a kitten, and I went into labor the next day. The two of them have been inseperable ever since. I was just saying yesterday that she is the best cat we could ask for with kids, they drag her around like a rag doll and she puts up with it. She has never ever done anything to a kid, adults are a different story though. She is a typical moody bengal, but puts her mood aside when it comes to kids. I have no idea whether Charlie rolled ontop of her or what.

@Iced Tea: The emt's told me that I was better calling rather not, but I still feel like that family tbat called 911 because their cat held them hostage. Funny, but not funny. I told them countless times how silly I felt afterwards but there was seriously a major amount of blood. She has a fairly deep puncture wound and a large scratch now, the scratch above her eye is still bleeding too.

I'm well aware that skin wounds around the head bleed a lot, so I probably wouldn't have dialed 911 right away. However, I think your response was not unreasonable, especially since you didn't know the severity since you didn't see it happen.

I would have done the same and freaked out. It's really hard with blood and when they're little because even a little wound can bleed a lot. Better safe than sorry.

What is your plan with your cat? Has he done anything like that before? We've had our cat for a few years before our baby was born and he nips at her sometimes when she bugs him and it freaks me out. Other than that he has been well behaved.

My youngest was napping, our cat (which we've had since the day before our youngest was born) was sleeping with her like she does every single day. I heard Charlie start screaming and ran in her room to find her covered in blood. Her entire head was gushing blood and I couldn't tell where it was coming from exactly, or if she needed stitches or...

So I called 911, they had me apply pressure and sent an emt, by the time they got here the bleedi g had mostly stopped. I felt so silly for calling them for what now looked like a cat scratch. It was scary, there was so much blood.

Do you think I overreacted?
