I think at 2, you can explain what's going on - i.e. here's the water but it's not time to wake up yet. The wake clock worked really well for us too.

I would have waited a little longer, and if the requests continued, brought water but explained that she could have the drink in her crib, but she needed to stay in there until 7/the green light on her clock went on/Mommy comes to get her again, etc. My son is only 15 months, but honestly unless I know for a fact he's sick, I don't go in there from when I put him in bed at night to when I get him in the morning. He does WAY better putting himself back to sleep if he doesn't see me, so going in is a surefire way to upset him even more. Good luck, and I hope she goes back to her normal routine tomorrow!

If she's in a crib but knows you can hear her I'd have waited a little bit then gone in. Sometimes depending on how things sound I might not respond to dd in the morning because she is in a bed and can come ask herself and usually does.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I definitely could see her doing it again because it worked this time. Sneaky kid.

@SweetiePie: thanks! I will let you know of it happens again. I think I'll let her go a little longer next time time

I normally do what you do - regardless of when he wakes up I won't go into his room before 7am. He rarely cries when he wakes up, but if he does I do know its because he's tired and I don't have a problem letting him fuss for a while. But if he did something new like ask for water I'd go in because I'd be worried he really needed it. So don't kick yourself too much :-)

If she does it again I might ignore because she may have discovered that it works to get you in there? And the third time I would start leaving a cup of water at night so its there when she wakes up.

Good luck! Let us know what happens (if she asks again and how you decide to handle).

I would have gotten her the water like you did. But your DD is anything like mine, the next time she has an early wake up shes going to try it again and I'd be more likely to try a little harder to ignore that one because I know she's just trying to get me to bring her to my bed. Not saying I would.let her beg for water for 30 minutes or anything but I'd just try to tune her out a little longer subsequent times.

@catomd00: Hmm, that certainly would be a solution if she asks again! This was the first time she's ever asked for a drink.

@Charm54: Lol, even if she'd FLIP out? I can't ever go in to her room because when I leave, she just loses her mind.

@Mrs.KMM: Yeah, maybe that would've been better. She threw me for a loop because she's never asked for anything before!

I'd probably wait for 5-10 minutes and see if she goes back to sleep. If so, she really didn't need the water. If she wasn't going back to sleep, then I'd probably go in with the water and then try to get her to go back to sleep a little longer.

This morning around 6-615 am, DD woke up crying. This happens about 75% of the time and I usually let her cry and she goes back to sleep for another 40 min. It's usually 5 min or less that she cries/whines. And crying upon wake up is usually a clear sign that she hasn't gotten enough sleep. DD is 2 yo.

What happened was she was crying and then asked, "me want a drink 'a water pwease" UGH. She said it a few times and I couldn't ignore that, so I brought her cup in knowing that she would freak out if I left, so I brought her to our bed, but she was up for the day (as expected). She took her normal nap and was pretty cranky when she woke up from it.

Would you have ignored the request to have her get more sleep? Or gone into her room?
