Do you know how to do increases and decreases and pick up stitches? I think baby garments are great for practicing new techniques because if you go wrong, you don't have to rip out so much :) I'd recommend these pants as a pretty easy and super cute project: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kanoko-pants. I've made them for a couple friends and everyone loves them! Knitting in the round can be a little tricky at first (look up the magic looping technique, though -- it's brilliant) but is a great skill to acquire if you haven't already!

We were gifted some beautiful hand knit sweaters and hats. As much as I loved the sweaters, they weren't very practical for us. Between waiting for them to fit and the material being thick, it only worked out for her to wear each one 1-3x before she outgrew them. It made me feel awful because I know they must have taken a long time. She also got some hats and those lasted much longer. So I'd say hats, blankets, and maybe a diaper cover for a newborn photo shoot or something special like a baptism gown (that's awesome @Jennimac:).

@sorrycharlie: so scary! i know someone who lost a family member when a long breathable swaddle blanket got wrapped around their neck during nap time. i'm glad your story has a happy ending!

I knit a couple stuffed animals for LO (a bear which I use in his monthly photos and an elephant). I'd say a blanket is a perfect project, though - my mom made LO a striped blanket. @Vegmama: I love that blanket, it's sooo nice.

My granny knitted a garland that we could hang in the nursery. Kind of like the flag garlands you see everywhere. It is really cute.

I like knitting baby sweaters, sometimes with a matching hat. There are blanket patterns I'd really like to try but all that yarn is expensive! Since LO isn't here yet I can't give feedback in what I wish people had knit for us.

Cute hats are one of my favorite things. I've knit 4 baby blankets for different babies, including one for DS. The problem if you are new is that it may be slow going. Sometimes something large like a baby blanket can get monotonous or discouraging and be annoying to finish. So if you like more instant gratification, you may want to check out little hats, shirts, booties, or even sweaters. Dolls can be fun, too.

@sorrycharlie: shoot that sounds so scary! I can't even imagine! Good PSA to use blankets with large holes though!!

Thread jack over!

@Vegmama: I love love love that blanket. The colours are awesome.

I don't knit but someone knit me these little booties and I think they are the cutest little things ever. I have no idea if they would be easy or hard!

@delight: it's a longish story (involving all the little details and surrounding info lol) but the basic idea is that she held the corner to her cheek, then got upset and rolled down the length of the crib, essentially TIGHTLY mummifying her face. She couldn't get the blanket off, and this was before she knew how to go from laying to sitting (this happened at 8.5 months), and was panicking/freaking out...making it even hotter in there, and harder to breathe. I almost died when I ran in there to see what was wrong (she was kicking her heels off the mattress, too). I couldn't - and still can't - stop thinking about what might have happened had I just assumed she was mad about taking a nap and left her. (she was in the corner of the crib I couldn't see w/ the video monitor). We have also since put the monitor almost at the ceiling to see the entire crib.

Sorry for the thread jack!! :(

One of my Aunt's knitted my five little woollen t-shirts / vests that my wee girl has worn from newborn through to now at almost nine months. They have hands down been the best knitting that we were given!

blanket? LO started wanting to snuggle a blanket in her crib around 6 months, and we had an incident with an A+A blanket. Now she is only allowed the knit ones (with the large holes) in there, cause they're so breathable!

I am a fairly new knitter and have knitted a few scarves and baby hats. We are TTC and I would like to knit something for our future LO. I would like it to be something practical. What do you suggest? What do you wish someone had knit for your baby?
