I've made them for a couple friends and everyone loves them! As much as I loved the sweaters, they weren't very practical for us. Between waiting for them to fit and the material being thick, it only worked out for her to wear each one 1-3x before she outgrew them. It made me feel awful because I know they must have taken a long time. She also got some hats and those lasted much longer. I've knit 4 baby blankets for different babies, including one for DS. The problem if you are new is that it may be slow going. Sometimes something large like a baby blanket can get monotonous or discouraging and be annoying to finish. So if you like more instant gratification, you may want to check out little hats, shirts, booties, or even sweaters. She couldn't get the blanket off, and this was before she knew how to go from laying to sitting (this happened at 8.5 months), and was panicking/freaking out...making it even hotter in there, and harder to breathe. I almost died when I ran in there to see what was wrong (she was kicking her heels off the mattress, too). I couldn't - and still can't - stop thinking about what might have happened had I just assumed she was mad about taking a nap and left her. (she was in the corner of the crib I couldn't see w/ the video monitor).
