Her bassinet-thing, crib, floor play mat, 2 bouncy chairs, swing, dresser/changing table, and I think that is it for our used stuff.... I am reusing the jogging stroller (got the car seat that goes with it from my mom), crib mattress, and glider.

We're getting an heirloom bassinet but I'm replacing the mattress and I don't intend to use the padding or skirts that goes along with it - it'll just be bare with fitted sheets.

I also picked up a few newborn clothes off of eBay. A seller had the most adorable little outfits and some were actually NWT, the others very gently used. She had the best selection of newborn sweaters and knits!

I wanted to buy a wooden rocker, it was antique and looked well made (perhaps homemade). But I procrastinated too long and it sold.

I'm open to things wooden but not extensively used and things that can be fully disinfected without too much work. No plastic toys for instance, since they're porous and takes effort to clean properly and they're normally pretty affordable (especially on sale).

I don't buy a lot of stuff used save art and collectibles, and while I'm open to hand me downs from people I know, I honestly wasn't planning to buy a lot of used items for LO either...until DH saw the prices of rocking chairs/gliders. Yikes! We went to Ikea to check out the Poang, since I heard it's a popular choice, but DH wasn't a fan. We ended up on craigslist that night to see what used gliders go for. I found a rare listing for a lightly used Dutalier for $75 (most in our area are upwards of $200 for lightly used). I asked DH to take a look today and an hour later he called me to tell me he bought it.

The glider and a hand me down stroller (Stokke Explory) from my aunt are the only large items we're planning to get used so far. They're also the only large items we have at the moment. :-P

I bought tonnes of used stuff - bumbo, exersaucer, swing, sling, toys, etc. Anything that can go in a washing machine or be wiped down is fair game.

I wouldn't buy cloth diapers, a car seat, or crib used.

But I agree with your mom, stop buying, let others buy for you! I got all my big stuff gifted to me. People are very generous when it comes to babies.

I would buy pretty much anything used, so long as it was in good condition. I would probably only buy cloth diapers from a friend, but other than that, I figure a good wash can get rid of all the bad germs, and anything else will just help strengthen babe's immune system ;)
Works for us, so far!

I have bought 85% of his clothes/shoes used; garage sales, thrift stores, craigslist, and hand me downs.

There is a lady my friend knows who is done having kids and when she found out I was pregnant (I don't even know her!) she just offered me all this baby stuff for free. Such a blessing! I got a baby bouncer seat, activity gym with toys, bumbo, tons and tons of toys, activity walker and exersaucer - for NADA!!

Another friend is lending me her swing.

My mom bought me the moby used which was totally fine with me!

changing table is used, his dresser used to be my dresser when I was little, his curtains are from a thrift store, his lamp used to be in our room and I had gotten it from a second hand store - then I spray painted it green, and I got some maternity pieces from maternity consignment stores.

That's all I can think of now. We really only had to buy about $500 worth of stuff total before he was born. We were soo blessed!

I plan on getting our high chair used. We have the following used items: changing table, bassinet, exersaucer, bottles, chew toys, musical toys (okay, TONS of toys), clothes (tons of clothes...) and miscellaneous things. Oh, the boppy pillow and cover were used, as well. People don't use baby stuff for very long so it's great to get get stuff in good shape used!!

sweet!!!! I"m totally into used. Especially because we get SO many hand me downs from friends and relatives. For toys we have a strict no buy policy. We get enough hand me downs and gifts for sure. We did buy or register for a lot of gear the first time around. We have a lot of really generous beautiful friends and family. :) There is very little we actually purchased new that cost more than $20.

@hilsy85: I'm not really into used things either, even if they've belonged to friends, people I know, etc. When I first started prepping for the arrival of our LO, I went against my own policy and bought a bumbo used for $10 that looked like it was in GREAT condition. I thought, 'How bad could it be? I'll just wipe it down...' Well, when we brought it home I realized it REEKED of cigarette smoke. So now I'm back to buying everything new.

We got a mobile gym (the mat toy thing) off Craigslist for $25 less than what the same one I was registered for was selling for new. Also bought a ton of clothes, glider rocker with ottoman, dresser and a breast pump on Craigslist. This past weekend, we went garage saling and bought a Pack N Play, changing pad cover, pacifier tethers, books, toys, swaddle and car seat mirror. My mom and I went to a baby consignment sale and picked up a bottle drying rack and infant life vest.
If we hadn't been gifted them, I would have tried to find a used exersaucer and bouncy seat.

i think most things are fine used. it's economical & eco friendly!

sheets/clothes/slings/baby carriers get sanitized in the dryer
most toys can be soaked or wiped down
things like mobiles or baby gates look exactly the same used & don't really get germy (i mean i'd still wipe 'em down)

i think the only things i wouldn't be comfortable with used would be:
carseat (unless it was a recent model from someone i was close to & knew it hadn't been in any accidents & had been well cared for)
mattress (even from someone i knew, used mattresses have been linked to increased SIDS risk)
pacifiers/bottle nipples (i'd be ok with glass bottles & replacing nipples though)
breast pump (unless it was a closed system one with new parts)
pack'n play (can't take fabric off to clean all of it)
high chair (unless it was from a neat freak that i was close to, they just get grungy)
diaper pail (those always stink after awhile!)

I haven't bought any thing used except for a few books that were practically new. I figure I can buy inexpensive clothes on sale that are just a fraction above the used clothes prices (I've checked). I have received some hand-me-downs from friends, like a baby rocker and some clothes. Love free stuff!! I wish I had more hand-me-downs actually! Sounds like you scored a lot of goodies! yay! :)

Honestly, I would probably only buy toys or books (and only plastic toys that I could wipe down). I never shop at thrift stores or garage sales for stuff for myself--I like being the first person to use stuff, lol. So I can't see myself doing it for my LO, unless it's from somone I know, like a friend or my sister.

We were gifted a graco snugride, cradle, bumbo, exersaucer, tub, and bouncy seat from the woman I babysit for. We bought a crib off craigslist (after checking to make sure it was not recalled and is safe). I'm hoping to find a swing and maybe a snap and go stroller now on craigslist or at a consignment shop. I also bought most of our cloth diapers off craigslist...they are in excellent used condition :) I love deals!

So far, I've scored a my little lamb bouncer for $25 (like new condition!), a mozart cube for $5, a rock and play sleeper for $30 (like new, a little bit of staining under the main fabric), a pottery barn kids crib skirt, bumper and pillow for $40, and a bumbo seat for $10. We're also being given a bassinet (from SIL), a Graco Quattro Tour Stroller (used 1x, from SIL), and a Chicco Keyfit 30 carseat (Cubes) from the woman I nanny for (it's only about a year old).

My mom told me to stop buying things until I have my shower. But I can't help but think, if there are things that people don't buy (let's say, a swing or an exersaucer), I could have scored it for 50% off!

What did you buy used for your LOs? What would you buy used?

ETA - I totally forgot, I got a baby k'tan for $20!
