I spent like 3 months largely in bed after surgery. It sucks.

I read a LOT of books, so I might grab some really funny books, like David Sedaris, or books on subjects she's interested in. Or a special pillow that lets you sit upright more comfortably in bed, or a Snoogle. I'd also get a neck pillow because you get a lot of kinks and cricks in your neck trying to look up at laptops or books while laying in bed.

A bed tray or bed desk might be helpful.

A backscratcher. An eyemask for when its bright out and she wants to sleep.

Lightweight cotton PJs! I bought 4-5 pairs of PJs and wore them 24/7.

My aunt gave me a REALLY soft blanket that I kept with me all the time like a lovey. It was warm but light and really soft. Another relative also gave me a small stuffed animal that believe it or not I liked to cuddle to nap with (and I'm not a doll person).

My friend also got me a bunch of different nail polishes, files, and cotton balls so I could paint my nails while laying in bed. Maybe also something like, some tweezers, lip balm, hair ties, and brush in a small cosmetic kit to keep by her bed?

My friend also got me a bell I could ring if I needed something from DH!

A cute canvas bucket or tote to keep all the things she needs handy, like remote controls, pens, pencils, etc.

A really long cellphone charger cord. Those Apple ones are SO dang short and they would get disconnected from the wall all the time. A longer one was super helpful.

Computer software to make your will and/or health directive. Might as well do something productive right?

In fact, a list of important things she can work on might be helpful to keep her brain engaged. DH did this with me while I was on bedrest and I had "homework" every day. Revising your legal documents, getting your health and life insurance stuff in order, making sure your beneficiaries on your retirement/insurance policies are current (i.e. not your parents), research 529 plans for college, order thank you notes, organize your digital photos, go get bids for more competitive health/house/car/life insurance rates (we do this annually and usually save money or get better coverage at the same price), etc.

You may not want to buy it for her, but you might also suggest skills she can develop while in bed. For instance, perhaps her DH might buy her a good camera and she can read books or watch videos online or take e-courses to learn how to properly use a fancy camera before her baby gets here.

@Cole: I like that craft idea! I'll have to look.
@swurlygurl: @psw27: Some kind of puzzle book or something like that would be good. TV definitely gets old!

If I was on bed rest I'd love puzzle books or something like @Cole: suggested. Even something silly like a paint by numbers would be interesting and kill the time.

@tlcbaby: It is! The woman normally did wedding parties and special events, so during the week it was really reasonably priced. It was awesome

I was going to suggest Sudoku or cross words too... I can only watch so much TV before my brain starts to melt. I think snacks and magazines would be great too!

I don't know if you already put this together or not but what about a small craft kit that she could do in bed? Sometimes they sell kits at the craft stores out you could print a tutorial off the internet and get her the supplies. Knitting/crochet are good as is cross stitch or embroidery, if she is having a girl she might like making hair bows. A tray might be useful too, sometimes a stable place to set things in bed odds helpful. I hope her bed rest of short!

Thank you all!

@Raindrop: Thanks - I didn't think about that. We use the comcast one here at home.

@junebugmama: I didn't even know that was a thing!

I don't really have a suggestion. I just wanted to point out if they have an iphone or ipad ... amazon has free streaming for a ton of movies and tv shows if you have the main prime account... a lot of them are commercial free.

Also if they have cable. Lot of cable companys have apps that stream movies and TV for free also... We have comcast and they do that.

Amazon and the itunes have tons of free books also for moblie devices. Though reading and watching TV might get a bit old after a while. I just wanted to point out free options :)

If she has a iPad or iPhone; a itunes gift card so she can order movies. Or maybe a one month free Netflix membership for instant. Or a gift card for online bookstores if she likes to read and has ereader?

A big water bottle with a straw, something to contain stuff at her bedside (preferably so she doesn't have to reach over to the floor), lip balm, a cooler bag. Personally my solution for magazines has been the Next Issue app! For like $9.99 a month I get access to so many magazines, I feel like I never run out.

I have a friend who was just put on strict bed rest today for at least a week and then they will re-evaluate. I want to send her a few things, but what would someone on bed rest really appreciate?

I was thinking magazines and snacks, but not sure what else?
