Are they local? Honestly the best thing anyone did for me when R was born (and I subsequently did for my friends on babies 2 and 3) was to invite the older kid(s) over for a playdate. Bonus points if you can pick them up and drop them back off so the parents don't have to do anything other than shove them out the door! ha The parents get some easy/one-on-one time with the baby, and the older kids don't even realize it's not something special for them ;)

@MrsF: Alex toys makes kits for things like monster puppets, sea creatures, etc. They're all contained and actually pretty easy for 5 year olds to do on their own. I like to have a few in my bag for restaurants and things when kids start to get bored.

@jape14: That's a great idea! We've had some that ended up ripped.

@maddyz: I love the idea of wrapping the kids things individually!

@gingerbebe: OMG yes to the drive through gift cards. That's perfect.

If you have a lakeshore or other teacher supply store near you - I just got a ton of activities for my 2 and 4 year olds to do independently while I'm busy with baby. Dot art markers with accompanying work book is the biggest hit so far + love those wikki stix things for no mess.

Ditto the planner / journal idea. I am always in need of a piece of paper + pen for trying to get organized. Protein or granola bars. Really anything that. @T.H.O.U. said, haha. I think she might have listed all of my needs.

Gift cards for places accessible by drive-thru or with an indoor play area for the other kids. Starbucks, McDonalds, Chik Fil A, Taco Bell, etc. Or a gift card to Chuck E. Cheese or some indoor play gym.

For the kids, what about Melissa and Doug reusable sticker books? My son is 3 and he has loved playing with them for the past year so it would be good for her 2.5yo. I saw a great trick on Pinterest to get an 11x14 art portfolio book on amazon and put the individual pages in them so they don’t get lost (they rip apart super easily).

Oh, there are craft/activity boxes you can get on amazon and I just saw one at target too. Would maybe be good for 5yo. We have one for my 3yo and he can’t do it totally by himself just yet but he’s getting close - it’s like a glue stick set with pictures and paper cut ours that you stick on the pictures. He really likes it so far. They also make a pipe cleaner one that he is too young for but again might work for 5yo.

First off, how incredibly sweet of your husband 😍 Mine is a great guy but he’d never think to do something like that.

For the mom, I don’t know that it’s necessarily “mom of 3” specific but I put together the following basket for my sister in law when she had her first in Feb:

- nice nipple cream
- a swell water bottle
- mothers milk tea
- kiehls hand lotion, body lotion and lip balm
- dry shampoo
- kind bars variety pack
- wine
- a bag of nice locally roasted coffee (got one decaf and one regular)
- I didn’t include but maybe fuzzy socks or something like that.
- also didn’t include but if she doesn’t already have Netflix or Hulu or something a few months subscription could be nice.
- Birchbox? Though not sure she’d have time to play with the products. I know with one baby I did but not so sure with more than 1 (I’ll know in a few months I guess! 😋)

For the kids, off the top of my head:
- matchbox cars, dinosaur figures, coloring books, nice new crayons maybe in cool/non-traditional colors, maybe a game theycan play together or independently like a matching card game, lacing cards, a few things of play doh with tools, a look & find book, sticker book, if they use iPads maybe an Apple gift card so she can get them a new app or two...I’ll keep thinking.

My best friend is due with her third in a few weeks and I’m having a hard time with a gift. She has made beautiful handmade blankets for my babies and... that’s not my skill set 😋. Her husband is also a professional chef so I feel a like me bringing them dinners might not be as helpful.

I had my third this spring and when my husband went back to work he gave me a big box full of things to help me get through those difficult moments with 3 kids under 5. My favorite candy, matchbox cars, stencil kits, squirt guns, a kids dvd - just things to pull out when I needed to bribe or occupy the big kids’ attention.

I’m thinking i’ll make two bags - one of things for Mom and one of things to entertain her 5yo girl and 2.5yo boy this winter while she’s nursing / caring for the baby.

What would you include?
