I would be hesitant to do a piñata if 2 of the kids will be riding during it. I know my kids would be so sad to miss the piñata!

My kids love crafts but could also entertain themselves if their friends were there and balls or ring toss stations were set out. I would avoid any organized activities.

What about wooden picture frames with stickers, glitter glue, and rhinestone stickers? Pictured is one I bought for my 5 year old son at Joann’s Fabrics. They were $1.99 each and probably require minimal instruction. They also make door signs.

@PinkElephant: you have a lot of awesome ideas here but yeah, I think a craft where no one really directs or supervises is ideal (and so - make it cheap!). They don’t have to sit down together, no one cares if they finish or how they approach, doesn’t require lots of oversight. I’m guessing most of our valentines got tossed immediately but it was fun and cute while they did it! And some kids who loved that stuff could stay longer than others.

@josina: I think you're probably right...I already had favors sorted, but oh well! If the reviews are right, at least half of them won't make it through the party anyway! :)

@NorthStar: Cute! And cheap! :) :) Thanks!!!

@Mrs. Champagne: Totally agree! I think they manage to keep the party area pretty separate from the (enclosed) horse arena. But it's a good reminder to check. I was kind of surprised when I saw that the place offers pinatas for sale to party hosts - so I am guessing that means you're free to do it, and they just tell you where is ok.

I would go to Michaels and get a small canvas and have them paint a horse or something. Or horseshoe. My daughter is around that age and she would take time to decorate and draw it.

Or "Pin the tail on horse"

Maybe some type of horse themed craft? Coloring a horse, painting a wooden horse, etc.

Lots of cute ideas. Just clear them with the place first - a lot of these in the same area as the horses would totally spook them and wouldn’t be allowed, fyi.

Planting flowers in little pots for each kid to take home is a cute idea!

following! My daughter is also having a horse party and was looking for ideas to keep the kids occupied.

I did just find these, which would be easy to decorate:

@PinkElephant: Since they're so cheap I'd probably do one per child and then have them keep them as a favor? Less drama so no kids are fighting over them. OR have enough for every kid minus 2 to 4 (the 2 that are riding the ponies/2 that are next up).

@PinkElephant: I think what you have planned is great but if you wanted to add a craft I would do a "paint a horseshoe" station - the place you are having the party should be able to provide used ones for free or cheap

We attended a party like this for a friend's daughter. She was much younger - I think they won the party at an auction and had to use it that year.... They set up a bounce house outside, and it was a big hit while kids were waiting.

@josina: Ooh, those could be fun! I was looking at hobby horses, but didn't want to spend $15-$20 apiece for the plush variety that was bound to get wrecked. Thanks! Do you think I need enough for all the guests, or that just having a handful (along with other things to play with) would suffice?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks! That's an awesome idea. I need to go see the party space this week and will add wall space for a craft to my list of things to check out. I'm sure the moms would also be thankful that this craft isn't one more thing for their kids to bring home :silly:

Oriental trading has some cheap blow-up horses that could be fun for the kids to run around with; they also have pin-the-tail on the horse, and a paper plate horse-craft kit.

Could you create a giant horse along an indoor or outdoor wall and the girls can decorate? Example: crayons, paint, stamps, paste & tissue paper, paste $ pom poms. There could even be a HBD ribbon or banner placed on the horse. Then after the horse is all decorated it can be used a photo backdrop.

Idea came from Pippy Long-stocking :silly:

@Silva: I had initially envisioned projects more like these when we were planning the party at home (and I could have one table for eating, one for crafting)....but hubby vetoed the horses at the house, haha. I think I could do something similar, but would need to simplify the decorating materials (stickers and paint pens, for example)

@bhbee: Thanks!

Yeah, the pinata definitely requires an adult - but I figured at least it is one adult for probably 5-10 minutes tops...and that it's something DH would be willing to do, haha! :) I am more leery of games that could go on and on.

It's interesting you had such good luck with the craft! We had a similar holiday playdate, and I feel like all the moms had to help the girls with their crafts, and it was hard to wrangle them to all sit down at once. Granted, this was at someone's house, where there were tons of toys. Maybe if it's more passive/free form like you described, it would be easier for them to filter in and out.

I'm also considering just getting a bunch of dollar store horses and leaving those out for the kids to play with as well. If the weather is nice, I kind of think they'll mostly just get sugared up and run around! :)

my kid could do art all day long. maybe something like painting flower pots, include a couple bags of potting soil and some seeds? you could just put it all out on a tablecloth on the ground. we did my daughters 5th bday party at an art studio for kids that was fairy themed. They had these tiny wooden bird houses that they called "fairy houses" for the kids to paint, you could do that if you were worried about the flower pots being finished quickly.
then easy activities like bubbles is a great idea. i'd go for stuff that can be pretty self directed.

One thing about a piñata is it requires more active management from you. Could be nice to pick something you can walk away from.

We helped host a kinder girls valentines party and I was shocked how long they stayed engaged with the craft (we also had a bounce house and cookie decorating/snacks). It was just heart doilies (which made for fancy coloring), stickers, markers and glitter glue. They did it standing up around a table. Easy and easy clean up if you have a tablecloth.

DD1's birthday is at a horse stable. The first 45 minutes are for pony rides (in a covered arena, so weather is not an issue); for the remainder of the party we have a party room where we'll have snacks and cake towards the end.

There will obviously be some (probably outdoor) downtime while the girls wait their turn for the ponies (we have 2 horses for 10-15 girls), so I was thinking of having some things like bubbles, punch-balloons, jump ropes, etc. out for the girls to play with while they're not riding. Beyond that, I'm trying to decide if I want another "planned activity" or not. I'm considering:

- a pinata
- some kind of organized game (race? ring toss?)
- a craft project (indoors)

What would your little one rather do? The girls are mostly six, with 2-3 four year olds also attending (but not the focus of this event). I'm leaning towards pinata & outdoor play, with maybe some crayons and coloring sheets inside for those who want them, since I think after ponies the girls may be too excited to sit down and do a directed craft (like make a necklace).

Other than the people managing the ponies, there is no party host, so I'm trying not to overcommit myself too much to needing to lead/organize lots of activities.

I appreciate any thoughts/input! Ideas for games/activities I haven't thought of are also totally welcome. :) Thanks
