My bank has a program where if you pay bills online they give you a percentage back up to $10/month - its not much but since I pay all my bills online it's nice getting something back.

@eeh: @MamaMoose: I completely agree, i think some banks are better than others though. i switched to a fee less bank and that alone saves me 250$ a year and they gave me 100$ for switching.

i definitely feel they are trying to help consumers rather then charge them insane fees/rates. That being said, I know it's a business and yes they are making money off us, but I rather have a bank that lets me make more with my money then one that doesn't.

They are asking for suggestions on how to improve their services and allow us to save more... hence why I ask this question here. :)

@eeh: Amen! I work in banking too and completely agree. I think the consumer needs to take full responsibility for saving and not rely on their bank to help them because your bank is a business can't always do what's in your best interest.

As someone who worked in banking for years as well as having experience with it as a consumer I think the best thing would be to NOT look to your bank as a place to help you save money. People tend to forget that banks are businesses, they are there to make money..not help you. I'm always highly, highly skeptical of any savings/rewards ploys because I've seen how they make up that money in terms of overdraft fees, check cashing fees, etc. It's a terrible thing but when I worked in banking and people's accounts were overdrawn and they had to pay fees we always joked that that money was going into our Christmas party fund. It was a good wakeup to me as a consumer that the bank does NOT exist to help me in anyway that doesn't make them money.

@blushink: Many banks do allow you to label your bill pay vendors into different categories (utilities, medical expenses, etc) but this can only go so far. For example if you pay off your Visa bill from your checking account, there is no way for your bank to know what portion of that Visa bill was spent on groceries, or clothes, etc.

For me personally I just have an auto transfer set up between my checking account and my savings/investment account every month. So when I'm spending I know I need to account for making sure that money is available for the automatic transfer.

Something like my credit union has -- if you have 3+ accounts with them, you get a higher level of membership and interest on checking and a higher interest rate on savings. That's what prompted me to open a money market account with them, which is just as liquid as their savings but has a higher rate of return. And now I get interest on my checking, too.

@Thehistoryofus: I completely agree!!!! I used minted for that but having it built it by the bank would be awesome.

Maybe having a built in budget system would work. Where anything you spend goes in a category and notifications when you've overspend.

I think it would just be better education and help to know where your money is and where it is going. I think so often people just simply don't know where there money is being spent. If you could get a monthly report (that was fairly accurate) that showed that of the $,4000 you had in income this money you spent $400 (10%) on eating out I think that would be a real eye opener to a lot of people.

Rewards don't really help the real issue.

@looch: a matching program is neat! I know when I signed up to my bank they gave me 100$ just for switching. Free money. Who doesn't like that?

The only things that would incentivize me to save more are things like matching programs with vesting periods and programs where you can buy a financial instrument and get another at either a discount or free, like buying a share of stock and getting an option on that share for free.

I already have a credit card with no annual fee, my bank offers a year end summary that shows spending categories and I don't really believe anything that's "cash back" really is free...they have to make up the cost somewhere, so it's either in higher interest rates in mortgages or loans or in fees.

A higher interest rate would be nice!! Ours is like .01%. but I've heard some people's banks are 5%+!!

I'm polling people to know what would be a crazy but awesome idea for a bank. As in something innovative that can help you as a consumer to be savers and grow your money. Maybe cash back debit cards, fee less credit cards or automatic budgeting (through your debit transactions)

I know there are some of these out there already, so I'm looking for a kick ass idea that might seem impossible in hope that my bank makes it possible. Ideas?!
