For work I would stick to a black dress, long pearls, and a fabulous headpiece. (I actually have a black fringe dress from a Halloween costume a couple years ago I could pull out as well)

Thank you all for the suggestions! @Willow those modcloth dresses are really cute without being costumey!

For a work thing, I'd wear a basic dress I already own that I like the way I look in, and buy some cheap accessories like a long pearl necklace and a flapper headband. Maybe costume gloves.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: Could you mix it up... maybe with a black fedora, black shirt and white tie?

I'd probably go in the other direction and do a silk dress with a plunging back and a fur stole.

Here are a few dresses that could work if you paired them with some of the accessories others have suggested?

Maybe Goodwill has some long baggy dresses that would work? and you could get some cheap strings of costume pearls.

I feel for you. A themed work party would be a nightmare in my book!

I have my work party coming up, and of course to make it more awkward, it's a theme party. I'm not going to dress in a full 20s flapper costume or anything but maybe I could find something that sort of fits into the style? I'm also self conscious because of course I don't think anything looks nice on me. Since having my son, my belly sticks out so much more but the rest of me is still small, so I usually look pretty frumpy- baggy butt jeans, etc. That's another issue, for now I need to figure out what the heck to wear to this party! :)
