ugh. this makes me so sad. we had my son at a daycare (now at a different, better one) and when i came he was crying and they were just like "he's been like this for a long time, he won't stop" but they had him like sitting by himself in a loud gym full of 5 year olds running around (he was 2 at the time). well no shit he's crying, he's probably scared and you left him by himself, assholes. but yeah, that's not okay. i definitely said something. and then when a few other things happened, we pulled him out.

@T.H.O.U.: my husband made sure to do that. He also made sure they know that she just needs a hug when she is inconsolable. She has never refused a hug when upset. Ever.

2 hours straight of crying is a LONG time. To be fair though, maybe they did try to comfort her and it just wasn't helping or making it worse (this happens with my DD sometimes).

But yea they should have called. When I drop my kids off when I know they are a bit off I try to reiterate, PLEASE call me if they are just miserable.

Not okay!

Like PPs, they would've sat with him, consoled him, etc. If he was still inconsolable, they would've called me.

@winniebee: @regberadaisy: @Mamaof2: yeah. my thoughts exactly. Well, mine were more on the anger side. The teacher told us she was crying all afternoon!! She wasn't sick. I'm like - are you punishing us for leaving or something??

@yoursilverlining: @JoyfulKiwi: @Adira: it was my kid. She's 3.5. It is totally out of her normal behavior. No one called. I'm pissed and thankful she only has 6 days left at this daycare.

@gingerbebe: @winniebee: Our daycare sounds like yours. If a kid is crying hard for longer than like 30 minutes, they assume something bigger is at play (sickness) and call the parent. You don't have to get your child early in that situation, but I've gotten that call once that LO "was just not herself after naptime" (wasn't even crying hard!) and I did pick her up. Of course she was perfectly fine.

I would want them to call me if LO was crying hard for more than 20 minutes, because that's very out of her nature. Some of the other kids - I dunno, maybe that is more within their range of normal? Maybe they did call the parents and no one came?

@winniebee: Ugh, its so annoying. They were like "he has a 99 point something temperature." I was like that's not a fever! And when I got there he had his fleece on and it was 74 degrees outside! He was probably just hot!

they try their best to console, but if it was going on for too long they would call, esp since its out of the ordinary. they wouldn't tell me i have to pick them up, but would just call as a courtesy so i can make a judgement on whether to pick them up

@gingerbebe: My son's school also called once saying he wasn't himself, was very weepy all day. He didn't have a fever, but they made it seem like I should pick him up. So I did. And he was totally fine. And I was annoyed, lol.

@JoyfulKiwi: Yeah, my daycare is similar. If they can, they will hold, snuggle, rock a crying child, but obviously they can't do that ALL the time, and I wouldn't expect them to.

They would try cuddling/ consoling/ engaging the child. If the crying doesn't stop, call the parents to pick up. But as @Adira: mentioned unless the child has a fever, they don't *have* to go home.

My daycare usually assumes the kid is sick if they can't be cajoled, hugged, whatever after a reasonable period of time. Also, you don't know that the kid had been sobbing that hard for 2+ hours - they could have been pitching a fit off and on and just been in a generally cranky mood.

I got called to pick up my kid one day who was NOT sick and still had to keep him home for 24 hours the next day because he was fussier than usual all day and really unhappy and the daycare people were like "we think he's sick." Sorta the flip side story, but yeah, my folks call.

I'd need more information if we're taking about someone else's child. Our center has a more "case by case" approach, so it would depend on the kid's age/personality, the parents, why they were crying, etc. In general, the teachers check for a fever, try to figure out the problem & find a solution, but if a child is just inconsolable they'd likely make him comfortable and let him cry, checking on him often (I'm thinking an older child here). They may courtesy call parents depending on the teacher.
If it were my kid, hes 3 and I know his temperament, so I'd be concerned that he'd been crying for hours because that's not like him. I wouldn't have expected them to call, because I can't really leave work for a sad kiddo.

I would have been so upset!

They usually would hold a crying child, even if they're still crying!

We've def walked into DD crying before, but def not for that long and usually it's because they legitimately had their hands full.

There is a child sobbing uncontrollably. When the parent arrives, they find their child crying hard with snot dripping down their face. The teacher says, "(S)he has been like this since naptime." If a child at your center had been inconsolable since naptime, and it has been over 2 hours, what would your childcare provider do? Would they try to console the child? What if that wouldn't work? Would they let them keep crying? Would they consider calling home?

On another note - what would you want your childcare provider to do if this happened to your child?
