@Cherrybee: FWIW, i LOVE those tea towels and regularly use them to wipe up baby spit. We have 10 so far (and use them as kitchen towels too) but I want to go out and get 10 more. ;)

@Cherrybee: OMG your DH with the muslin cloths and Ikea, too funny!! My DH would likely have that same rational but I don't think he'd go that extra step!

@Cherrybee: :silly: too funny!

Well, I am officially accepting used items from friends. Even on gear we hadn't thought about purchasing (pack n play) I'm picking up a high chair, pack n play, and stroller today. So, I'll embrace free for now.

Ugh. I had a mare first time around, with my DH. He is Mr Practical and detests the baby industry, as it were, who he believes sells us the idea that unless we buy x,y,z, we are bad parents...... which I'm sure is true but, oh, I wanted those things! The worst was muslin cloths. DH was adamant that they were just regular cotton cloths and yet the baby industry had convinced people that they were a special, must have item and thus charged over the odds for them. This may be true of a&a cloths, but I only wanted the 2 for £3 supermarket ones! Still, he did his research and discovered that 37p Ikea tea towels were the same blend and weight of fabric and bought 10. Y'know, the red and white tea towels??? He then refused to let me buy muslins!! I had to take tea towels out in my change bag to mop vomit.

This time I'm just saying fk it and buying what I want!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I just re-read my response and I realized my phone auto-correct "like" to "kick" lol. I meant to say pick some things that are important, LIKE the baby carrier. And I say if you really want the splurge bassinet, go for it. I'm gonna splurge on a bassinet too. Last time I didn't, and it was one of the very few pieces of gear that would have been worth it.

First DS didn't want to sleep on his own, so he was in the bed with us, in one of those things that goes between parents. DH hated that, so then we were just bed sharing, which meant I couldn't roll over at all. Then we switched to the PnP next to the bed, and I had to get up over and over to BF. For more than 6 months. This time I've already decided on a bassinet that will keep baby close and safe and it'll be worth the $200.

TY for all the replies.

@Foodnerd81: That's a really good point to think about what gear will be photographed a lot!

@ShootingStar: The bassinet I want is expensive Babyhome, but it does have the features I want as compared to the aesthetically pleasing Chicco and compared to the Rock n Play it looks more like a traditional bassinet. So with this gear item I have a Splurge- Spend- Save option, but truly I adore the Splurge.

@Mamasig: @jlm22: HB has convinced me of that, so I wasn't even planning on loading up on baby gear before the baby arrived. Bassinet and Car Seat seem to be the only two absolutely definite gear items we will need within the first month. Am I missing a must-have gear item?

@agold: Thanks! That's totally how I felt about the HypnoBirth and wanted to give the person a piece of my mind. Instead, I read the links he gave me and decided why not try it. He has been put on notice if I truly need an epidural I will ask for one!

@sapphire: I've reigned in my gear choices in on my own if the item has to be purchased new. For instance, I swapped out the Boon collapsible tub in my favorite color green to the teal Summer Infant 1-2-3 tub.

@PawPrints: I may have to get back on FB just for the B/S/T groups!

I was also picky about what gear I wanted, and what I wanted it to look like, but my solution was to spend a lot of time stalking b/s/t groups and Buy Nothing to get exactly what I wanted. I registered for stuff I couldn't find used, and that's what people got me for my shower. A baby carrier is something you really want to love and I definitely understand wanting a Lillebaby airflow, they're amazing, but you can definitely get the exact one you want for a better price by shopping babywearing b/s/t groups on FB.

You don't actually know for sure what gear you will use because a lot of it depends on the baby, so if someone is willing to let you borrow something first I think that's nice. The only reason we didn't buy used was because we didn't have a good experience buying used for lo1 and because I'm paranoid about things like bedbugs. But I definitely agree on function over the look of things. Realistically after two babies I don't think much of anything baby gear is attractive regardless of the color or brand!

About the birth.. I hope he supports what you want. I had epidurals both times, the first after two days of labor and the second one failed on one side depending how I was positioned.. I can't imagine going through a full labor and delivery without it just based on my husbands wishes.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I feel your pain on this one. I'm not a parent yet, but I really hate (in a silly, stomp my foot kind of way) when my husband learns about things that I've otherwise been completely happy to keep him in the dark about it. I.e., the price of tory burch shoes. He just sees flip flops and I'm like, Yep, just flip flops. Then one of his buddies called me out on the price and now husband is like, hey you have enough. I know that my husband will have no idea the range of prices of strollers and cribs and such and I"m hoping I can keep him in the dark about it when/if the time comes that I get to purchase those things. I really hope you can get the things you want!! :silly:

Hmm I'm with your DH...function and not overspending on baby gear is more important than the color or the name brand...esp because sometimes you find you don't even like the item you have. If it doesn't cost anything then you'll feel less bad about getting something different later.
About birthing techniques...you're the only one actually delivering that baby, so I hope you go with a method that works for you!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: oh one other thing to think about- what are you likely to have tons of pictures of? I have so many pics of my LO laying on her activity mat, so I'm glad I got the one I wanted! Same with the rock and play (though that actually was borrowed). It's sort of shallow but for real, I have hundreds of pics of her in those two things!

Honestly, I agree with your friend and DH. So many baby things get used so little that if you can save money and get them used, it is so worth it! And a lot of times they are so gently used that they are almost like new anyway (but so much cheaper). So pick a couple things you're really particular about (like the carrier) and get exactly what you want. But otherwise, I'd recommend taking advantage of savings when you can.

Maybe you can compromise. Pick a few things that are really important to you (kick the carrier) and then say the rest can be second hand. For example, we had multiple baby seats because I needed safe places to put him down. We got a second one in a consignment store because looks didn't matter. But something like a carrier or a bassinet I'd want specific features in, not just anything would do.

My husband learned a long time ago how I feel about other people's parenting opinions and suggestions. Aside from my sister and a couple of close friends, I don't want anyone's advice and once he became more confident in being a parent he started to feel the same way.

I was pretty stubborn that I wanted (mostly) all new baby stuff. I actually cried over the fact that we had some hand me downs from my siblings because I wanted my first baby to have everything new. Pregnancy hormones, definitely! I agree with @Foodnerd81 that take some hand me downs (bouncy chairs, jumperroos, etc) but get the carrier you want! I have the Lille baby and LOVE it. I also totally agree with @Mamasig. Before you have the baby this stuff is so important... After you have the baby you won't care as much. At least that is how it was for me!
PS - You only have one first labor and delivery, so get what you want, even if you realize after the fact you didn't need it. Live and learn :)

I tend to agree with your DH and his friend. Right now you think these things are important, but in hindsight you'll realize they aren't. You won't use some things or only use it briefly. If you end up using something that is ugly a lot, then maybe buy a cuter version of it. I wouldn't intentionally buy something I thought was ugly. But go for the borrowed stuff even if it's not your first choice aesthetically. Before you have kids, you think so much is important. After kids, you realize it's really not.

I have to agree with your SO on this one! Yes, you should get one or two things just because you love them, but for the most part my opinion is if you can get it used or borrow it, you should! It's amazing how briefly baby gear is used, and how some things never end up getting used at all.

I was just pretty stubborn about what gear we needed and only gave him options to choose between when both were acceptable to me! But he knows I'm not one to just spend tons of money without thinking about it anyway.

And btw a good carrier you will use for ages, especially with more than one kid. I'd say something like a bouncy seat that you use for three months, take the hand me down, but get the carrier you want!

DH didn't have any real opinions on childbirth, other than that he wanted it in a hospital. He supported me doing midwives and no drugs but would have been totally cool with an OB and all the drugs. I'm the one who has to deal with the pain.

Is there anything your SO learned along the way from friends that you wish s/he could un-hear/ un-know? How has it affected your pregnancy or baby preparation?

My list of items to get for the baby may be in jeopardy all thanks to a friend of Mr. Lime's that he respects regarding financial matters. The friend told him that baby gear is basically a racket and we should buy consignment. I've told DH the entire time that I wanted to shop used and new and he's been the one saying everything must be new. Anyway, the big difference though is the friend says aesthetics doesn't matter just function. DH is buying into this crap. Aesthetics matter to me! Now my list is in jeopardy. One of his friends offered us a blue and tan SCC, I don't remember the manufacturer. He said we should take it. Umm no, I want a Lille Air in black.

Don't get me wrong he learned about babymoons and push presents from friends too, so it's not all bad. He's sold on the 'moon, still working on the push! We're trying HypnoBirth (natural, med-free technique) because he was talking to someone else. Eventhough, I'm a pain wuss, I'll wholeheartedly try it because it's important to him. Not getting the gear I want and plan to use three times over is just unacceptable.
