I just got The Girl on the Train yesterday at the library. I got into it immediately! I guess there were 1400 people on the wait list, but someone had donated this copy and they set it out for local people first. Lucky me!

I actually started Wild last week...good so far, but it's on hold while I read above.

@Mrs. Tiger: I have that one to read next, my DH already read it.

I'm about halfway through Margaret Atwood's earliest novel, The Edible Woman, which I picked up at a used bookstore because I loved so many of her other books. I just can't get into this one though, and I'm torn between finishing it (b/c I hate not finishing a book I've started) and just giving up on it and moving on to a book I actually enjoy.

@renee: omg just read the secret history and couldn't put it down!

Books I recently read that I liked (other than the ones above):
The Magician's Lie
Three Wishes
The Bees (kind of weird but a definite page turner)
Still Alice (heartbreaking)
The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic (but the ending left me wanting way more!)
The Book of Unknown Americans

@Mrs. Tiger: Thanks! That does sound a bit easier to follow since there are humans in it! haha The Algebraist was about alien life and you had to get really creative with their appearance! They also lived on Jupiter, which is a gaseous planet, and so trying to envision their living environment was difficult for me at times. Something I could probably re-read and get a lot more out of the second time around.

@.twist.: I used to, no time any more!

It's very easy to follow. If you want to glaze over at the calculations you can and you won't miss the story. It's written mostly journal entry, first person narrative style.

For those who are curious, here's the description from Amazon:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

@Mrs. Tiger: I've heard some really good things about that book! Do you read a lot of sci-fi? Was it easy to follow?

I read The Algebraist by Iain M. Banks and, although I did enjoy it, I had a hard time imagining the environment and physical characteristics.

@travellingbee: It's fairly light but with the perfect amount of history mixed in. It is a tome though, I'm already more than 600 pages into it and am just coming out of the Reconstruction era! He's also written the same type of story for several other cities/regions of the world - London, Paris, Sarum (modern day Salisbury, England), and a few others I can't recall off the top of my head. Highly recommend! I will be buying London next.

I'm currently reading New York by Edward Rutherfurd. It's a super interesting historical fiction that follows the story of a couple of families from the beginning of the earliest settlement in NY up through the present day. It's so, so good!!

@Mrs. Pen: Those are in my queue to read too!

I'm a binge reader, and a lot of them have been YA. Some are hit and miss, but the hits for me were:

-Cinder & Ella: Super easy read, but funny and swoon worthy.

-Breathe, Annie, Breathe: It's part of a series, but can be read alone. If read in order than you'll get a bit more background info on some of the other characters, but doesn't make you question left and right what you're missing.

-Collide & Pulse: 2nd book gets a bit much with their love profession.

-Ruin series
-Stage Dive series
-If I break

@Mrs. Pen: Ooh , I read A Thousand Splendid Suns a while ago, and could not put it down! Haven't read Kite Runner yet though.

The other night I finished Pieces of my Sister's Life. It was pretty good, and had me up late most nights because I didn't want to put it down.

Last night I tried to start Death of an Ordinary Man, and I thought it was just terrible. I will not be picking it up again. I don't know how far I got into it, (not far) but I was just like, "I can't!" The way it was written, just ugh. So confusing and hard to read.

We have a bunch of "real" books that we are trying to get through, so we can get rid of them and de-clutter. I know DH will be happy when I go back to using my kindle paper white so I'm not keeping the light on all night!
