I ended up going into labor on my own a day before my scheduled induction (due to low fluid levels). I had baby at 40w3d (which would have my been my induction day).

I was included 4 days before my due date due to spikes in my blood pressure, it was a choice the doctor and I made together. And I'm glad I did because I ended up having an almost 9 pound baby, who got stuck, I can't imagine having waited another week or two how big she would have been. I think you follow the guidance of your doctor and use your intuition.

I would be fine with a 39 week induction if I were you. But I have a nicu nurse brain so I think anything 35+ weeks is pretty dang good.

@tororojo: I definitely wonder how big she would have been and when I would ever naturally have gone into labor. My body didn't take over at all when I was induced and I stopped dilating at 7cm so I had to get a cesarean after 20hrs(now thankful for), when they stopped the pitocin to get things ready for surgery, my contractions completely stopped D: so it definitely makes me wonder about what could have happened!

@T.H.O.U.: interesting! I am confident on dates for this current pregnancy but had no idea with DD- too bad, it would be nice to know how long she actually was on the inside! I haven't had any 3rd tri ultrasounds, just a doctor who measures and guesses.

@runnerd: so it wasn't a GBS infection, just something they couldn't trace? That's scary! As long as I get to the hospital 5ish hrs before delivery I should have time to get settled and have 2 rounds of antibiotics. But it's so hard to predict how things will go!

@fairy: impressive! I had a 9lb 5oz kiddo but with a 40th percentile head...which makes the experience sound more impressive than it was, I think! Do you wonder how big she would have gotten if you had waited and gone naturally? I do! (But I'm okay not having had a 10 lb baby!)

@tororojo: just want to throw in the hat that I was not GBS positive nor did I have GD, but somehow my baby ended up in NICU due to infection for 6 days that was never explainable. If I had any fears of infection, I'd want to induce early after that experience.

We induced both times for size and both times the ultrasound measurements around 35 weeks were probably pretty accurate. Both kids born over 9lbs at 39 weeks. Both times I also wasnt 100% sure of my dates and even early ultrasounds had shown the baby about six days ahead but my due date had never changed.

@Ms.Mermaid: how large do they think the baby will be? (I guess you can't answer that til Wed?) It seems like 4 days wouldn't make a huge difference in growth- sorry you're bummed about the date! Hopefully a good solution is reached that you're comfortable with.

@fairy: how large did they think the baby would be and how large was he/she? DD was way bigger than my doctor expected and I have heard predictions can be way off, but I'm sure some are right on!

I was induced "early" at 39wks for a large baby, and I would do it again. (unless I knew I was getting another cesarean anyway) But that's a pretty personal decision I would follow my gut! :)

I'm scheduled for an induction four days before my due date because of my gestational diabetes. I'm working hard to be comfortable with the idea - the baby is measuring in the 70% percentile, so I'd be totally fine inducing on or the day before my due date, but my doctor picked a different day because it's the day the only midwife I've met is on call. It's frustrating for my already messed up leave situation and other reasons, and I would really rather not be induced at all and I feel like inducing 4 days early cheats me out of using those days to go into labor naturally. I have a measuring ultrasound on Wednesday and depending on the baby's size, I might be more okay with the induction - I've concluded that if I have to induce to avoid a c-section with a larger baby if I go past my due date, I'm okay with it, it's just I would so much rather labor at home than wander around the hospital for 24+ hours.

I'm one that didn't get a full dose of antibiotics. My labor was too fast. It's no big deal, just some extra observation. In our case that meant the hospital was a stickler for keeping us a full 48 hours and the pediatrician wanted us to take LO's temp every day. Not a big deal at all.

I think you have to go with your gut on the induction.

I would personally not for those reasons. I was induced last time at 38 weeks because my ob and the MFM specialist were convinced my son was at least 10 lb- they told me that they wouldn't even let me try to deliver vaginally if I waited to 39 weeks. Actual birth weight? 7 lb 15 oz. Needless to say, I have a different ob this go-round who won't induce for size.

@tororojo: I'd say go with your gut, but I'm probably going to be the only person who induced for non-medically necessary reasons. (Think military, no DH if I waited until due date.) I was induced at 39 weeks and 4 days, and in no way did my induction influence my outcome. (I would have required a c-section even post-dates. I had a small baby who couldn't get past my pelvic inlet.) Buuuut, not everyone can say the same. Interventions are interventions. I was comfortable with the possibility of c-section, even though we gave it the good old college try from Tuesday until Thursday. I was not comfortable doing the whole thing without my husband.

Yeah...I'm thinking I should hold out til my due date at least, thanks for the input! Not to mention that a week early would put her here a few days before Halloween, which seems silly to do on purpose since I won't be able to interact as much w/DD. I just have this fear of sitting in traffic and not making it to the hospital in time or dragging DD w/us into L&D b/c we didn't have time to drop her off...induction is so good for scheduling but admittedly not ideal. Either way, unless my doc thinks it's truly necessary to induce early I will plan to hold out and hopefully let nature do the job!

None of those would be good reasons for me to induce early personally. But that's between you and your doctor. Pre-e or some other medically indicated risk to me or baby would be my reasons for induction, not things that happened last pregnancy like a big baby or meconium...

I was induced 5 days early due to rising blood pressure (no protein or ecclampsia, but dr felt that after 39 weeks, higher blood pressure was doing more harm than good). I was also GBS positive, but no one thought that was a reason to induce on its own. It took no time at all to get the antibiotics, and unless you are prone to insanely fast labors, they should be able to administer it whenever you arrive. If I were you, I would hold out for your due date, then if there is a real concern that this baby is larger (not based on past history - each baby is different), I might allow them to induce. But not before unless there was a true threat to you or the baby - otherwise it just seems unnecessary to me.

For me, clear risk or danger to mother or baby is reason to induce early. I had rising blood pressure during my last few weeks and I fought the drs not to induce until my due date. Baby showed no stress and my intuition told me I was fine. I think if I was in your shoes I'd wait to be induced until my due date but only you and your dr can really gauge if there's a risk to waiting. Size of baby wouldn't be a reason for me to induce early though.
