The tomato shaped ones are bitter and leave that coated feeling in your mouth. I wouldn't describe them at all as being like an apple (that would be more like an Asian pear)...I'd describe them as more like a raw potato. The pointy ones are juicier and I have less experience with them...but they're both ripe, just different textures! The tomato-shaped ones never get soft, they just lose their greenness...we used to have a tree at home!

@VanillaBean: Oh, I see. Thanks! I guess the one I bought wasn't soft and mushy enough. I learned my lesson, though. I'm going to stick to the ones I know that can be eaten firm. Maybe if someone can pick one out for me, I'll try to other kind.

Like others have said, persimmons are delicious when they're fully ripened. They'll be really soft and mushy and smell sweet.

When they're not ripe they leave this awful film all over your tongue and mouth. I can't even describe how weird it feels...but like @tysonja said, it's unpleasant!

you can find them mostly in asian supermarkets in season :)

they are pretty sweet when ripe! :) again, be careful of the 2 different kinds -- the pointy one definitely has to be completely ripe or your mouth will feel all weird for a while and it's not very pleasant :(.

they are delicious!! they are incredibly sweet when ripe and it's one of my favorite fruits. my in-laws grow their own so we are pretty spoiled with them. otherwise, i mainly see them in asian supermarkets (and possibly costco?) and they cost a pretty penny.

@bluestriped bee- the persimmon on the right can be eaten raw, the secret to eating it is to let it fully ripen. You have to wait until it is very very soft before you can eat it. :) It is not meant to be eaten firm like the one on the left.

I love the small, firm and squat ones. They are the ones you can eat raw. I can't describe the taste, though. I believe it's a fruit and it is sweet. I slice it like an apple and eat it.

There are ones that are soft and have a pointed end. Those you can't eat raw. I made that mistake once. I think they taste very starchy. I couldn't get that taste out of my mouth for a couple minutes. ETA: Oh, I'm wrong. You can eat these kinds raw but it has to be completely ripen and soft. I don't have any experience in eating this kind so I'll have to find a friend who does.
