My LO is 6.5 months and has just started commando crawling and can now move REALLY fast. This morning I'd popped her on the bedroom floor while I ducked into the bathroom and all of a sudden I had a thump. When I poked my head round the door to check on her she'd fallen halfway down our stairs! Thankfully she hadn't fallen any further and she was ok but it's certainly not my proudest moment :-(

@Running Elley: that is what I'm dealing with now! It's
The worst!

DD has bronchiolitis and she has had 2 coughing fits where she'll turn bright red, stop coughing, face frozen mid cough and eyes wide like she is choking. She starts breathing a few seconds (which feel like months) later but it is utterly frightening.

It's a tie for me. The first time was when she just got her shots. She did so well and was playing all day, then later that evening she suddenly started crying, then went limp in my arms. She spiked a fever! I thought she died! I couldn't sleep all night. All I could do was watch her sleep.

The second time was my Mommy of the Year moment. She just started crawling. she was happily exploring the bedroom while I was in bed watching her from above. I downloaded a new game on the iPad and was starting to play it when I noticed she reached the humidifier and somehow dislodged the knob. She was holding the wire and getting electrocuted! She made that sound you hear on TV. I reached out and pulled her off the thing and she started crying right away. There was no marks on her, her hand wasn't even red, so I'm not sure if I just imagined the whole thing or what, but it scared the living crap out of me! I learned my lesson.

Both were falls.
First: We were trick or treating when LO was a little over 1. My husband was carrying him and as he was walking down someone's porch, he slipped and LO flew out of his arms. Luckily, he only have some scratches on the side of his face. Second: we get a call from our babysitter saying they got into an accident. I nearly passed out! The stroller hit a broken sidewalk and flipped over. LO landed on the pavement. He got a huge bump on his head. We went to the ER just in case but was nothing serious, luckily!

When DS was four he slipped and hit his head on the corner of my inlaws coffee table. He had a bump on his head that looked like a little purple grape and it was cut. It looked horrible for days and noticeable for weeks.

When he was almost 2 he had his one and only seizure. He just had no balance and when I held him he slumped over. I took him to an ER but he was totally fine by the time he got there and they found nothing wrong with him.

DH had given R some gripe water and while it was a tiny bit, she somehow started choking on it. We had to pound on her back to get her to cough it up and she started crying again. I didn't know you could choke on liquid.

A little over a month ago I was giving E a bath and I stood up to take off my sweater. When I looked down at him he had rolled into his tummy in the infant tub and was face down. He'd obviously just rolled over since I had only stood up a second before but he wasn't flailing or anything. I was terrified. I pulled him up and he was coughing and spitting up water. He was scared and surprised but okay. I was a complete mess. DH had to finish bedtime while I had a full on emotional breakdown.

The other time was when he had bronchiolitis at 4 months old. The worst day of it something upset him and he started frying which sent him into a coughing fit and he was just coughing/choking and turning bright red, he couldn't stop. I made DH take us to Urgent Care. I was sure that he was going to stop breathing.

@jmarionsmith: Our motion sensor monitor has gone off quite a few times since DS has started moving all over the place. It's terrifying every time!

Scariest moment was with my son when he decided it'd be a good idea to try to climb a tree at my parents house with a bungee cord. He was seven, and he was suppose to be playing on his tree swing while my Mom was working in her garden. I got that phone call and raced to her house, and then to the emergency eye surgeon. He thankfully didn't lose his sight, but his eye sight is worse in that eye and he still has scar tissue behind his retina.

This thread is making me sick to my stomach to hear all these scary stories!! :(

DD is still pretty young, so I haven't had a chance to have too many scares with her yet, but when she was 8 weeks old, I fell down the stairs with her in my arms. I made a loud scream, and poor DH came running faster than I've ever seen him move. DD was screaming (from being scared, she was fine), so I had to yell to him that she was okay so he could breathe. I got bruised pretty bad, but nothing serious. I was shaking the whole rest of the day thinking about how much worse it could have been. SO mad at myself too, because I was rushing since I was running late to get to work. Now I make sure to take my time when going down the stairs...

One was when LO and I fell down the stairs last week. The other was when she inhaled a LOT of spit-up when she was a month old. She stopped breathing for a little bit, and then had a really hard time catching her breath for a while after that. It was scary.

@aprilk: lo getting rotavirus/norovirus is one of my biggest fears!

we use a motion monitor with my DS, mostly because i'm a paranoid freak, but that's another story. anyways, one night he had scrunched himself so tightly in the corner of his crib that the sensor couldn't feel him breathing and starting alarming.

i was so scared that i just froze. thank goodness DH was home and nearly broke his neck, literally, to get to him. as soon as we realized he was ok i just broke down in sobs and rocked him for a good 30 minutes.

i have never been so terrified, ever.

My middle DD was 3 and she swallowed one of those little metal keys you turn in stuffed animals that play music.

I had put her down for nap and she called me back into her room a few minutes later to show me it broke as she was spinning it to turn her music on. I said we will put it right here on her dresser and fix it when she got up. I went into my bedroom to do something (which was odd because I usually go right down stairs or she won't go to sleep.)

I heard a weird noise so I went to check on her and she was choking. She wasn't moving any air, wasn't making any sounds just kind of flailing her arms. I picked her up and started doing back thrusts. It wasn't comming. I ran outside with her while still doing the thrusts and yelled to my neighbor who was in their kitchen with her window open to call 911. SHe couldn't hear what I said so she came out and just as she did I got it dislodged.

Out of all the really intense things I have seen as an ICU nurse this was the scariest moment of my life. The look in her eyes when I first got to her and she couldn't breath is something that will never leave my mind.

With my oldest I had abruption of the placenta and she was in critical condition for several days, with a 3 week NICU stay. The first few days were really scary, but in a different way because there wasn't much I could do to change the situation-if that makes sense.

We were at the mall play area and DS slipped out and got halfway down the mall. Someone figured he must have escaped from there (he wasn't wearing shoes) so she brought him back as I was becoming frantic looking for him. Yeah, I was shaking for the rest of the day.

The ironic part is that he's typically a shy/scared of strangers/Mama's boy type so I can't imagine what possessed him to take off on his own!

I have two that are pretty closely tied. The first one was a month or two ago. DS fell head-first off of a bed from about 3 feet up. He was fine, but I was a mess. My DH ended up taking a very long lunch spend time with us. I kept my panic hidden in front of DS, but I wanted to throw myself off a building for letting him get hurt. It was the first time he'd been hurt, so it was definitely big and scary for us.

The second time was last night when he slipped in the tub and bit his tongue. A relatively small thing, all things considered, but the scary part came when I saw blood on his arm and face, before I figured out where it was coming from. My heart stopped.
