My LO was 11 months for his first Christmas. He liked Santa and he opened gifts on his own but only really wanted the wrapping paper. He liked being around his grandparents, aunts, and uncles and I think that was the best part of Christmas for him. He got it much more this past year at almost 2.

We did a quiet/low key Christmas. T was 9 months. She loved the paper. We did and will continue to do want/need/wear/read. It helps me regin in what comes into our house and be reasonable about spending. Even at her first birthday she was pretty obvious. You could ship a couple small gifts ahead of time. Would you parents be willing to ship things back? Her favorite gift was the little people whale and monkey I got for $6 at Target that was in her stocking.

Dd has a December birthday, so for her official 2nd Christmas she had just turned one. She did pretty good opening presents at our house and even at her birthday. But on actual Christmas with her older cousins going a bit crazy opening stuff, she was a bit overwhelmed by it all.

At 13m, DD2 let her older sister (3.5y) open most of her presents :) She would occasionally help and/or occasionally play with stuff that really interested her. I'd suggest not going overboard with presents -- especially with a birthday right around then too, it's easy to get a ton of stuff (even if you don't buy that much, it seems like other people always will!). We ended up hiding some stuff away and bringing it out a couple months later when she was growing out of the baby toys.

As far as travel, I think having a separate seat will help a lot. I think that 9-15ish months is one of the harder times to fly because they likely won't just nurse/nap (too much excitement!) but they are super-active and wiggly. At least by the end of that age-range, you can have more solid food snacks in your arsenal. I'd use their carseat if you can (if they don't mind it), since mine were always more likely to get sleepy in that and bring lots of things to ration out slowly (puffs/cheerios, etc). Stacking the plastic cups on the plane was always a big hit with my girls at that age too!

My son just turned 1 year at his first Christmas, we travelled to my parent's home for it. It involved a full day of travel, more or less, plus 6 hours of time zone difference.

The time zone thing was the worst, I hadn't really anticipated how long it would take him to adjust, so that threw us off. My son was majorly into the presents, he thought they were all for him, so I'd suggest maybe doing the adult gifts separate at a holiday gathering.

At 10 months, DD had No clue what was going on. She was sick, which may have contributed to her lack of excitement but she didn't even care about unwrapping or boxes. It was slightly better at her 1st bday but not much! Just don't have expectations for a big reaction! It's still fun though.

We just had L's 1st birthday party and he pretty much cried at his presents...so don't expect much (except for funny pictures to show him later. :silly: )

My LO was 10 months at Christmas. She didn't care about the gifts, except for the crockpot I got (putting the lid on and off). She didn't even really try to open anything. She did like the singing Christmas card she got.

Around 14 months she started to get interested in opening our dog's bark box that comes in the mail each month.

Our guy was 15 months at his first Christmas and had no clue what was going on, even though he loved all the wrapping paper and boxes! We did a long distance road trip at 11 months with him and it went pretty well. I made sure to create a "play" bag ahead of time with different toys, snacks, activities to keep him occupied (something new for every 15 min of awake time, including snacks as an option). I think it really helped! Hopefully G will nap some on the plane!

We have traveled every Christmas (which is also my LO's birthday time!) since LO was born 2.5 hours to visit DH's family. Every kid is different, but my LO can have cared less about Christmas or his birthday the past 2 years. Only recently at 2.5 years old has he gotten the concept of birthday parties.

That being said, my kid enjoyed messing with the bows and wrapping paper and eating the icing off his cupcake at his "birthday party" we threw for him. It's fun, but not something I would spend a ton of money or energy on for him so young.

Just wondering since we booked our tickets today. My son will be 11 months old and we got him his own seat since it's 8hrs of travel time & he's very big / heavy already.

Will he have any concept of Christmas whatsoever? Opening presents, those are gifts for him, etc?

We are thinking of having a "birthday" party for him then too because my parents won't be able to be there for his "real" birthday.

I don't know, I'm just wondering what it will be like.
