I do a lot of the things listed commonly as crunchy, but didn't consider myself crunchy. Mainly because I love my car, work in oil and gas, run my dishwasher nightly and have only purchased one item of used clothing in the last 5 years. And I shave my armpits, semi-regularly, but that has more to do with time and organization, less any sort of theory or drumbeat. Haha.

I have always associated crunchy with something less desirable. I was just wondering if that was just me.

Ps love the MOHs scale of crunchiness.

Ugh I am so NOT a hippy! I like lipstick and wearing all black or polka dots. But I definitely practice some parenting that could be deemed crunchy. I don't think all women who Cosleep or cloth diaper or breastfeed for lengthily periods of time are any more like hippies than a person who sleep trains or puts their child in their crib and formula feeds is a yuppie. I get where the reference comes from but it still irks me. I feel like most of us are a hybrid of lifestyles that work for us. I prefer the term attachment parenting verses traditional or modern parenting because they seem to imply less of an overall lifestyle and aesthetic. I know some people feel attachment seems to imply other types are unattached though so maybe we need to come up with some new terms that are less annoying.

Now that I have a bay I find I so funny that baby wearing and co-sleeping are considered crunchy. I am one of the least crunchy people you'll ever meet, but I do both those things. Why? Because they're convenient! Lol. D wouldn't sleep at all at first if he was more than a few inches from me. He sleeps at least of every night next to me. Evacuee I get tired of getting up to get him from the PnP every two hours. And baby wearing calms him down a lot if them time and makes it easier for me to do things like grocery shopping and getting ready in the morning.

@heartonastring: hahaha that was hilarious! I love it.

I think there are many things that could contribute to someone being crunchy- but I don't think of hippie or weird. Maybe because I come from a generally pretty crunchy family??

I am pretty down the middle though. I know and identify with both sides but pick and choose what works for me. I think general green living is more crunchy-

Gardening
Composting
Natural birthing
Baby wearing
Cosleeping
Organic/local eating and lots of homemade foods
Only using glass food containers, and cloth instead of paper towels
Limited tv time or technology
Alternative healthcare
Cloth diapering

@heartonastring: I love that. I saw it the first time and it still cracks me up.

But yeah, 'crunchy' to me is pretty earthy, hippie, natural... in terms of parenting, I would say it implies extended breastfeeding, cosleeping, BLW, cloth diapering, not taking drugs/ pain relievers but being into alternative medicine, and natural child birth.

I think I am crunchy in some ways but not others. :)

@heartonastring: hahaha I loved that!

For me, crunchy is living on a commune, don't shave your body hair type thing. & while I actively admit that I genuinely envy that type of lifestyle, I like a lot of non-crunchy things too. I do classify myself as a "hippie" though & have decided that being a hippie means that you stand for something & March to the beat of your own drum without fitting into any specific stereotype. (I'm kind of all over the place when it comes to stereotypes!)

I posted this awhile ago. It's obviously meant at least partly in jest, but it has a pretty good summary of crunchy parenting practices :)

What does crunchy mean? What's everyone's definition?

I'm curious.
