I'll be a downer - maternity pads. A crate of them! Pack what you think you will need and then throw in another pack. And have a good supply at home! Good luck!

@obxwife: If you don't have the baby book yet you can ask them to do it on some card stock or a piece of paper and glue it in the book after you get it.

@artbee: Oh shoot! I don't have a baby book yet! I need to look for one ASAP. I do have a couple of outfits set aside to bring with for LO to come home in, depending on how big the little guy is. :)

I packed a lot of things I didn't need. I stayed in my gown the entire time, no sense in getting my clothes all gross and bloody! And I didn't put makeup on, I just didn't care, even for pictures. I had books, but no time to read. If I had any free time it was spent relaxing or napping. But there wasn't much of that.

Do you have a coming home outfit for LO? And I brought her baby book so they could put her footprints in it. We also started filling it out while we were there.

@Mrsbells: and @obxwife: Totally! I'm constantly grateful for the National Health Service here. Not having to worry about co-pays and billing makes having a baby so much less stressful!

@MegWag: considering the cost of a hospital birth in the US, I think I prefer to England hospitals, even though they dont give you as many freebies, atleast you wont have a bill of thousands and dollars/pounds afterwards. I'd much rather bring my own ice and know the NHS is paying for everying.

@Rosie Girl: 5 Days?! So exciting! I'm thinking of leaving the towels at home now, just using theirs and my sister said the same about underwear.

@MegWag: Wow, ICE? That's crazy! But like you said, if insurance is covering you 100% - you're lucky. My old insurance did but my new insurance is 80-20. I had to pay $500 towards my bill.

I can't help but feel slightly jealous when I read all of the stuff that the hospital provides in the US... They hardly provide anything here in the UK. No diapers for the baby, no pads for mom, nothing. We've even been instructed to bring our own ice! Seriously... there's some new policy that the ice machines weren't hygenic so they aren't allowed to have one. I feel like I'm going to end up packing to move in, when we're leaving just 8 hours after I give birth anyway!
...But then I remember that it all comes out of insurance and I'd rather have the baby for free than some freebies from the hospital :)

Since this is my second, I have an idea of what I actually need and will use, which is nice! Our bag includes:

Comfy pants
Nursing tank
Nursing bra
Boy short underwear (although I will prob just end up using the hospitals so not to ruin mine!)
Zip up sweater
Socks
Slippers
Travel size bathroom essentials (I haven't even bought pads because the hospital gives them to you, and I am hoping to get enough to last me until I need the smaller ones. )

For DH I packed him sweats, sweatshirt, underwear, shirts, socks.

For baby I only packed a hat and the outfit to bring her home in. They supply all the diapers and wipes and outfit while in the hospital.

I will just use the hospitals towels because you bleed so much, I don't want to ruin any of mine.

I only have 5 days less, so I am all ready!

I way overpacked my hospital bag. I don't think I used half the things i packed. Besides my toiletries and undergarments, I would say that the one item I used on a daily basis is my robe. My friend bought me a robe from victoria's secret (super soft and comfy) and used it 24/7 during my hospital stay. It's the first thing on my hospital bag list for baby #2. :)

I'm going to work on my post for this over the weekend! One tip our childbirth instructor gave us was to pack colored or printed linens and towels because all of the hospital stuff is white and you don't want them thinking it's theirs and taking it with the other laundry.

@obxwife: yay!! I just wanted to say ENJOY... even though it's of course painful and crazy, I thoroughly enjoyed the process and it's the last time you and your partner will go through something together ALONE! Aside from all the pain and discomfort, it was an amazing bonding time and we still look back on it fondly. Whenever we have our next baby, it will be just as exciting, but nothing's like that first time!!!

Ah yes! @yoursilverlining: UNDIES!! haha, they are packed as well. And so is the camera with a charged battery. I also have some breast pads too I didn't add on my list above.

Husband will also pack a small bag with some overnight clothes for him (if he stays overnight) and some snacks and drinks for himself as well.

Sounds like the hospital should have everything we need but I guess I'm just excited and prepared to go!!!

It really depends on what kind of person you are, but I ended up using very little in my VERY prepared hospital bag. The things I did end up using (or sending Rob Sr. home for) were:

Laptop and charger
Cell phone and charger
Camera and charger
Change of clothes (maternity clothes only!) to go home in
Nice nightgown and robe for days 2 and 3
Makeup and brushes, other toiletries (contact stuff!)
Extra hair elastics
Boppy pillow
Baby's going home outfit (I brought both newborn size and 0-3 month size)
Snacks for Rob Sr.
Hospital pre-registration forms
Nursing bra
Change of clothes and toiletries for Rob Sr.

Things I didn't use:
Focal point picture
Back massager
change for vending machines / payphones
slippers (I just wore the slipper socks they gave me)
sleep nursing bra (I didn't like it, I need more support)
headband
sugar-free candy (I just drank fluids)

I brought my own pillow and used it but I could have gone without-- it was big and annoying to carry around.

How long are you expected to be in the hospital, a week? LOL, just kidding. I totally packed as you did but to be honest, I was in so much pain after delivery that I was in no position to change into my normal clothes (until we left the hospital), I had no energy to put on makeup, and the hospital staff insisted I use their towels because they didn't want me to ruin MY towels from all the blood!

Like I said, I pretty much packed as you did but in reality, all I needed/wanted was my toothbrush, a hair elastic, a giant cotton t-shirt, and socks/slippers.

A few friends and I were talking on twitter the other day about what to pack to bring to the hospital when we go into labor. As of right now, I'm packing like I would for a weekend getaway.

So far, I have:
-2 nursing bras
-2 nursing tank tops
-1 zip front hooded sweatshirt
-2 pairs of comfy sweatpants
-slippers
-bathroom essentials, all travel size
-brushes/makeup (have to look pretty for all the pictures!)
-extra large pads
-cell phone charger
-chapstick
-laptop/charger
-towel/washcloth
-flipflops
and my favorite blanket

Not to mention, we have the diaper bag all ready to go too even though we're sure we'll get plenty of goodies at the hospital. Some women say to pack nothing and some pack like they're going away for a week!

What did/do you plan to pack?? What am I forgetting!
