I actually read somewhere (some Emily Post type thing ) that in this situation, it is correct to go in first so the lady doesn't have to slide to get in and then slide to get out. You go in first, and then you're supposed to get out first and then go around to her side and help her out. It always confuses DH though--he always stands to the side and motions me to go in first!

I think holding the door open and letting her enter the cab first is more chivalrous. I admit that sometimes it's a pain to have to slide over, but DH's legs are much longer than mine so it makes more sense for me to do the sliding! We rarely take cabs, but DH still opens my car door and I love it :)

@mrbee: Oh, haha! I've never gotten a cab in NYC, so I wouldn't know. :P But I think you're doing pretty good if you're actually taking the time to observe what she's wearing and THEN make a decision on which to do! My husband definitely wouldn't be doing that!

@Adira: You can't really run around to the other side of a cab in New York City... you'd be running into traffic, and most cabs don't like it when you open the traffic-side door.

I just asked Mrs. Bee which option she'd prefer, and she said she doesn't care ha! :) In reality, I usually slide across if I see she's wearing a nice dress or skirt. If she's in jeans or something comfortable, I'll hold the door open for her.

This has never crossed my mind. Usually, I get in first and then DH walks around the car to the other side.

@mrbee: Maybe next time you should just hold the door open for her and see what she says! Definitely the thought of someone holding the door open for me is more appealing, although I could see not wanting to have to slide over. OR could you hold the door open for her and then run around to the other side and get in over there?

@Adira: If I had to guess, I would say that she'd prefer the more traditional option, where I hold open the door for her. But in actuality, this probably isn't really something that she would care about either way!

I think I'd prefer the second, although I like the idea of someone holding the door open for me, so I'm not sure!

What does @Mrs. Bee prefer??

I'm in Florida so we're not often in cabs. But when we are I think I get in first. DH is just so used to holding the door open for me. I don't mind sliding.

I always get in first. Hubs is 6'6"... He doesn't slide well : ) Also, if I get in first that usually means he will get out first so he can give me a hand.

I always have DH go in first. NY cabs can be so tight back there. I wish we had British cabs so that would be a non-issue.

depends on what I'm wearing - if I'm wearing a skirt or dress I don't want to be sliding ANYWHERE, much less across the backseat of a cab *shudder*

If I flag a cab with Bee, is it better to:

1) Let her enter the cab first, which forces her to slide across the back seat.
2) Enter the cab first myself, so that she doesn't have to slide across the rear seat.

I usually do the latter... but I'm not sure which is better.

Which would you prefer?
