@bluestriped bee: we have soooo many sleepsacks because charlie has been wearing them since he was 4 months old. i've tried a lot of different brands. we have at least 4 on hand in different thicknesses (in the winter), and because he tends to throw up a lot.

right now a halo fleece sleepsack, a grobag, and merino kids sleepsack are in our rotation.

I like to have 2 on hand in the current size, just in case one is in the wash. It's also convenient when you have to travel, you can pack one and use one at home.

I try not to buy these too far in advance though, because the sizing and the heaviness of the fabric.

yes-- RJ has never really tried to climb out of his crib and it's probably because he can't get his leg up high enough!

We have a friend with a baby the same age as Charlie... she can climb out of the crib, no problem. We were confused as to why Charlie hasn't done the same, and then Bee realized that Charlie's sleep sack limits his mobility!

That gave me a lot of comfort, as I've been really worried about him climbing out of the crib lately!

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like they are very handy to have. How many sleep sacks do you need on hand? I'm assuming that they can get messy if LO has an accident. So you probably need at least 2.

If you get the size right, the arm holes shouldn't be so large so that a baby could get its arms out of it. I mean, of course anything is possible, but I don't think it's likely at all especially in the early months when babies aren't too mobile in their sleep.

I think sleep sacks are primarily popular because of safety issues. You'd rather a baby wear a blanket than to have a loose blanket in the crib that could find its way over the baby's face, etc...

@Andrea: Yeah, I know... there are the arm holes. But that's the finagling of which I speak- can they not get their arms out of the holes and into the sack? Or am I worrying about things that don't really happen?

@MegWag: they have their arms out. It does not swaddle. Swaddle sleep sacks give you the ability to keep the arms down. So there are two different kinds.

We transitioned to a sleepsack after the swaddle. We used an Aiden and Anais muslin one in the summer when you just need a little something to continue the routine. Now we use a fleece one by Halo, the early walker with the little holes for the feet, making it easier for the kidlet to stand.

Thanks guys. I guess I hadn't realized that it's in addition to PJs. I thought it was in place of... So it's like a wearable blanket....
I know they're zipped in, but can't they still finagle their arms so that they could move around inside it, or is it more fitted than that?

it's like a dress that zips down the front, but the bottom is sewed up. So it's impossible to wriggle out of. It doesn't replace pajamas-- you wear it over them. If I tried to put a regular blanket on RJ, he'd be uncovered the first second I laid him down in the crib.

It's just one of those things that doesn't really make sense until you have the baby... and then it's a necessity.

There is no way for them to wiggle out since they are zipped up. The zipper goes from top to bottom so they would need to reach down to their feet to unzip. I think my LO would be cold in just PJs since we keep the temp at 71 so sleep sack plus PJs is perfect. We use Halo brand.

We have the deedee sleepsack that @chopsuey119 mentioned. We LOVE it. In addition to keeping them warm, the heavier weight ones also act as kind of a mini swaddle, keeping them from flailing around a little bit and waking themselves up so easily. We didn't start using one right away, but noticed a huge improvement in sleep as soon as we tried it.

I'm in Florida so it just depends on the weather for us. If it's really cold we'll put her in a sleep sack, keeps her nice and warm. She can't get out of it, it's zipped up on her.

I responded to this on my iphone but the page isn't loading for some reason.
So I'll post again. Basically, at 4 months or so LOs start moving around so it's impossible to keep a blanket on them. I used to put my LO in a thick, footed, long sleeve onesie when she went to bed. In the middle of the night I noticed her skin was cool to the touch--even when our thermostat is set at 70-72.
The baby deedee sleep sack we have is AMAZING. I just put her in thin, long sleeved sleep clothes and she stays nice and toasty throughout the night. It also moves with her and isn't restrictive so she sleeps well and can roll around as she pleases.
It's a must buy in my opinion. One of my favorite baby items.

So I keep reading about sleep sacks and I just don't get why they are better than sleep suits or pjs or whatever... can someone help me understand?
Also, my husband wants to know if the babies really stay wearing them the way they should. He thinks they'd wriggle out of them and it's be the same as having a blanket.
