The Ikea figure 8 set was the first train set for both my boys:

https://www.amazon.com/Ikea-300-643-59-LILLABO-20-Piece-Multicolor/dp/9178889421

We LOVED it, and it's actually really similar to the train sets my brother and I had as kids.

One word of caution though: if your kid ends up loving Thomas, the Thomas trains won't fit beneath these tunnels.

We started with this one and liked how it came with its own storage container. http://www.target.com/p/kidkraft-train-table-multi-colored/-/A-17001427?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=&adgroup=&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=m&location=9021744&gclid=CLyQ-qKa5M8CFQkPaQodgawAGQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

We started with a wooden set, but somehow ended up with a set of Duplo tracks with motorized trains and it still gets used.

We got the Brio classic figure 8 set and an Orbium toys expansion set that included a bridge. Together this let's him make a decent sized track.

We started with a Brio set and added on with IKEA trains and tracks. I just got whatever set was on sale at the time. It came with wooden trees, rubber street signs, plastic people with luggage and a two-car passenger train (both plastic, one is motorized) and another wooden train (non motorized).

We bought an off brand that is compatible with Brio. It's a huge set with a ton of bridges. Somewhere along the way we also accumulated an IKEA set (also compatible). We bought a Brio battery powered locomotive and it works perfectly on the tracks. I can see that the off brand quality isn't the same, but it works just as well.

We started with the super simple and cheap Ikea set! Once we realized he loved it so much, we got the off brand expansion packs on Amazon.
Then found an amazing Craigslist deal for like $75 for hundreds of pieces. That was 2.5 years ago and ds still plays with the trains daily and I'm happy to report we spent less than $100 total for his huge collection.

We bought the Melissa and Doug set for my nephew and they've been pleased with that one and also added to it with the expansion packs on Amazon.

We got the Brio deluxe railway set. I wasn't planning on spending so much but I found it at a huge discount last year and decided to splurge on it. My LO loves it and it really is very well made.

DD is nearly 2 1/2 and has really gotten into "choo choo's" in the last few months, so our plan is to get her a train set for Christmas. I'm leaning toward the Brio brand because I know it's great quality and would last through multiple kids. My question is, for those of you that have trains, which set would you suggest we start with? There are so many options! We aren't planning on getting her a huge train set off the bat just in case she doesn't end up playing with it a ton, but want to have enough tracks and accessories to pique her interest.
