My neighborhood has a mix of families, older people (bought their houses 20+ years ago) and then when they sell their home, young families move in. 5 houses have "turned over" since we moved in and I have made friends with 2 of them so far.

I think it's easier to make friends on neutral territory, like a playground or a pool. But then again, a lot of people I seem to come across have their group of friends and aren't interested in expanding it. It's a challenge to know which ones are open and which are not.

Joining the pool will definitely help. I've met a lot of neighbors with kids through the pool. As mentioned by PP, NextDoor is also a great website to stay connected with neighbors. Wouldn't hurt to ask if there are any kids who may want a play date at a nearby park.

Do you have the NextDoor app in your area? I've seen people ask this question on mine with luck finding other littles.

@mediagirl: I feel like we are in similar boats. We are on a cul de sac too with very little foot traffic. When we first moved in sept it was easy enough to hang out with the neighbors because people were outside playing in the cul de sac. And our across the street neighbor has two kids a year old than c and we've become friendly, but not quite friendly enough to have in house play dates. We do still see people on our walks but mostly in passing. I also have an abnormally friendly block, I think, which is nice.

we took some classes at our county rec center, and i think if i had actually put some effort in i could have met people that way (i didn't want to because apparently i think having 2 friends is enough, ha!). the pool will be a good place to meet folks--at least it was for us!

@mediagirl: Well, that stinks! Dog owners don't even come up your street? Ours is not a very busy street, but there are so many people out walking their dogs (or just themselves), that we met like half the neighborhood within a couple of months of arriving. Maybe just keep going on your neighborhood strolls and hanging out in your front yard and see if that doesn't start a trend of getting other people outside!

The other thing you might do outside in your front yard is start a garden/raised beds. We spend a lot of time in ours and that gives us lots of stuff to do outside, because it needs to be planted, watered, and weeded. Alternatively, start a bunch of plants in decorative pots and change them around based on the season.

@honeybear: we live on a cul-de-sac and no one walks down our street! (we've tried this) ha! We have even stopped in random cul-de-sacs int he neighborhood to write with sidewalk chalk. One time a lady came out to ask if we were okay...otherwise we have seen nothing....

Play outside in the front yard and say hi to everyone who passes by, especially any older neighbors/retirees who have been there for a while, because they'll often know everyone in the neighborhood, including where potential playmates live. I feel like many people think of the backyard as the appropriate spot for playing, but if you think about it, it's sort of antisocial to be back there. If you've got a porch or a driveway, haul some chairs out there and hang out!

The other spots we've had good luck meeting people are local (not neighborhood) parks, church, and the library.

Well, it's a big under taking but we have a block party every year and it's by far the best way to get to know people that I've found. We are super lucky though and have two kids that will be in my daughter's grade on our block and several close to her age.

@Mamaof2: woohoo! We have a Facebook page, too. I may see if anyone in the group has a child starting K next year. We have a lot of options for schools around here so it's actually a good conversation starter. I may try that. Thanks!

@mediagirl: Our neighborhood has a FB page and someone posted on there asking if there were any other kids entering 1st grade - I saw it and realized they lived right down the road from us and now DS has a friend in the neighborhood!

We moved to a new house in the summer. We have had very bad luck finding any kids our daughter's age within walking distance of our house. Whenever the weather is decent enough, we go for family walks or bike rides around the neighborhood. We essentially are scoping out the neighborhood for little kids. All we have seen so far are kids around 8-12.

What are other ways to find kids in the neighborhood? We don't have a community playground but we do have a pool that we will be joining in the summer!
