My freshman year of college, I lived in a dorm that was in an old converted house. It had very squeaky wood floors. At this time, Dance Dance Revolution was THE hot video game. My room was directly below a room of three guys, who would constantly play the game. Maybe they stopped between 2am and 9 am, but otherwise, they were ALWAYS playing. So annoying!!! I am normally a very calm person, but that just set me on edge. Once we had a couple of guys move in upstairs and sometimes in our living room we'd hear REALLY LOUD CRASHES--sounded like the were jumping off a table onto the floor, and I'm not sure what else could make that sound. I also hate when the apt. next door leaves an alarm on and you can hear it beeping for a loooong time. Everyone who lived there was a student, except for my next-door-neighbor, Peter. He was always sending out building-wide emails about things that bothered him, which included such benign things as cooking (didn't like the smells) and doing laundry. Seriously. We'd get emails like "I noticed a lot of you have been making dinner lately around 6 o'clock, and it is really bothering me. Could you please keep it to a minimum?" What the hell are we supposed to do, then? Starve?? Get takeout each night?? He also didn't like the way people's laundry detergent and fabric softener smelled, so he asked us to not use our building's laundry facility. Umm, where are we supposed to wash our clothes, then? One time, my roommate was coming back up the stairs after switching loads, and Crazy Pete comes bursting out of his apartment (perfectly timed to coincide with her return, no doubt) wearing a WWII-era gas mask, pushes her off to the side of the hallway, and runs out the building. As if that wasn't weird enough, he also never left the house, and sat inside all day playing online chess. He got really into it, and would yell and scream and bang on the walls (frequently knocking down things on shelves in MY apartment). I'm pretty sure he was mentally ill and not taking meds the whole time. Or he just did way too many drugs in the 60s. When I did see him outside of the apartment building, he tended to just wander around, muttering to himself. We can hear everything our upstairs neighbors do, watch, or say (thin floors/ceiling??) but they aren't that bad. I mean, they are loud, and they walk SO heavy you would think they weigh 600 pounds but they are actually average sized, but they don't do too many obnoxious things. The worst was during the republican debates when they would scream at the TV when they disagreed with something one of the candidates said. We still imitate it sometimes-- LIAR!!!! I went over there to change it for him and he told me that the beep was to let him know if was working and refused to let me fix it. Soooooo annoying.
