16 hours from Seoul to DC! :)
It wasn't so bad...we brought lots of toys and snacks and the TV on the plane was a treat!
The best thing was that we were able to get bulkhead seating (I think that's what it's called) -- basically the first row of coach behind business class. It gave us extra leg room and we were even able to sit on the floor and play when Lil' CB got a bit squirmy. He was 15 mo. at the time.
One tip that my friend gave me was to have little gifts or treats prepared -- one to open at the top of each hour. We had things like different little snacks, a toy car, a slinky, stickers, etc. We didn't have exactly one for each other, but about 10 or so.

@HabesBabe: I was pretty crazy going with our 5 week old, but our ped was okay with it and it was for my sister's wedding I couldn't imagine missing. I don't think I'd do it again that young. 8-10 weeks isn't too bad though since that's after their first shots! And they just sleep and eat for the most part at that age. Once they are more mobile, it's tougher.

@mrbee: Ahhh understood... with daycare being closed for a whole month, I'd want to take off to paradise then too!

Sounds like so much fun. We once had to do SLC to LAX to Hawaii with a long layover and it was 12 hours. Not quite the same, but I am always surprised at what good travelers our girls are! I think you should go for it!

How fun and exciting! Could you break up a layover to possibly give yourself a "break" from traveling for a quick vacay-layover? Not sure if it would be better or worse.

I really don't want to spend the holidays here so I would love to take LO on a trip over Christmas sometime. He will be 3 months old then...not sure if that is too young or not!

I have friends in Palawan!
As for the flight, I think you're better off doing the LA thing, the flights from NY direct to Asia are SOOOO long. I think breaking it up makes it easier.
Good luck!

@NYCaliMama: 5 weeks old! That's incredible. Hubs and I want to fly from LA to DC to visit my dad when LO is about 8-10 weeks, and both of my parents are totally against it. I may need to pick your brain to convince them otherwise!

@NYCaliMama: Yah I usually go off peak too! But Charlie's daycare is closed in August, so it works out cost wise.

If we took a week off in December, we'd still have to pay for daycare alas... that would offset a lot of the airline savings!

oh I was going to say also, maybe also consider going to the Philippines in the winter, like Dec-Feb. that's when my family, especially my family in NJ, love to go. The climate in the Philippines is milder at that time and they get the best airline rates in Jan and Feb. I hear it's really nice at Christmas too. Your kids would be a bit older then too and it might make a huge difference!

@mrbee: Just wanted to say that their place looks incredible! And that song in the background totally reminded me of my paternal grandparents! Visayan was their native tongue and although I don't speak nor understand a word of it, it's a song I remember them singing.

As for long distance travel with babies ... you're brave! I'm Filipino and I've never been to Palawan or any of the resort islands. In fact, I haven't visited the Philippines since the 3rd grade! The longest trip I can see us doing with the LO would be to CA - it'll be a whole day of travel one way and I'm not really looking forward to it. But who knows, it might not be so bad.

You're brave! Travel with a toddler is a challenge, they like to move around and honestly, I hate the idea of walking up the aisles the entire flight. I wouldn't do it unless I had seats for both kids, but that's just me...I'd be a nutcase trying to keep a toddler entertained and holding a lap child.

I do think it's important for the kids to see their grandparents, so I'd suck it up and do it for them, YKWIM?

that sounds awesome!! I definitely want to go back to the Philippines with my girls one day. I'm thinking when they are a little older though, like 7 or 8 at the youngest. We would be flying from Los Angeles too, which is as "short" as 16 hours nonstop, I think.

The longest time I traveled with them though was from NYC to LA, overnight in LA with the family, then LA to Maui... same thing on the return. It was two 5-6 hour flights within 48 hours both ways... four separate flights within two weeks... and a six hour time change. They were 3.5 years old and 5 weeks old at the time. Great ages to fly, IMO so I was confident about it. After that trip though, i was spent.

@mrbee: there are direct flights from NY to hong kong and it's a 15ish hour flight if I recall correctly. Or taiwan might even be easier since its closer to the philippines I think.

I think flights to Asia are shorter from the West Coast? Haven't checked yet though...

We lived in Asia when our son was born. We flew back to ny for thanksgiving when he was 3 months. Singapore to Tokyo, Tokyo to ny. It was pretty easy because he just nursed and slept the entire time. We moved back to the states when he was 9 months. That flight from sg to la was not as successful, but we made it! He then went through a period where he was a vey good flyer (between age 1 and 2). After 2, it became super hard but now he's very interested in different modes of transportation, planes, trains, cars, buses, trucks, he did really well on our last flight.
I assume you're stopping in LA to see mrs bee's parents? Otherwise, wouldn't it be a little shorter travel time if you flew directly from NY to somewhere in Asia? Btw, that location looks gorgeous!
My husband might be going to hk for business in September. If so I'm seriously thinking about going as well. Kids will be 1 and 3 years old. I am crazy!

Wow, that would be an incredible, memorable trip!! No matter what age they are. And I'm sure the grandparents would be thrilled.

Wagon Jr. has never been on a plane. I'm too terrified. Wagon Sr. and I almost never travel either so it's not like we're avoiding specifically because of him... we just don't travel very often.

4-5 hours with a toddler is no joke. She doesn't sit still anymore!!
Okay. I just convinced myself not to go. HA.
It'll just be me and the babe, so yeah. -.- maybe if I wasn't pregnant.. not sure if I can handle the stress!

i think it's great that you guys are planning a trip to see your parents! man. I think Charlie should be fine on the plane, but not sure about a 10 month olive.
traveling with M was really easy when she was younger. Once she became more aware of her surroundings it got trickier.
We did a 2 hour trip when she was 10.5 months old and it was the longest 2 hours of my life! she was good on the way there but the trip back was sooooo keel me!
she didn't nap well which is why she was acting up, but still.
if you guys do travel, I highly recommend flying first/business. it makes the pain more bearable.

oh. the longest trip we took was 5 hours. from LA to ATL.
she was good there, but had a meltdown on our way back. She was 4 months old.

Okay, I've only been on a plane once with LO and she was 6.5 months at the time. It was a 3.5-hour flight and she slept 50% of the time, was happily occupied for 30% of the time, and then fussed/was restless the last 20%.

LO is now 10.5 months old and I'm not sure how she would be on the flight...She doesn't like to be still or held (ie. she likes to crawl around and cruise and play and explore)...Two days of travel is HARDCORE.

I don't know! It would be so exciting, though!

We took Charlie to LA when he was 12 months... he did great! It was 5-6 hours on a plane... I was expecting a meltdown, but it did not come.

Now we're considering a trip to visit my parents in August. They live on a remote island in the Philippines, so it would take us 2 days of travel to get there. Luckily though, we could break it into different flights: 1) NYC -> LA (5-6 hours), 2) LA -> Korea (12 hours), 3) Korea -> Manila (4 hours), 4) Overnight in Manila, 5) Manila -> Palawan Islands (1 hour or so on a puddle jumper).

I think Charlie would absolutely love it though. My parents run a small beachfront b&b in the Palawan Islands... some guy stayed there and posted some videos on YouTube, so you can get a feel for what it's like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oOuEZpcB84

Charlie would have a blast going on boats (his favorite), going island hopping to secret beaches, going fishing, walking on the beach, etc. And we would have free daycare from my mom and her friends. And Olive would just be happy to get more time with her mom and dad.

Still though... 2 days of travel. Yikes!!! I really want them to spend time with their grandparents though. Plus I think Charlie would have such a blast. And Olive's at an age where as long as she can nurse, she should be fine on the plane (crossing fingers!).

What do you think? What's the longest you've ever been on a plane with your LO? Would you take a 10 month old and a 32 month old on four planes for two days of travel?
