@Caly: I don't really remember too much. It was kind of like camping. We filled both bathtubs all the way so we could flush the toilets. Big jugs of bottled water to drink. And some friends in the other part of town got their electricity back like a week before us so we would shower and eat at their houses the second week. I have no clue how my parents kept us fed! I will have to ask. The thing that I remember the most is that we were evacuated and the cat peed on my mom in the car on our way home. So gross when you dont have running water to clean!

I was in the peace corps for 3 years and didn't have hot water the entire time. You get used to it! One year was in a very rural, high-altitude area and we would go weeks without running water, and when we finally got it again it was ice-cold. Those showers sucked, but also felt sooo good because I'd get so grimy. The other two years were in a high-altitude cloud forest, and it got pretty warm some days so cold showers felt pretty good, ha.

Last hurricane we were out of power for a couple of weeks but I left town after a couple of days so I only had to be uncomfortable a short while. We had a flight already booked as luck would have it.

@psw27: Ugh, all while being pregnant, that sounds awful!

@Tanjowen: Definitely not a saint...I don't think a saint would whine and complain as much as I did. Your dad sounds like a smart man! Ha!

@littlebit7: February in nyc without hot water sounds awful! And I imagine showering on the way to work every morning doesn't make for the best am routine.

@skippra: How did you survive two weeks without running water?! We have gas and this time I made sure we would have hot water even when the electricity goes out!

When I studied abroad, I stayed in an old dorm that only had hot water for an hour every morning and an hour every evening. Everyone clamored to use the shower room at that time. If you missed it, it was freezing cold water. I stayed there for two semesters.

The boiler system was intermittent as well. It would blast on high for about 15 minutes every two hours or so. We had to open the windows (even in the night) when it started or it would be like a sauna.

When I was little we lost our power during a hurricane and it took at least 2 weeks to get it restored. So not only was our hot water gone, so was all our running water since we had a well.
We had a gas water heater and city water at our last house so even when we lost our power for a week we still had hot water! It was amazing.

About a month. We had a gas leak in our multi unit (5 unit) building on the upper east side and the city locked the gas. And getting the gas unlocked post repair was a NIGHTMARE. Red tape and excuses and bureaucracy. I had to shower at my gym on the way to work. Oh and this was in February in NYC.

@Caly: You are a saint in my opinion. My husband would probably cave and get a hotel room before I would, haha. I have only gone a few days at a time due to power outages.

Growing up though, our hot water tank broke and whatever my Dad did to fix it, it didn't work very well and only held about 10 minutes worth of hot water. He decided to not bother with it because it forced us all to take short showers and get moving in the morning. :silly: To this day I ask my husband what on earth he is doing in the shower for 30 minutes!

I grew up in souther california and we had a lot of damage from the 1994 northridge earthquake. We were out of hot water for a while...maybe a couple weeks? Not sure. Power as well. I was in 6th grade so it didn't bother me as much as it would have now. I actually thought it was cool that we had to 'camp out' and all the neighbors were playing outside constantly since schools were closed due to damage.

I voted a couple of days... but technically we had no shower for three weeks once. And I was 6 months pregnant. And I was very angry about it! (Botched construction/delays). I had hot water for dishes and such but I couldn't use my shower so I had to go to the gym every morning (errr... every other morning really cause I gave up on showering if I was tired!)

In the U.S., I've never gone without hot water. I did though spend awhile living in an area of the developing world where there was no hot water (or heat!) and it did drop below freezing every night. It was pretty unpleasant at first but after awhile just became a fact of life, and I almost forget what a hot shower was like...

I voted two-three weeks- *but*- we kinda cheated. Ours went out last summer and we live in the southwest, literal desert. So, if we showered in the evening, about 5-7pm, the water would be hot for a shower. I'd wet down, turn off water, lather up, turn it back on to rinse, quick shave and done. My DD got hosed down outside!

I think it was only a fraction of a day. The gas company did some work and when they left the pilot light apparently had gone out, found out the next morning during my shower.

When DH was young, his family lived so remotely that they didn't have indoor plumbing. The used an outhouse, heated water in the stove and bathed in a bucket. When it was warm they bathed in the river. I could never.

Three months. I voted stone age.

We were renting and the landlord was doing non-permitted construction which punctured the water line and then destroyed the six month old boiler/water heater. It was a combo system and we were out of both heat and hot water from August-October.
We had to get a court order and put a lien on her property before she got it fixed.
It was awful.

@Adira: Wintertime without a hot water heater would be "stay at a hotel" to me!

@ Mrs. Pickle: Ugh, 16 days is a long time to go without power! We had a hurricane years ago that left us without power for a couple weeks and it sucked. A lot. Not having any power at all for an extended period of time is awful.

For us it would depend on what season it is. We live in New England, so in the winter, my hot shower is the only time I really get warm! I could only go a couple days without hot water in the winter and I'd just skip showers and be dirty!

Hot water?

Today marks 20 days for us. The power went out a couple weeks ago in our neighborhood and when it was restored, our hot water heater didn't come back on. We have a tankless and my husband isn't familiar with them so we had a company come take a look at it. Anyhow, a series of parts had to be ordered and ultimately, today, a new hot water heater is going in. Yes, those would be angels you hear singing. Nearly 3 weeks of cold showers and heating water on the stove like peasant woman has gotten really old.

So, how long have you gone without hot water?
