Most of my childhood, lol. None of the houses we've lived in since we've been married have had central air, but we have a window unit that we've drug along with us from house to house. Here in ND we really only "need" it for a week or two out of the year, and like @Pink Champagne said, it's a dry heat. But the sun on the Northern Plains is positively brutal when you're out in it and being inside with the kids can make the house really humid, so we use it. Most of the time we shut it off overnight though because things cool down so much when the sun goes down and the temps become positively pleasant and we open the windows and listen to the crickets chirping and the coyotes howling and yipping instead.

People in Seattle don't really have AC, and definitely not in Eastern Washington where I grew up (and summers are 90+ degrees!). The heat over there is a dry heat though, so no humidity and I think much more bearable.
We freeze wet washcloths and go to sleep with them on our foreheads to keep cool. Or close the windows during the day, but open them at night to cool down the house.

2 years and I learned that AC is one of those things I can't live without lol.

We have a window unit AC in our living room window, and it's only really on when it's super hot/humid. Otherwise we just leave the windows open.

3 months in the middle of a Texas summer... I worked for a church camp and the AC kept going out in the church. We couldn't even go upstairs to the dorms because it was so hot you would pass out after 5 minutes up there. We slept in the huge room downstairs with tons of fans and ice water and enjoyed car rides to other places because of the AC in the car and the places we went. It was MISERABLE.

Now that I am pregnant? I can't go more than a day without being in pain. We had our AC go out the other day and we were lucky enough that the came the next morning to fix it. I was DYING.

Living in Texas during the spring/summer/fall (so pretty much year round. lol) not having AC is killer. I have always had AC anywhere I lived unless it was broken. It is actually even required by law. It doesn't have to work great, it just has to be there. (Atleast if you are renting or selling a property. They could care less if you rip it out of your own home.... like a crazy person...)

I've lived without it most my life. I grew up in the mountains, so temperatures rarely got about 85 degrees or so, and the nights were always cool.

Even when I live in the amazon basin I didn't have AC...just relied on cold showers, fans, and open windows for breezes!

We have it now, but honestly, use it quite sparingly.

My freshmen dorm didn't have it. No AC in the muggy south. We kept doors open for a cross breeze, took cold showers before bedtime, and embraced the fan for all its worth!

Most college apartments I lived in only had window units, and the shared living spaces often didn't have one. Your bedroom was the sanctuary of cold air.

@mrbee: It's freezing in our apartment! LO is still wearing footed pajamas and we're wearing sweaters and sweatpants! Hopefully this means our apartment won't be steaming hot this summer.

We never had A/C growing up. DH and I bought A/C for our first apartment together but prior to that when I lived with roommates we never had A/C, just fans. One summer I had no fan for the beginning and I would wet a night gown in the sink, put it on, and go to bed.

Our condo didn't have AC and I lived there for almost 5 years. Our house AC is t working which we found out almost 2 weeks ago (first time trying to use it those year.). I've been distracted but finally called someone to look at it tomorrow morning because I also think it's affecting the baby's sleep. It's too hot with the swaddle and I am nervous about leaving her window open at night (one-story house).

Another vote for my entire life ;)

There is usually one week a year where it gets uncomfortable around here, and people end up buying small units that can roll around to different rooms in the house. I think they're pretty inexpensive as a short-term solution.

I didn't have central air at my college apartment, and my bedroom was a converted attic. I had a window unit, but beind on the third floor meant my window unit barely worked. So, I went three years. On the flip side, I hardly had heat too!

We have central air in our home but the unit broke. Fortunely my husband was able to fix it today!

It has been in the high 90s here and we have managed to not use the AC yet. We leave windows open at night with fans on and that gets lots of cool air circulated through the house. During the day it gets warm, but not horrible. We will most likely have to use the AC on a daily basis soon, but we are holding out as long as we can because our power bill gets crazy.

Yuck -only a couple days for us. Of course when our AC goes out, its in the middle of summer when temps are 110+(it seems to be the rule, not the exception) so, you can't really stay in a place w/o AC. And if you can, well, more power to you!

Since Friday, so 5 days including today. We just replaced the A/C and yesterday a repairman came to the house, but didn't have the tools or stuff to repair it. Hopefully he will be come by just as I get home from work. It's so freaking uncomfortable fanning hot air. DH about died over the weekend, but I refused to pay $129 for an after hours service call for a unit installed 6 months ago.

From birth until I was about 25? We didn't have AC at home and I didn't buy a window until until after a few years of really hot summers that I couldn't take it anymore.... or my tolerance got lower and lower as I got older. I live in MA though so it doesn't get that bad imo. Though hubby is turning on the AC night already since it heated up to 82 in our bedroom.

We went a few months without a working a/c...and we actually needed it in the winter! At the time we were renting in a condo building that had an exterior wall entirely made of glass so the place would turn into a greenhouse. The metal blinds didn't help and it took me months to prove that the thermostat was broken and it was in the 90s inside!

I'm in the south and have never lived without central AC. I would die. We've made middle-of-the night phone calls to the repair man to fix our air.

And I've never heard of fan death. Every house I've lived in has has at least one ceiling fan, and sometimes a stand alone fan, as well. We like our fans in Florida.

@mrbee: I know about fan death, and my mom always yelled at me for having a fan in my room when i was a kid. But the same link states: "The EPA does, however, approve of using a fan if a window is open and it's cooler outside, such as during overnight conditions, or if the indoor heat index in a closed room is below 90 °F (32 °C)."

We keep a fan going for a couple of hours when her room is really hot and then turn it off before i go to bed. Is there a difference between A/C and fan though?

ETA: The same link you sent also includes air conditioners as a cause of fan death.
