@aprild: the number i found for wake county was 36,500.

ETA: I just searched again and of course got 3 different answers haha. Of course it wouldn't be easy to figure out.

According to the salary schedule I would currently earn 36,500 with 6 years of experience. After 30 years it tops out at 50,000. We also get a bonus in nc that is dependent on which County we live in, and wake has one of the higher ones. So the average is in the middle rhere. There used to be boosts for having a masters degree, but those are no longer available to incoming teachers, though it may bump the average since those who already had a masters when the law was passed were grandfathered in.

$96k but when you look at the salary table it makes way more sense. They start out at $50k and are only eligible for the average salary with a masters degree after 15 years. I thought for a second that meant starting salary and I was like woah! Lol. We live in a higher than average col area and we also are in the top 10 schools in the country for all grade levels. I'm sure once teachers get hired here they never leave, which is why the average pay is so high.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yeah we went to look at a house for fun while we were on vacation last week. It was bigger than our house and about $200k less. In our town it would probably go for about $200k more than our house. We love the idea of a lower COL and no more winter weather. Not sure how strong the tech market is there though.

@ShootingStar: Tampa is very affordable and a great place to raise kids. My husband is a Fed Employee and gets a 13% Geo increase just for being at his office (not Tampa), whereas Tampa employees for his same department do not get a Geo increase b/c COL is low.

@fancyfunction: Ah. Where did you get your info? I just did some quick googling and was getting lower salaries for median on indeed.com and other random places. Like this website says $89,000 http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/local/2015/05/30/new-york-teachers-administrators-average-salaries-schools-pensions/28069873/#

Either way, $89,000 isn't going to get you far in Westchester. =)

@DesertDreams88: I'm a teacher in Texas and getting a masters in most districts only gives you $1-2k more a year. That's one reason why I decided to not get a masters. It would take me 10 years of working just to pay off getting my masters if I did one of the various online master's programs that are advertised to us as teachers.

I know that some of these medians sound good on paper but the benefits in my area are so expensive compared to your take home pay. Here is a link with healthcare costs. Districts contribute very little to these costs. I find it ridiculous that I am offered a healthcare plan with a very high deductible while also spending 1/3 of my monthly take home pay towards my insurance premium if I covered my whole family. Thankfully my husband's monthly premium is a fraction of the cost for a family with better coverage. I have teacher friends who are married to teachers. I don't know how they afford their health insurance!

Anddd my husband's district. Ridiculous. As you can imagine he will never get his masters degree. The only "good" thing is his district has a lot more long term, veteran teachers, so they have ok salaries because they climbed the salary steps back when they existed. Now they're frozen. Most districts in Phoenix have a stepless schedule like this now.

Based on convos with MANY people in my district (I'm my schools union rep) I'd estimate our median is about $39k for teachers. I live in Phoenix, so, medium cost of living??? AZ has one of the lowest student spending budgets in the nation, and has drastically cut since the recession . There is a ridiculous amount of turnover- 25% of our district teachers leave each year, and the new hires rarely are able to "transfer" their years of experience so they start at the bottom. Furthermore, this salary schedule is misleasing. This only determines your starting base pay. All future raises are a flat percentage or amount, based on board approval. In the past 4 years, I've gotten raises ranging from $400-$500, which is negated by the decreases in benefits. Sometimes they are not even raises, they are one-time payouts. Also, we have to contribute a mandatory 10%ish (can't remember the exact #) to our pension.

Also it's very rare for teachers to get a masters here because it take about 6-8 years for the cost to be covered by your raise. And forget the doctorate.... ha. Only some principals have those.

Last year my county adopted a pay for performance schedule with starting salaried at $40k. The average salary based on Indeed and Glass Door seems to be $48k, but goes up to $77k. If you have a masters you get an extra $1,600, but a doctorate gets you $8,000.

The starting salaries are not good money at all compared to the cost of living in our county/district. The middle and higher wage steps seem like very good compensation though. Master's prepared teachers have the potential to significantly out-earn what I make as an RN.

On our payscale, I guess 75,000 would be the average considering the payscale starts at 51k (lowest number of years in service and lowest number of post B.A. units) to 95,000 ( highest number of years in service and max units.) That's an average on what you *could* make but not necessarily what they do.
