In my city they have Mommy and Me movies from Tues-Thurs at the first showing (noonish) for a few of the newest movies. Cheaper prices, slightly lower volume, and a change table set up at the back with a light left on. I've taken LO several times since he was a few weeks old. I saw Avengers and Pitch Perfect 2. This might not work for you, but since I'm on maternity leave, it's great. I'd look into seeig if there are family friendly movies in your town.

We tried it for his 2nd birthday and took him to see Disney's Bears, a nature film. We lasted about an hour then said he was ready to go. We didn't try again until just recently (he turned 3 in April), and he seemed to enjoy it. No problems staying for the whole show. But I don't love going to the movies any more (seriously it's $10.25 for a movie ticket. That's insane!), so we won't go regularly until he starts asking.

@lamariniere: I always think L seems so sweet and sensitive. I  sweet, sensitive boys.

Ds is 2.5 and hasn't watched a full movie yet. He doesn't like loud noise either so we'll probably wait a couple years before taking him to a theatre. Even though I think he could def watch for an hour+.

We took Sadie to see Home when it came out. She was about 25 months. She loved it and did awesome. She's almost 2.5 now, and I'd take her again in a heartbeat. In fact, I can't wait to take her to see Inside Out! She keeps asking to see it.

We went last summer (I'd guess around 17 months?) to a cheap $2 theater with some friends to see Rio. K managed to do fine for about an hour, but we left bc our friend's LO was getting antsy. I'm planning to take her this summer to the theater days set up just for kids (cheap or even free) and the $2 theater again. No sweat if we end up having to leave.

I would consider a family friendly showing (like Alamo Drafthouse does where they turn the lights up and the sound down) earlier than a normal showing, but it would be really kid dependent. We took some friends' kids and the youngest was 2.5 - I spent half the movie taking her back and forth to the bathroom.

Definitely depends on the kid. DS is 4.5 and has never seen more than 20 minutes of an animated film. They scare him! He only made it through 2 minutes of Frozen before we had to turn it off. So at this rate, he probably won't go to the movies until he's at least 6!

I think it depends on the child and the movie. In general I've found that younger toddlers really like the animated movies with lots of music and songs... Even some animated movies have a lot of dialogue-heavy scenes that some kids just don't have the patience for, especially the younger they are!

But for us, DD1 saw Toy Story 3 when she was 2.5. She did great but fell asleep at the end. She saw Tangled at closer to 3 yo and that caught her attn more...

My 2nd DD saw Frozen at 2.5 and loved it! Sat in her seat most of the time! Since then she's seen Big Hero 6, Into the Woods, Cinderella and Inside Out as a 3 yo. We love going to the movies :)

Do they like movies at home? DD1 is 5 and still doesn't enjoy movies. She has no problems sitting still, but doesn't enjoy the drama/conflicts that are inevitable in movies. So it's not always just about attention span!

Maybe 3 or 4? I know each child is different, but I couldn't imagine my son sitting through a movie anytime soon. He just turned two, and his attention span is still very short. He can only watch TV for 15 minutes max before running off to do something else.

I took N at 2.5 to watch Frozen... she did great for the most part and loved the experience. She was so quiet throughout the whole thing, but we did have to leave after an hour and did not make it to the very end. I think if we didn't come early and skipped previews, we could've made it to the end. Luckily, the theater still gave us a refund on our tickets.

I think it depends on the kid - J is 2.5 now, and I don't think he'd be able to sit through a movie... I really want to watch Inside Out with the kids, so might just take N for a mommy/daughter date and wait til J is older.

@BabyBoecksMom: do any of the theaters near you have the cheap summer kid matinee series? Ours do a "summer movie express" thing that is super cheap and there's 1-2 kid movies every week. And since it's full of kids it was a low-pressure intro to the theater when we first took DS last summer, right around turning 3. He did great!

She's almost two and she only gets to watch tv for a few minutes on special occasions. I don't know if she could sit through a movie yet.

I have been taking my kids to movies since birth (the theatres near me do "Stars and Strollers" movies that are a touch quieter so you can bring babies - they even pull a change table into the back of the theatre). I found my son could sit through a movie at about age 2 1/2, he is 3 now and even shushes kids or babies that are being "too loud"

@lemondrop: He loves movies. I took him to see Home when that was out and he was a little antsy. To be fair, Home was super boring. For that one, we went when it was almost out of theaters (and school was in) so there weren't many people in the theatre. I was a little nervous for Inside Out because we went during opening week and it was shit packed. He was *really* into it and didn't budge the whole movie. There were lots of kids who talked, cried, got fidgety though. The great thing about kids movies is the great majority of people in there are parents going through the same thing you are. Kids of all ages are unpredictable so no one seemed to mind when one would act up.
