My ideal would be around 2000 sq. ft ranch/open floor plan plus a full done basement, so I guess total would be close to 4000 with both floors. the basement I want to be the kid zone, second living room/play room/guest room and bath plus a wet bar with mini kitchen (fridge, microwave, stove top?)

2500-3000? Our place right now is 2000, and it's fine for now but we will need more room with more kids. I just need 1 more bedroom and another area for kids to play.

Ideally 2500-300. We had 900 right now and it works for our family of three. But I would like space to entertain, host family events and parties, have a playroom, separate TV room etc. Plus room to grow :)

My house is 2080 and I think the layout is awesome so I don't mind that it's not huge. Maybe an extra 1000 for when the kids get bigger and adding a pet.

We have a small home, just under 1000sqft and I wouldn't say no to more space but really I just need some storage space. I have no basement, no attic, no garage! I keep stuff stored in my sister in law's attic but I really need to learn to let go. Pretty sure we are done with kids (twin 3 year olds and a 17 month old) and I still have almost all their clothes stored. We did a purge of house stuff not long ago but need to keep minimizing.

We have 2700+ now and it's probably just the right amount. I'd love if the basement were finished so we could move the exercise equipment down there, but otherwise I'm happy.

We currently live in 1000 (and no garage!) and it's too small. I think 2500 would be ideal. While I totally appreciate and drool over homes that are 5000 sq ft I like the coziness of homes that aren't too huge.

@Danizaur: exactly! More room = more cleaning that I'm not willing to do! :)

We have 1654sq ft over one floor/bungalow right now.

After the basement is finished (3200 sq ft or so) I seriously could not imagine what we'd do with more space than that. We have more than enough right now, and won't finish the basement for years.

I'd say 2800 sq ft finished would be ideal/perfect.

I prefer smaller. I had a house a few years ago that was big and I hated it, it was too big, never cozy and a PITA to keep clean and decorate. Our new house is just under 2000 sq ft and it's perfect!

We don't have kids and if we do ever have them, we will only have one so I'm not concerned about running out of room.

My ideal is probably a 3-4 bedroom with a great layout and lots and lots of windows! I'd rather a cozy house, but it HAS to have closets. I require closets. I go insane when I don't have enough space to store things.

I would also like a wood-burning fireplace and a great kitchen that overlooks the living room. It doesn't need to be big, it just needs to be really functional. Ideally, we'd also have a basement for storage, a garage for the car, and some sort of nice, private outdoor space. If we're close to a park, it doesn't have to be big, but I like to eat breakfast outside in the summer!

We currently have 1700sq ft, 2 story (3 bedroom, 3.5 bath).

I would say ideal is 2000-2500? 4 bedrooms or 3 bedrooms and an office/den/playroom. Ideally, that would all be above ground and then a decent basement for storage.

We're in around 1900 square feet right now, but the layout and storage is not great. Our last home was about the same size but had much better storage and flow. I think ideally I'd like about 2500 with a good layout and storage. I can't imagine keeping 3000+ square feet clean!

we currently have about 3800 livable sq footage in our home since we've reno'ed our basement. our first floor/basement is more than adequate space wise, but our upstairs is too small for LO + future LO(s). It's technically a 4 br, but the prev owners had the fourth br converted into the master walkin dressing room.

Our forever home that we'll build in the future will probably be around 4500 sq ft, but laid out better

I agree with @locavore_mama; it's not so much about square footage but flow. Our house is almost 3000sf, but I don't think it flows well because the garage was closed in and another living room was added, which has made it awkward. We have tons of unused floor space but no storage. I'd much prefer an 1800-2000sf home that flows nicely. And the fireplace is in the oddest location. Plus the more space we have the more stuff we seem to acquire, which is something I've been trying really hard to step away from.

Probably 2500 would be enough house for us when our family is complete. You would be surprised at how layout of a house can make it feel so much bigger than it is! Our 1500 sq ft home right now feels much bigger because it's all open.

If I'm getting my ideal house, that's means I have my ideal bank account that can afford a housekeeper, right?? Not that I want a HUGE house, I just suck at cleaning. I'd say 2,500-3,000 would be nice, but as a pretty open floor plan, and a basement that could be half nice storage and half finished as a older kid hangout space.

We currently have 1800 in a very urban setting. It's been great for the last six years, but is starting to feel small with a baby who wants more play space. We are looking at houses in the 'burbs now - and want closer to 3500-4000. I want a house I can live in for the next 30 years, which means big finished basement, 5 bedrooms, office, big family room, a big yard... The works.
