My doctor said Benadryl is fine, and I can use it if I am having trouble sleeping, too.

Doing IVF I was told no benadryl. At 8 weeks, I had a terrible rash from medications and I had to do something. So they told me I could. I took half a dose and that helped me.

You may want to talk to your regular doctor as well.

I've taken Benedryl here & there throughout the pregnancy. It's on the "probably safe" list, but my BFF (pharmacist) later told me Chlor-Trimeton (OTC) is even safer, so I use that unless I'm out. I seriously could not live w/out Benedryl or the Chlor-Trimeton! My allergies get terrible (skin, food, eyes, nose, and throat). Claritin does nothing for me!

p.s. If you want to clear it with the Dr., I suggest you ask to speak directly with the Dr. I had a nurse tell me for a month that I couldn't use my inhaler while I was suffering with asthma and bronchitis and tonsillitis. When I finally went back in to see the Dr. in person, she told me that I could take the inhaler and that it was needed and her nurse was wrong. A month of suffering because they wouldn't put me through to the Dr.! argh!

My doctors all told me to take it to help me sleep. That's interesting that you were told to avoid it. I'd definitely ask your OB. I'm sure you'd be fine.

I was told not to take stuff like benadryl because it can cause a decrease in amniotic fluid, because it reduces inflammation and mucous in your nose membranes. She said if it does it to your nose, it does it to your vagina. I've only taken Claritin so far.

BUT you're on it for food allergies, and that seems far too important to skip it over!

I'm pretty sure it's a class B drug..not expected to be harmful to unborn babies aka on the "safe list". My midwife okayed it (as needed).

I don't know why she would have told you not to take it, especially for food allergies. Are you supposed to let your throat close up?

My doctor says it's safe, too. Maybe ask your OB when the time comes? Or now.

It is on my safe list of drugs to take during pregnancy. I took it a couple times to help with congestion.

As I was going over my meds with the IVF nurse today, she gave me a lecture about taking Benadryl and told me not to take it once I get pregnant. She said to only take Claritin or Zyrtec. I said I take it because of my many food allergies, and no matter how hard I try it's impossible to avoid cross-contamination (I've learned that I have major reactions if an ingredient in my food has even touched an allergen in the past). I seriously could not live without Benadryl...I've been on it pretty much forever!

Does anyone have any idea why she might have said this?
