@hilsy85: thanks for the link!

as some of you mentioned i do find he is getting heavier and it's harder to carry him for long. again, i thought this was normal! but if i can get a carrier that i wear for longer without him then that's great.

i think i want to try to becco because of the different ways u can wear them, but i am just wondering then, why do some people choose the ergo over the becco if there are less wearing options?

@purrpletulips: that's what i thought too - that it was his disposition, but then i started to wonder if i was doing something wrong, like using the wrong carrier.

@PurpleUnicorn: for a long time I could only wear DS in the Baby Bjorn. He haaaaated facing in towards me. The Bjorn was a lifesaver in the beginning.

we were given a hand me down bjorn, so we tried it a few times -- it was fine for when he was small, but definitely got uncomfortable much more quickly than the other carriers we have. also, he used to get pressure leaks in his diaper from the bjorn (sounds like other ppl dont have this problem, though!)

anyway, my dream carrier which i found on craigslist was the beco gemini. i use it all the time and he can face in, out, and i can wear him on my back. love!

i dont think there is anything wrong with the bjorn, in my opinion it is just more suitable for when they are younger and lighter! :)

@PurpleUnicorn: I think the straight leg thing is probably a result of your LO's disposition rather than baby carrier you are using. Both my DD and DS were only every worn in our Ergo and both of them would do the leg straightening thing you are describing. Neither of my kids were "koala" babies in that they prefer to remain stiff legged when I'm holding them instead of clinging to me like some kids do.

All my friends "back in the day" used Bjorns because that was really the only carrier out there. I bought the Ergo because all of my friends who had babies a year or so before me had the Ergo and swore it was much better. I also chose it because of the hip dysplasia issues. When i go out with the Ergo, we go on walks/hikes that could be for a few hours. I couldn't imagine doing the same thing in a Bjorn. Also, I found the Ergo much better when doing mommy and me dance/fitness classes because it holds the baby close...which means less injuries for mommy.

I would ask your pedi. I bought a Baby Bjorn (we only use a sling now because it's most comfortable for both of us) and asked my pedi about the BB hip issue after hearing about it. He sort of snorted and said unless I was planning on having LO in the bjorn for upwards of like 15 hours a day, every day, not to worry.

There are the hip issues that other people mentioned, but among people I know, their main complaint is that it's uncomfortable after a while, while the Ergo or Beco has a hip belt to help support the weight.

If you are concerned about facing out, the Beco Gemini has face in or out, which is why I'm getting that over the Ergo. There may be similar concerns about the baby's hips, not really sure, so I plan to still keep the baby facing in most of the time, but I like to have the option. They are similarly priced.

I have teh Ergo, Baby Bjorn, Moby Wrap, and the K'tan. I stopped using the Bjorn because as my kiddos got heavier it was harder to wear them for long periods of time. I totally prefer it to the Ergo when the baby is tiny. However, in the Ergo they can't face out, and DS hates that! I have discovered the side wearing position with the Ergo and that is nice. The Moby Wrap is fantastic, if it is cold out. I got SO hot in that (even in NY in March....) that I couldn't use it now (we have moved to TX). The K'tan, I just can't figure it out well and DS weighs too much to make that even remotely comfortable for me.

So, I say if the Bjorn works for you, awesome! Mine doesn't have any lower back support and that is why I stopped using it once the babies got to be about 6 months old.

FWIW - we have an Ergo and love it. I've never felt sore after wearing it, even for extended periods of time.

There was a great Hello Bee blog post a few months ago on structured carries. Search for that, it will give you good information.

@hilsy85: thanks for posting that! I was looking for a link but couldn't find it on my phone.

@PurpleUnicorn: Maybe? If you are concerned I would ask the next time your LO see's the pedi. My LO always wraps his legs around me when I hold him, sort of like how he sits in his carrier, so maybe there is a connection.

My son loves the bjorn. But we use it mostly when we are out and about on weekends and not for more than an hour at a time (it does hurt my back after a while).

My son hates facing inward so I don't think the Ergo would have been good for us, but we've never tried it.

This link has a good image of how the BB holds a baby versus how an Ergo (for example) holds a baby.

@anbanan15: ohhh, i have heard people (online) say something about crotch dangler, but I had no idea what they meant. I wonder if this is why he won't sit now? like on my lap, he always stiffens and i have to stand up to hold him or hold him so he is standing on my lap when I am sitting.....i really always thought it was just him being fussy.

It puts a lot of strain on their hips and is called the "crotch dangler" since all their weight is distributed to the crotch area. In a proper baby wearing position you want baby to be seated with knees above the bum like in the Ergo or proper wrapping of the Moby.

So before L was born, I wasn't on HB a lot and just took the advice from my sister and friend on baby gear. One thing I didn't research at all and just took their word for was the Baby Bjorn carrier. I bought it and have been using it for about 4 months now and my baby LOVES being in it. I've called it the "magical cure". It's easy to use, it always calms him, he has napped in it, etc.... And I don't find it uncomfortable. Sure, after a couple of hours, my lower back would get tired/sore, but I thought that was normal because I had this extra load (baby) on me.

But all over HB, I feel like all I read about is the Ergo, the Moby, and a few others. Never the Bjorn. And I've seen some comments saying the Bjorn is potentially bad for the baby? Can someone explain this to me? Should I be looking for a new carrier? And are these others carriers made so you can wear for hours without any discomfort despite the extra "load"?

Another issue I have with the Bjorn is that I can only sit down once he is asleep, but L is like even without the carrier....I always have to stand if I am holding him, so I didn't think it was related to the carrier.....not I am not sure.
