@Anagram: That's how my cousins district is. She could use sick days before the baby was born, but not as she was recovering from a c-section. Makes no sense!!!

I also work for a DC employer. One neat thing about DC-FMLA is that you get both 16 weeks of medical leave AND 16 weeks of family leave. So, theoretically, you could have medical leave during your final weeks of pregnancy and 6 weeks postpartum, then an additional 16 weeks of family leave.

One downside to DC-FMLA is that the 16 weeks are per every 2 years. If you have Irish twins you could be out of luck leave-wise.

My employer offers a 60% pay STD plan, however, the plan stipulates that you must exhaust all of your sick/vacation/personal leave before STD kicks in. STD benefits terminate at 6wks post vaginal delivery, 8 weeks post c-section. So, if you've saved up leave, STD doesn't apply.

We don't have any specific new parent paid leave, but, our sick and vacation leave policies are generous enough that it is possible to build up about 13 weeks of paid leave. Anything beyond that is unpaid.

US/DC, medium sized nonprofit (75 full time staff). Our policy is fantastic if you've been there more than a year. DC has a 16 week leave law, 4 weeks higher than federal so we get 16 weeks regardless. Company pays 8 weeks of leave at full pay. Then disability kicks in- 6 weeks for a csec, 4 for vaginal, at 60%. After that, we can use a max of 4 weeks of PTO (vacay and sick days). I had a csec and my full 16 week leave was paid for in full except the 6 weeks of 60% disability. One caveat is that you must come back to work for a 3 month minimum or you pay back all the leave.

@Anya: I think it's really nice of them to offer that..I won't be doing it because I'm in sales, and our sales ranking is based on how much we make in bonus. If you work part time, they pro-rate your bonus accordingly, therefore your rank drops and you're basically at the bottom for the year. I don't want to have to deal with that for a lot of reasons- mommy-tracking, I like my big bonuses, annual pay raise, etc. So it's nice and I'm sure others can utilize it and it's minor repercussion, but I've worked too hard to be at the top, and it feels good, and I don't want to lose it:)

@PrincessBaby: that sounds like a really nice program.

Mine is 6-8 weeks STD (70%) concurrent with whatever PTO you have and the rest is unpaid FMLA.

@JennyG: in my current school district, we aren't allowed to take accrued sick days. The district reasons that the time after giving birth, the woman isn't sick and the teacher's union agreed to it.

I'm in NZ and if working I would be eligible to take sixteen weeks of government-paid leave and another 36 weeks of unpaid leave. Total parental leave tops out at 52 weeks and ends on the child's first birthday at which point your job is no longer protected.

With Miss A, I took four weeks of vacation time before starting my parental leave on my due date.

One of the largest U.S. federal agencies. You get 12 weeks fmla, but you're allowed to use up any leave you have built up, and our agency will advance you sick leave up until the calendar year's end. I have been working for 2yrs, but ha ent built up a whole lot yet, and am having a baby in middle of year. I'm taking 9 weeks paid, 5 weeks of it advance leave I will owe whe I get back. Most women in my office take 6-8 weeks. I only know of one who took 12. I can ask my employer if I can work the last 3 weeks telework at home, so 12 weeks out of the office and I'm pretty sure she would be more than agreeable to do that. I have hyperemesis, and they offered medical telework for me, and I've been working from home since November no questions asked. I'm pleased with the leave situation. Especially, since I'm still a "newish" employee in the federal government! You come back to your same exact job. It would take an act of congress (literally) for me to get fired since I'm now a permanent employee.

US. You pay into short term disability because you have to be on it to get it if you were to get pregnant. Short term disability gets you 4 weeks at 60% pay. If you don't pay into STD, you get nothing. Other than that, you use pto.

No paternity leave.

I worked for a division of a global advertising agency when I had LO.

Their policy was decent, I thought, though a little confusing. There was 6-8 weeks of short term disability leave, depending on vaginal or C-section delivery. The company offered 2-4 weeks of paid leave for all parents in addition, depending on how long you had been with the company.

On top of that, there is a CA state law that requires employers to provide partial pay for six weeks of "baby bonding time." I didn't live in CA, but my employer still gave me this partial pay.

So if you had a vaginal birth and had only been with the company for 1 year, you would receive the minimum - 8 weeks of fully paid leave plus 6 weeks of partially paid leave. The way I looked at it was more like 11 weeks of fully paid leave because they just deposited my full paychecks until it was gone.

I actually got 13 weeks because I had a C-section and therefore got more STD. And then I quit. (I was very unhappy there, and HR assured me that maternity leave benefits were "mine to take" regardless of whether I returned, so no guilt.)

Now I freelance and I have no maternity leave!

DH's company offers 2 weeks of paid leave for the "secondary caregiver" (usually dad) and 8 weeks of paid leave for the "primary caregiver" (usually mom) regardless of birth or adoption. But they are pretty flexible - he ended up really taking 3 weeks and they didn't deduct the extra week from his vacation. And I know someone in his company who went back part-time after 8 weeks for another couple months, at full pay.

12 weeks, paid. It is pretty standard for finance firms.

When I was abroad, I was eligible for 7 months, but that was the company policy. The government only mandates 12 weeks paid.

@regberadaisy: Thanks! Yeah my company's policy is amazing. Though they use an outside company to interact with to get the benfits and they are a pain in the butt. They have gotten my dates wrong 3 times and I have had to call them back to send me new paperwork all the time. The outside company can lock your timecard, which doesn't sound bad but it has affected me and another co-worker that's just returning back to work. The bureaucracy! :)

I'm a public school teacher and have worked in two states. Some of this varies by school district but in my particular districts:

Texas:
-FMLA for 12 weeks (unpaid mat leave)
-could elect to pay for STD, and the payments would be taken out of your paycheck
-could use saved up sick leave to pay for mat leave, but you only got 5 sick days a year, so it's not super likely you would have a ton saved up. No vacation days.
FMLA started the day you give birth, whether or not it was on School holiday. So, if you gae birth June 5th, the day summer break started, you got 12 weeks from that day.

NJ:

Job offers unpaid FMLA for 12 weeks
-You can elect to buy your own STD for 6 weeks
-NJ state pays a small stiped for 6 weeks under the state's "Family leave insurance". The top amount was about 1/3 of my monthly salary.

*if you are a tenured teacher, you can take up to 1 year off unpaid and keep your exact job. You can take up to 2 years unpaid and have a job somewhere in the district, but not necessarily your same school, same grade, or same subject.

I was untenured, so that didn't apply to me.

No actual maternity leave policy. You use STD and the amount you are paid is based upon your position or years of service. I got 8 weeks paid (had a section). I then had 4 weeks from FMLA that were unpaid. I saved vacation to at least get another two weeks paid. I actually come out better with the c section because I get an additional 2 weeks paid.

I took 15 weeks, the last 6 of which I worked on one project on an hourly basis. (I'm a consultant). My company also continued to pay my benefits which I don't think is a given.

I get 12 weeks off under FMLA. The first 6-8 weeks are paid under extended illness and vacation days, and the rest is unpaid unless you take more vacation. They make you take one week of vacation at the beginning before the extended illness kicks in.

In US, working for a very big company that is owned by a bigger French company. It's pretty goid by US standards.

Can take 12 weeks FMLA.
Company gives all parents 2 weeks paid
Then Short term disability kicks in, pays 100% for 6 or 8 weeks (vaginal birth or c section).
Then you can use vacation time if you have it to get paid for the remainder.
There is also an option to do a gradual return to work - 3 days/week @ 60% pay for a month, then 4 days/week @ 80% pay for a second month (sadly we couldn't afford for me to take the pay cut).

Can take up to 12 weeks. Must use all pto first, and then once that is used up you get docked your daily rate of pay.

So, for DS I had saved up about 40 vacation days, so I took an 8 week leave and got all my checks. With DD, I only had about 8 vacation days, so I used those and then took 8 more weeks off and got docked every day so I didn't get a paycheck for 4 months. I also had 2 vacation days taken away this year because I hadn't earned my 10 vacation days based on my contract time.

@T.H.O.U.: Me too with the local government job. No paid leave, but we were able to sign up for short-term disability that paid 75% of pay for 6 weeks. I had so much sick/vacation time I was out for 12 weeks and had it all paid except the last week.
