My husband can drink all night and be perfectly fine driving. If I have 3 or 4 of anything I should not drive. Either way neither of us would pass a sobriety test.

@hummusgirl: I will have one if we will be there more than 2 hours. For a baseball game, we get there early, I will have 1 an hour before the game, and split one with my husband. So 1.5 and then drive 4 hours later.

If I'm driving, I'll have zero drinks... it's just easier for me to have none, versus having some and figuring out where the line is!

@Mae: yeah, I once had three beers within 90 minutes, and then used a friends breathalyzer about 30 mins later and was still under the limit.

Honestly, I generally go by how I feel.

I rarely drink so even one glass of wine will make me feel tipsy at times, so if I've had any alcohol, I don't drive.

Usually 1-2 drinks. 2 only if I'm there for a while. I never really drink more than 2 drinks anyways though. And if I'm with my husband I have him drive if I've been drinking at all (he doesn't drink).

My friend has a portable breathalyzer thing and I tried it out once when we were out and was surprised how much it took for me to be over the limit. I think I have a pretty low tolerance so I definitely felt too drunk to drive before I was over the limit (but I drink infrequently so that is not shocking). So I generally feel like if I feel okay to drive then I'm certainly under the limit.

I'm in your same exact situation! Currently in NYC planning a move to PA and wondering this same thing. We have been spoiled here being able to indulge in boozy nights anytime we want and go to happy hour not worrying about driving home.

When we move i plan to buy us breathalyzers to keep in our cars so at least at first we can use them to get a sense of how much is a safe amount to drink. Also, I will make sure to research cab companies (they do exist!) and keep their cards in my wallet. Normally though when I am the DD I nurse a glass of wine all night or completely refrain depending on how long we will be out and how much I am eating. Either way there will be a lot less drinking (out) once we leave this city!

We keep breathalyzers in our cars, so we don't have to make that call. It takes all the guess work and risk out of it.

i would have one to two max, depending on how long i am out.

I remember hearing the one drink per hour rule when i was younger, but i would never, for example, have 5 drinks in 5 hours and then drive home!! I think you have to be reasonable with and take that with a grain of salt. And even if i have just one drink, i would wait more than an hour before driving.

One with dinner for me...or if we are out for the night and I am DD, I may have two earlier in the night (beer only!). If I know I will be around for at least three hours, I know that's enough time for it to leave my system. I think it's just about getting to know how you feel after one or two. If I can feel it at all, I will not drive.

Uber just came to our city so I'm excited about the future possibilities. Drunk driving is common here and it makes me super uncomfortable when we're out late. I only have one drink if we're driving and DH rarely drinks. He's a lightweight so if he's drinking, I won't.

@matador84: Austin :-) Uber's a good idea, and I just found something called "Tipsy Taxi" where they'll drive you home in your own car. I'd much rather pay and not have to worry about this at all.

I just don't drink when we're out. I'm so paranoid about DUIs. They are expensive life ruiners, and cops in Texas are always on the hunt. Plus, with so many drunk drivers on the road, I want all my faculties when I'm behind the wheel. The risks just aren't worth it to me at all.
