@MUI831: I have to be reminded too. I don't think it's nagging if it's something that truly bothers you!

@MaryM: Actually yes. I've told him that it bothers me and he'll put it down when I say something but I always feel like a nag. Clearly I need to phrase it differently.

Something really yummy for dinner. Candlelight and nice china in the dining room. Open a bottle of wine. Afterwards, play chess over scotch.

Alternatively, I like to sit out on the patio with a pitcher of drinks and talk or play gin.

@MUI831: Does your DH realize that his phone bothers you?

It was something I used to mindlessly do...but once DH brought it up that he felt like I was avoiding him (I wasn't, it's just my way to unwind), I started getting better and at least have it out of reach during meals and if we're talking.

Like twice a year we do this.

Filet Mignon (You can get this cheap at costco like 11 dollars a pound I think)
Grilled onions and mushrooms
Creamy mash potatoes
Wine

My DH really loves a good steak but it's too pricy to have Filet Mignon at a restaurant and he has gotten good at cooking over the years we have been doing this. I cook everything else. It's really nice. Good food and good company.

We normally follow up with a movie on DVD or streaming now.

This summer we have a standing Friday night campfire date! We either roast hotdogs or pie irons/fudgie pots (the little cast iron things you put grilled cheese, etc. in) and sit by the fire and talk. Of course some Fridays it doesn't work, but we do our best.

In the winter we play games or work on a (never-ending) puzzle.

We're simple - some good takeout and a movie or favorite show. Tonight we're getting deep dish pizza and watching the Rangers (hopefully) lose their first Stanley Cup game ;)

Honestly, just wine and a movie. Snuggle time. Sitting on the patio is nice, too.

And this is why we need to bite the bullet and just get the patio furniture that I've been wanting! My only concern is that the monitor doesn't stretch that far so we'll have to get creative with that.

Actually a great night would just be convincing DH to put down the phone!

Thanks for the suggestions.

We like to make fondue, and camp out in the living room with a fancy spread. We also dig board games, trivia, and cards. Having a glass of wine or a slice of pie out on the deck is nice, in the warmer months. When I'm lucky, we trade massages and listen to music.

I was going to suggest the same as @snowjewelz:

Getting away from the TV is the biggest hurdle for us. But DH LOVES spending time outside when it's nice out.

Eat at the table, no TV/phone/distractions so you can talk. We also play games; Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Dominos, ect. instead of a movie so we can talk more. On a nice night, take the monitor outside and sit and enjoy the night with your cocktail.

Do you have a patio/back yard where you can bring your dinner outside to eat, maybe light a candle or two? In the summer we always bring our dinner to eat outside and it feels more special than eating in!

The other post asking if you have regular date nights had me thinking that I need to put in more effort to do more date nights. And if we can't always afford a babysitter or don't want to go out, then surely there are some good ideas on how to make a night special even when we're at home. DH and I fall into the same routine of putting the baby to bed, getting our dinner ready and eating in front of the tv with a cocktail or glass of wine with our latest Netflix movie. And that's ok but I want to switch it up.

What do you like to do? My issue is that it's hard to make anything a surprise since I work full time and DH works from home a lot. I'm usually racing to get home at the end of the day in order to spend as much time with DS before he heads to bed so I don't want to stop at a store on the way home.

Thoughts? Thanks!
