@looch: she will only eat just before sleeping. Not after nor part way between naps. She's a weirdo. :)

@Mae: Sleep the first year, we were on three naps for quite a while, we didn't consolidate to two naps until he was almost a year!

Can you do smaller feeds, before and after naps? That's what we did, with the exception of overnight, where we topped him up but he woke out of habit, even though he should have been metabolically able to sleep through.

S is 12 months and we still feed her formula (or now, mostly WCM) on demand...roughly she has 6oz mid-morning, 6oz mid-afternoon and maybe a couple of oz before bed. It does vary depending on how busy she is and how much (or little) solids she eats. I used to worry a lot about how much milk she was getting, but now I just don't care so long as her weight gain is consistent and she's not dehydrated. She has different looking sippy cups for milk and water so she knows which one to pick up...so we just let her lead.

@looch: what did sleeping look like then? My quandary is that it seems like she could do a 4 hr schedule for eating, but I don't think she is ready for that on naps bc she can't be up more than 1.5 hrs still!

@Mae: I'd definitely try it! It's normal for them to consolidate feedings. C did it fairly early on.

@Mamasig: I really wish that LO would take milk cold so I could just make a whole bunch in the morning and pour out what I want all day :)

@kes18: Usually only around 22 or 23 oz/day. Sometimes 24 or 25, sometimes 20. She used to eat more like 28-30 but we had some eating issues due to allergy and she dropped way down on what she ate. So I'm never concerned about her eating too much.

@loveisstrange: My babe refuses to eat overnight (not that she doesn't wake me up. She certainly does. Just not for food :) ). So I think maybe she just wants 4 big bottles. I may try it this weekend and see!

C was sort of roughly: 8:30am wakeup and bottle. 10-11:30 nap then bottle. 1-3:30pm nap then bottle, 6pm bedtime and bottle. She had 1 night feeding around 2-3am. So, 5 bottles a day, and she was doing like 6oz at a time for ~30oz total. This would have been around the 4-6 month mark. I think by 6 months, it was 4 8oz bottles instead and she dropped the night feeding.

Well my 5 mo is BF and bottle fed (pumped BM 3x/day) but she eats 7 times in 24 hours.

At 4 months she was taking 3-4oz bottles over the daytime when I was gone but I started increasing her bottles over the past month because of sleep regression and the fact that her bedtime at 8pm meant she had dropped the 8th feeding. Giving her bigger bottles during the day (I think) has helped her sleep better at night. So she is 5m1w and I give her 2 6oz bottles (tried one with 7oz today, will see if she finished) and 1 4.5oz bottle. The reason for the 4.5oz one is because she eats that one at 3-3:30 and I am home at 5 and I like to nurse her then.

Otherwise, she nurses at 5pm, 7:30pm, and right now around 2am and 5am. Bottles are around 9am, 12pm, and 3pm.

So I would offer her a bigger bottle. If she doesn't want it she'll leave it in the bottle and if it really is too much for her tummy it'll probably come right back up :) But I don't think there's any harm in offering it, she might just take it! 7oz doesn't seem too big to me, there's no harm in offering it.

How many oz on average does she eat in one day? I'd just try to keep up that # of oz, 4 feedings a day does seem a little low to me for a 4-5 month old but I imagine if she's getting the same number of oz it would be fine.

At 4 months by DD was still nursing but also taking bottles at daycare. She would nurse in the morning before I left for work, then would get 3 - 4 0z bottles at daycare plus a 2 oz top up before I picked her up. Then she'd nurse once at night to go to bed. I always guestimated that she was getting between 20-24 oz's a day.

Now at 10 months she gets 4 - 4 oz bottles throughout the day and 3 meals plus one snack.

At 4 months, DS1 ate about 7 bottles of 8oz. Maybe even 8 bottles. He usually finished every bottle. He started baby food at 4 months and started dropping bottles slowly.

DS2 is more like Fia. I usually prepare 6 oz bottles and sometimes he drinks them all and sometimes he leaves a few ounces. He probably has 8-9 bottles in 24 hours but some of those may be "snack" bottles.

My boys tend to eat a lot.

I prepare the bottles in a big batch. So if I want 5 six ounce bottles, I'll mix 28 ounces if water with 14 scoops. It makes about 30 ounces or so. So in your example, I would count it as 6.75 ounces if she drinks it all.

We weaned onto formula between 6mo and 7mo, when EBF LO was having 5 or 6 feeds a day, but as soon as we introduced formula he dropped a feed. He would eat 8oz at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm (or around about those times). Now at 9mo he's upped his solids and water and only takes 8oz, 4oz, 4oz and 7oz (same times).

I never count the extra from powder just coz it would get so confusing! I reckon when most people refer to daily amounts etc they are not including the extra.

I would just try offering her a bigger bottle and see what happens, sounds like she'll let you know if it's too much for her

Just curious to see how much/how often LOs eat, especially around the 4-5 month mark but really any time in the first year :)

I'm finally at a place where I am comfortable with how much LO (4 months) is eating but we don't have a ton of consistency with when she eats or how much she eats at a time. Usually its around 5-6 times per day, but sometimes she'll eat 4-5 oz at each meal, and sometimes she alternates between finishing the whole bottle offered (6.75oz) and only eating 2-3oz. No rhyme or reason.

More and more lately, she has been finishing her whole bottle and then not wanting a ton at the next offered feeding-- I'm wondering if she's telling me she'd rather drop to 4 feedings/day with bigger bottles? But I'm a little nervous about offering her more than 6.75 oz because that just seems like so much for a little tummy!

Also, for formula moms, do you count the "extra" you get when you mix formula? Like, if I mix 6oz water and 3 scoops as directed, it makes 6.75 oz. And I count the .75 oz because thats a decent amount of extra food that is taking up room in her belly.
