I would say we mostly eat pretty healthy, we aren't organic though. I buy produce from a local produce store that is open year round and sells local produce. My parents have a vineyard (mostly pinot noir but there are a few rows of concord) they also have an apple and pear orchard so we're pretty set in the fall with fruit. We also raise our own beef, and only feed grass hay no grain, hopefully this year we'll be raising a pig as well. I try to buy all of our bread from either The Red Mill Store or Dave's Killer Bread (both of those stores are across the street from each other and offer fantastic discounts) when I'm up to it I make it myself with the bread machine.
It's nice to know where your food comes from.

We do give the kids mac 'n cheese, top ramen, or other processed foods every once in a while. It's hard to stay completely away from, and I ate it as a kid and I'm not unhealthy. McDonald's I try to avoid, but with a 10 year old it's hard, maybe once a month.

out baby isnt here yet but the two of us try to eat very healthy, we avoid processed foods and do mostly buy products that are organic, free range etc. I also dont understand why most kids I know only eat processed foods like kraft mac n cheese or chicken nuggets, I want my kids ot be able to eat regular food and lots of fruits and veggies so we will work towards that. I do plan to buy a baby bullet and make my own baby food

As a general rule when we grocery shop, 90% of the items in the cart are three ingredients or less. We shop organic with the dirty dozen list and buy the rest conventionally so that we can afford it. We avoid excessive grains, and only eat whole grains at that, or try for healthier variations like quinoa or brown rice. Lots of veggies & fruits for sure.
By the way, I would be proud to classify myself as a "crunchy mom" but I do have a little ways to go!

We eat local foods. Our milk comes from cows in our county, the apples are grown down the road and we get our beef directly from a family member. All of our foods are labelled with the country of origin, so I know down to our onions where the food comes so I can make decisions about eating or not. I feel very lucky to be able to eat this way. We don't buy organic because it's not regulated here and I don't feel it is worth the difference in price.

We don't eat a lot of processed or packaged foods, but I do use them from time to time when I using them saves me time and money, like jarred pesto or yogurt. We also eat at McDonalds, but the beef and potatoes are also local, so I feel better about that.

We don't do organic foods mostly but we are moving to a more paleo diet lifestyle. Even though I haven't fully given up sugar, my little man gets little to no sugar. He is also allergic to foods so we are making sooooo much food now. Processed food is mostly not allowed. He does get a few processed foods (puffs) for snacks.

Ditto!!!

@hilsy85:
You make a very good point re: processed foods. I was thinking only along the lines of say Stove Top Stuffing, Betty Crocker Mashed potatoes, frozen fish sticks, Lean Cuisine, etc. But you're right, I do eat instant oatmeal, chips, etc.

I'm not that hung up on buying organic - I'd rather buy local veggies that are not certified organic, than buy certified organic veggies that have been flown across the country. Being certified organic is a really expensive process for farmers, and I don't really trust the labels "natural" or "organic" to be what they say all the time. There are "100% natural" Dinosaur shaped frozen chicken nuggets for sale at BJ's - sorry, but that's just not what I consider to be "100% natural"! ;-0

My philosophy is to try to eat as simply, cleanly and locally as possible the majority of the time, which is how we'll feed LO.

We don't generally buy organic.

We don't eat much processed food, mostly we cook from scratch. I try to cook most of LO's food but have no problem using jarred food. We don't generally eat fast food.

Ideally, when LO is here, we'll buy most of our fruits and veggies at the farmer's market. What we can't get there, we might order from Fresh Direct (they have a pretty good local foods section) or buy organic. We've also become more conscious of what we're putting in our bodies (thanks in large part to reading Michael Pollan's books and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle--highly recommend both) and we generally try to stay away from super processed foods now. HOwever, I'm realistic too---I know that we're going to end up buying processed cereals, snacks, etc sometimes, because we like how they taste! I"m okay with that, as long as the majority is local/organic. I definitely want our LO to grow up with a healthy diet and a healthy attitude toward food.

I'd say that half of the things I buy are organic and half not. I try to give the younger one mostly organic foods. The older just eats what we eat. We cook during the week 100% but sometimes we go out to eat or get takeout on the weekends. We do consume some processed foods though. I think the key always is moderation and balance.

I usually buy whatever I find at the farmer's market for LO. She only eats puree's that I make so it's not too hard to feed her healthy.

I feed the LO mostly organic food but I don't go over board with it. If there is an organic version at the store, then I will pick that or else I don't go out of my way. But I always do organic milk, eggs, and meat. I cook just about everything we eat from scratch so I know what's in it.

My husband and I are not processed food people. We barely were during our college days and certainly have not been since we didn't have to pinch pennies. :) So we do not intend to start feeding our children processed food. Everything we eat is cooked made from scratch. No boxed potatoes, no frozen foods, etc.

As far as "organic" goes. I'm not convinced everything out there that claims to be "organic" IS. I know some of you believe there are FDA regulations against this. But there are ways around it. Just like the whole "green" thing. So many products claim to be "green" but they are not. It's called green washing.

Having had the chance to meet with many local farmers who are "certified naturally grown" I now know the difference between farmers who use pesticides, who are certified organic and certified naturally grown.
We believe in buying naturally grown but don't feel the need to go to the extent of "organic".

(We only have one LO eating solids (Charlie)... our 5-month-old (Olive) is still BFing.)

For Charlie, we have been feeding him mostly organic food that hasn't been processed. That matches a change that Mrs. Bee and I have been making in our own diets: towards organic foods and away from processed foods. We also use mostly glass, and have gotten rid of a lot of plastic containers that had (or might have had) BPA in them.

In general, I have become a growing believer that the food industry in America is completely broken. Subsidies in corn have flooded the market with cheap high fructose corn syrup, and calorie-dense processed foods are tricking our tummies into thinking we're not full when in fact we've eaten tons of calories. I was trapped inside that way of eating for a long time, and it's only in the past few years that I've been able to break out of the trap. It's been a very slow journey, and one that I'm hoping Charlie won't have to go through!

I have already cut out a lot of sugar and refined carbs from my diet, but I still don't feel like my diet is as healthy as I would like it to be. So I've been adding a lot of veggies and fruits to my eating, and I feel a whole lot better. I guess I've stopped focusing on how I feel while I'm eating, and started focusing more on how I feel over the course of the day. That's leading me to eat much less meat than I used to, and to eat a lot more veggies and fruit. I'm very very sad about eating less meat though, as I just love it so much.

I guess overall, we're moving towards eating more organic and non-processed food... haha it all sounds so "crunchy" when I put it that way! I have never really been very crunchy/granola, so even I'm surprised that I've made this shift. What I like about it is that I've read that this is a big way that you can slow down the aging process... and I'd really love to be around when the kids are older.

What's your general philosophy around the foods you feed your LO and/or family? Has having a LO resulted in any changes to the day-to-day foods that you eat?
