our go-tos: scrambled eggs, oatmeal (stir in nuts, frozen or dried fruit, peanut or almond butter, and almonds), yogurt and granola with fruit, smoothies, and quinoa made with a bit of orange juice + almonds + dried apricots.

Most days, he asks for yogurt though.

Scrambled eggs and a piece of toast. We get our eggs from a local farmer, so they're free range and organic. DD loves her eggs... which is good b/c she won't eat most other animal protein. Because she doesn't eat much meat, I try to give her eggs on as many mornings of the week as possible.

Most days it is Cheerios, but they can only do that so much, so we also do scrambled eggs, peanut butter toast, fruit and steel cut oats.

Yes, we have to mix it up too! Scrambled eggs, sausage links and rice are a favorite. Another is Cheerios and milk with a banana. Some days it is a frozen waffle with sausage. My super easy fallback is McDonald's pancakes and sausage on the go.

@irene: @locavore_mama: When i reduce the sugar amount, i make sure to up the liquids (since sugar adds to the moisture). For instance, in this recipe (http://wednesdaychef.typepad.com/the_wednesday_chef/2006/04/martha_rose_shu.html) i only use 1/4 cup of maple syrup and add in 1 ripe banana to replace the other 1/4...still super moist and not very sweet.

Here is another hearty, nutritious but not overly sweet muffin recipe: http://orangette.blogspot.ca/2012/10/i-stand-by-my-assessment.html

I'm not into cooking in the morning, so usually it's a large scoop of cottage cheese and whatever fruit we have laying around with a cup of milk (usually I start him with a hand full of Cheerios first). Sometimes yogurt or oatmeal instead. Other times I'll give him some of my bagel and cream cheese if we are on the go. Blueberry muffins are his favorite, but he doesn't get them more than a couple times a week.

Daycare breakfast is typically yogurt and fruit, and sometimes we'll send half an organic cereal bar along. At home we'll have pancakes and sometimes eggs. She's not that big on eggs right now. We've done peanut butter toast, which was a hit too. We haven't tried oatmeal in a while so maybe we'll give that a shot again.

@irene: the one I posted above calls for 2/3 cup sugar and 2tbsp honey. But I made it with no honey and only 1/3 cup sugar. Next time I plan to eliminate sugar and use honey.

I do fruit, protein, and a grain, in that order of importance. Fruits are usually blueberries, peaches, apples, plums, pears, strawberries, or whatever else is seasonal and around. Protein is usually yogurt, but might be turkey sausage or bacon (she won't eat eggs, tragically). Grain is cheerios, toast, bagels, potatoes, or pancakes. We eat really protein-y bread, too, so if she skips her protein for the morning she's still getting a good bit of it. And if she skips the bread (which she often does) I don't care.

scrambled eggs, pancakes and some fruit. Cheese optional (if he doesn't eat any of the previous things). And the scrambled eggs must be scrambled a certain way or he won't eat it.

I know I need to mix it up more but the results have been frustrating. I made a toasted sandwich with cheese and egg before, he peeled it apart and didn't quite eat anything except the toast. We used to make hard boiled eggs, he doesn't eat them anymore either. DH is against processed food so I didn't give him sausages or meat in the morning yet (unless if we go out to eat, that's an exception). I didn't want to give him cheerios either because I know he's eating a ton of those as snacks at school. Then, he doesn't eat yogurt in the morning (or he wouldn't take spoon feeding in the morning, and we are in a time crunch I can't let him feed himself (20 months) and make a mess).

ETA: I would love to find a recipe for a low/no sugar muffin because he eats those!

Cereal + milk and bananas if i have nothing ready. We also do scrambled eggs with toast, or toast with pb + j. Sometimes i'll give her a homemade muffin, oatmeal, or greek yogurt. She also likes smoothies, waffles and pancakes.

@Mrsjets: I really like Martha Rose Shulman's recipes because they never call for more than 1/4 to 1/3 cup of sugar in her recipes. I made blueberry quinoa muffins and LO really loved them (i just subbed blueberries for the cranberries) http://tomatotango.com/2010/11/16/cranberry-quinoa-muffins-100-whole-grain/

@locavore_mama: we ate spinach+kale quiche this morning for breakfast!

On school days lately the kids eat a lot of yogurt, frozen waffles, fruit, and the fridge oatmeal that was posted on the blog recently! We also freeze French toast or oatmeal bars and eat those during the week. Definitely mixing it up helps. I do have trouble getting in protein for breakfast though...
