We only use a stroller at the mall or expos. For things like shopping, Deere Boy walks, but we lost him at a HUGE AG expo last year (he was 4) and for now I keep him in a stroller at those things, just because it's easier to keep him reigned in. He's definitely older and more mature and knows better now, but that was the longest, scariest 10 minutes of my life.

My five year old still will sit in the stroller occasionally when we are out, but only because we already have it available for the 2 yr old. Also toward the end of the day, she still gets really tired, so I don't have issue with it, except when they fight over it. I guess my limit will be 6 but who knows.

Also meant to add- I think if you have a younger child who NEEDS the stroller, it's harder to make an older child walk. At which point a double stroller is probably the best option for certain trips, otherwise they'd take twice as long.

For us- not living in a walkable city- I'd say 3. But city living is completely different.

I saw a girl who HAD to be 8 SPILLING OUT of a stroller at the mall the other day. I was dumbfounded. She was too long, too tall, and too wide. And DEFINITELY old enough to walk. I couldn't believe it.

@Anagram: exactly this!

Around 4 or 5 probably, but honestly if I have a younger one and a double stroller, I'd be ok with a 6 yr old riding in it if it's faster and we're in a rush!

We stopped using it around 2. I think it was cause he was mostly uninterested in using it and it became more of a hassle than anything. We'd get halfway through the zoo or something and he had long ditched it and then I am pushing a big bulky stroller around. We were usually doing stuff with my dad or DH so they would just end up carrying him on their shoulders.

I think age 4 for long trips/walks. D1 is 2.5 years old and she likes to walk but sometimes asks for her stroller.

I think for city dwellers who don't use cars, 4-5 or however long they will ride in it because most kindergartner a aren't capable of walking several mikes a day. When I just walk to my dentist, it's a 2 mile round trip walk. Same thing with my pediatrician.... So I'd use it for a while. It's not just about capability, it's about speed. When I have an appt, I don't have time to wait for a 4 year old to walk a mile.

If I lived in car driving culture, I would stop much sooner because at the most the kids are expected to walk around the grocery store or something.

I'm thinking three would be my max? And I think that regardless of whether or not you use a stroller it's still important to work in some chill out time for LO's when out and about.

Two? We don't live in a city, so I get that that is a different ball game. If you were doing a ton of walking I see that being a pain. But I sometimes wonder about obesity and late stroller use.

Yeah, that's a tough one for me. I'll admit to having some judgement for older (4+) kids in strollers, but on the other hand, I often walk 3 or 4 miles in a day with my daughter. I really can't imagine her being willing to do that for quite a while, and I certainly wouldn't have the strength to carry her. So, who knows.

I don't know but we were at the farmers market today and I was surprised to see so many older kids in strollers. I was thinking "dang how do they manage to keep a 5 year old in the stroller?" I figured they would hate it by that age!

6 years old. Though, we don't typically use the stroller in general. I usually just wear him and I think that would end around 6 years old as well. At Disney Land he typically just runs around all day long and we only wear him home.

@CupQuakeWalk: it's not unusual for us to spend hours walking a day! A few months ago, we walked 5 miles... usually though, it's a lot less!! Today we probably walked about a mile all told.

Just sharing some data points and wondering if that impacts the calculations here...

3 or 4?? Not sure. My niece and nephew started living with us right after they turned 5 & 4. They were out of strollers completely by ages 3 &2, maybe even younger than that but they are exceptions. They had such a hard knock life early on.

Edit: changed my answer to include 4 too.

We took our 2 year old and our 4 year old out today without a stroller. We walked 5 blocks or so to a bus stop, took the bus to the museum, walked a few more blocks... and then reversed the trip a few hours later.

It wasn't so bad! However, the trip would have been soooo much easier with a stroller. That said, Charlie is 4 years old and we'd like to start using the stroller less and less over the coming years! I'm ok with him being in the stroller for long trips, but for short trips I'm hoping he can walk and use public transportation. At some point though, I'd like to ditch the stroller entirely... just not sure what that point should be.
