I read most of my news and DH listens to the radio. We don't turn on the news at home much. We feel the same way as you do about the news these days.

I don't like watching the news on TV anymore. I used to watch the news in the morning while I got ready for work but now that I stay home I don't. I prefer to read the news online. Then I can get to it on my own time and DD isn't exposed to it on TV.

I listen to NPR on the way into work in the morning and check news online throughout the day. Yes, a lot of it is depressing, but I think it’s incredibly important to stay connected to what’s going on in the world. So many of the “big news items” are intertwined. If you’re tuning most everything out, you might not get the full, overall picture of everything that’s going on and why one thing/event is leading to others and really understand the ramifications. It’s like when people talk about the Emanuel AME Church shootings as being some isolated attack (or an attack not prompted by racism, cough*Fox News*cough) – it just isn’t. Same with ISIS – they didn’t come from nowhere, and they are not just another terrorist group. Why are they so successful? Why are they so successful at recruiting young American and European teenagers? The more we know, the better we understand – IMO.

@lamariniere: Same here! I can't stand watching the news, even though the BBC has pretty great coverage and far less sensationalism than what I typically see on the major networks in the US, but it's still too depressing.

I read BBC, CNN, and The Guardian online every day, whilst also glancing at a few other online papers, but that's it. I can't handle all the horror and sadness in the daily news anymore.

I feel you! I still read a fair bit of news, but it tends to be from monthly periodicals like the Atlantic or New Yorker instead of "breaking news" headlines. The older I get, the more I find I'm overwhelmed and depressed by the evening news.

I listen to NPR. I find that I'm able to "disconnect" from it more if I'm not seeing photos/footage of whatever is happening. I feel informed but not engrossed, if that makes sense. If there's a news item I particularly want to read more about, I dig in on the internet.

I read my news instead of watch it. I've always been a news junkie, but it does make me more emotional now that I have children. I always follow headlines and I read in-depth reporting in The New Yorker and the NYT.

I like social media because it often gives me a different perspective than what the "mainstream" deems newsworthy & I can see what matters to people/what their opinions are through what they're retweeting.

And satirical news (daily show etc). Who doesn't like a little laughter with their bowl of despair?

Other than that, not my circus, not my monkeys.

I read online and catch the big events. I watch the news Once a month for weather events, elections etched. I don't like getting content delivered I can't control. I figure I will find out about big stuff somehow.

I read headlines but skip the news. I watch the morning news like Today but its after all the depressing stuff and mostly just on entertainment.
In the last few years all the terrible things in the world have really started to trigger my anxiety so I tend to live in a bubble. Not good, I know, but necessary for my sanity at the moment.

I'm the same as you. I read vague headlines on FB and if something really important is happening there are usually several posts on it and often times someone posts about it here. That's the extent of my news intake. My brain just can't handle anymore input than its already getting at this point and time.

I listen to NPR because it isn't sensationalized. I used to like dramas but now all I can emotionally handle is comedies. I've got no energy for crying about fictional characters.

I really don't follow the news at all. Yes, it's pretty uneducated of me but I don't have the time, energy, or interest at this point in my life. I glance at the local news and that's about it. But it's so very depressing.

I find I have zero interest in depressing fiction. I like to read and watch upbeat lighthearted books and shows for this reason. Enough horror in the real world.

When I was in college and law school I was incredibly up on all current events, good and bad, and followed pretty much all the horrible things that happened in the world and at home. We even had a "game" amongst my roommates and I where we'd watch the 10 o'clock local news every night and bet on how many people they'd talk about being murdered before the first commercial break.

And it was so f'ing depressing.

Seriously? I can't do anything about it. I know, I know... it only takes one person to make a change and if no one cares... blah blah blah. I get that. And I do remain vaguely aware of what is happening in the world and at home, but I don't have the emotional capacity to follow it anymore.

I don't know what is going on with the ISIS attacks beyond generally who they are and that they have been attacking. I didn't follow the hunt for the murderers beyond being aware they'd escaped and have now been captured/killed. I didn't follow the hunt for that white guy who killed all the people in that church a few week ago. I just... can't.

I still have my ideals/beliefs but I feel like focusing so much energy on keeping up with the bad shit happening in the world makes me a less happy person, so I just don't anymore. Even though sometimes I feel dumb because I don't know as much about current events as most people.

Wondering how others feel about all the bad news out there and if I'm the only one who sort of aims to remain at least a bit ignorant to all the details.
