I haven't given this a lot of thought yet but I know the day is coming. Generally we're not all that cautious about childproofing but wall sockets are my one thing because I have distinct memories of shocking myself by sticking my mom's keys into the socket. And melting the key, which pissed her off.

D can plug things in and unplug them. I think he was 5 when I started trusting him. I often remind him of safety rules.

We childproofed all of our sockets so they haven't plugged anything in yet.

We put all of our xmas lights on 3 remotes so the kids have been turning them on with those!

Umm I let my 3 year old plug in the christmas lights every day. I'm standing right there.

We were over at a friend's house, and their five-year-old son plugged something into the wall socket. The parents made it clear that this wasn't allowed, and that a parent had to be there to plug it in for him.

I don't think we really have a policy around wall sockets, probably because most everything the kids use is battery powered or non-electrical. Just looked online and thousands of kids go to the ER every year because of electricity mishaps, so it's definitely something we should figure out soon!

At some point, kids should be able to plug things in on their own if a parent is around (and eventually, when a parent isn't). Anyone have any thoughts on what a good age for that is?
