I actually think it's probably MORE important for the older kids to wear helmets, because it's more likely that they'll be riding at higher speed, on pavement, in riskier ways/settings, etc., than the littles!

Um, I would tell my husband, "You don't wear a helmet, you don't get to ride." So kids for sure! My sister fell off her bike around age eight or so, going down a hill very fast. She hit her head on the curb and the helmet had a crack in it. That would have been her head if she hadn't worn a helmet.

I believe everyone should wear a helmet while biking. It's definitely a rule we enforce with my 10 year old stepson. No helmet, no bike, no compromise.

It terrifies me when I see anyone without a helmet, child or adult. My neighbors kids never wear helmets and I so badly want to say something. DH is a TBI Survivor and our toddler wears a helmet on the trike I push him around in. Helmed for all, please!

@Maysprout: Yikes that will definitely make you think twice!

Ok thanks everyone for making me feel more sane haha. I keep seeing it being like, am I crazy for thinking that is a big deal?!

I have to admit I didn't always wear a helmet. Then I got hit by a car and watched my friends head crack the windshield of the car. Luckily we were both wearing helmets then and she didn't even have a concussion. So I'm pretty pro-helmet now.

@looch: It totally could be. I've seen kids riding with their helmets hanging on the handle bars.

I will definitely enforce the helmet rule as much as I can. If I catch him riding without he will have the bike taken away and probably some other privileges.

I have a coworker that cycles, he was leaving work one day and was hit by a drunk driver. He went completely under the car. The helmet saved his life. He ended up with a broken leg and some major contusions, but no head injury.

@looch: That's what I was thinking but they never have them on the bike! I guess they could stash them at a friend's? It is so bizarre to me that its so common to see them without!

@Foodnerd81: That's actually how I started noticing, my 3.5 year old pointed it out!

I didn't always wear a helmet growing up, fell off my bike in third grade, and to this day I do not remember that day and night. I'm lucky that's the only lasting effect. And the real kicker is even after that I didn't always wear it- like @looch: said I would take it off after I got around the corner!

So yeah, helmet every single time (even now on her little balance bike). Dh and I do too. When we see an adult riding on the street without a helmet my toddler points it out. "Mommy where's his helmet?" I tell her he forgot it and is going home to get it. :silly:

I wonder in the instances of the older kids if they're taking the helmets off after they leave the house?

@Truth Bombs: @Dahlia: yep. You bike, you wear a helmet. Period. I generally see kids here wearing them but so many adults don't (and we live in a bike friendly city). It's crazy.

My kids will wear helmets or they won't ride. Period. We model this when we ride bikes and I even make my husband wear a helmet when he's testing something out on his bike and just in the driveway.

I watched a kid fall of his bike the other day. He was crossing a busy rode, tried to get on the sidewalk and his bike tire twisted. He fell off and the bike fell on top of him. He very narrowly missed hitting his head on the curb. Thank God he was okay, but it drives home how dangerous it can be and why you NEED A HELMET.

Uh, I think ANYONE on a bike should wear a helmet. Regardless of age. If I were to ride a bike on the road, I sure as hell would have a helmet on.

Now that school is out around here I keep seeing kids riding bikes everywhere with no helmets and it drives me crazy! In our state it is actually a law that they should wear a helmet if under age 16, but I have not seen a single kid 10-15ish wearing a helmet.

Am I just being overprotective? I feel like for my own kids even when they are bigger it's a "you wear a helmet or you don't have a bike" type of thing for me.
