I usually keep a small bin in the back seat, I drive a small car so I can reach if they can't and they can drop them in when done. For long trips I section it off and make part of it a trash can too. It usually works pretty well.

I rotate 1 of 4 small touch and feel books. If its a longer drive I'll add something else but it usually just the book.

We have 3-4 toys scattered along the backseat. I think whenever we switch to FF we will get some sort of hanging mesh bag.

@looch: my son is the same way! He was flipping through a magazine on the floor in the living room this morning and I left him to clean up breakfast. I met him later in the playroom and when I went to the living room to get something the magazine was back on the ottoman! He's 17 months! Haha. I probably had a hand in teaching him this habit though  .

We allow 1-2 soft toys,(1 baby doll) and usually they stay in the car. Lately if we don't have a baby doll with us wherever we go she asks for one. So there's one in each car and one in the stroller!

@TurtleDoves: lol, if she falls asleep in the car she will only sleep 30 minutes. If she falls asleep in her bed she sleeps 2-3 hours. Plus then I'm home and can do things other then just sit in the car. I do anything to keep her awake until we are home!

@Dandelion: yes.... But lo is in that stage where she just throws it on the floor, she can't reach the pouches yet.

@TurtleDoves: my lo gets bored with just one toy pretty quickly. For longer trips, and for trying to keep her awake so she'll nap good in her bed, I like variety.

No system because I only allow one at a time. It stays in his carseat when he's not in it and that's it. It's an Elmo "cell phone". at the moment. Other than that, I have a few small things (light up keys and a fabric book) in my diaper bag.

I have a bag that has toys for the car and when we go out. It lives in front of the car seat, on the floor, and contains a magnetic drawing board, a bead maze and some building stuff. I don't want to over complicate the system, this works fine.

eta: my son is super neat, he puts all his toys away when he's done...I didn't teach him this, lol!

Now that DS is 6, he just brings what he chooses in the car and he takes in back in the house when we're done.

Before, though, we'd always just have toys strewn all over. I think I'll have to come up with a better system for this next kid during toddler years.

When I was a kid, I'd use the pouches on the back of the seats...do you have those in your car?
