We warm bottles, but only because she won't drink it any other way. We tried, and lost. Oh well.

my kid didn't get bottles often and i think some were warm, some room temp and some cold. just depended on if the BM was frozen, defrosted or already in a bottle in the fridge and who was giving her the bottle.

We warmed bottles for a while since DS didn't like his milk cold. It wasn't until after he turned 1 that he started taking his milk cold.

As for cereal, we did oatmeal instead since that's what the pedi recommended. We did it for about 2 weeks before starting purees. Then another 2 weeks after that we did BLW. He took to that much better than purees.

I never made them super warm just kind of room temperature. I've heard the cold milk can irritate their bellies.

However, I very much despise cereal in bottles. Major choking hazard. I didn't do rice cereal with my son as a first food. We later used it to thicken purée's because he was spitting up. The pediatrician also said it was a good filler for babies who are on the heavier side. It fills the belly with less calories. When babies are struggling to gain weight you want calorie dense food and cereal really isn't.

Any bottles of breastmilk were warmed up a bit to room temp by submerging them in a mug of warm water. No clue when daycare stopped warming them lol not my problem! She had no issues with a transition to cold cows milk. Also no to rice cereal - we did BLW with no purées. The idea of spoon feeding never appealed to me! My husband looooves feeding dd apple sauce and yogurt even though she can do it herself.

I never started with warming bottles because I didn't want my LO to develop that preference. It helped a lot when we were out and about and weren't able to warm them easily.

Since LO was okay with it, we gave bottles cold. It made life so much easier! But i would have warmed ten if he needed it. I think rice cereal is a totally different issue than bottle warming and having as a first food is different from adding it to bottles, which really shouldn't be done (unless the baby has reflux and you use it as a thickener).

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think the major concern with bottles are babies who sleep all night sucking in a bottle in their crib--so the sugars can rot the teeth. In a lot of south Asian countries, even the doctors tell parents to keep the bottle. I guess they just brush after? My niece on DHs side just dropped her night time bottle at 3.5.

Neither my husband not I have ever had a cavity though, so maybe we just have genetically good enamel or something, who knows.

I don't understand the cultural lines thing either..?

We never did rice cereal and we never did any food-baesd things to make our LO STTN or drop MOTN bottles.

We do warm bottles and I hate it. We didn't start out doing it. Initially when we gave her bottles of BM from the fridge we just warmed to (approx) room temp because if we gave them cold she puked. Then we switched her to all formula and she was not a good eater at all. We had all sorts of various feeding/food refusal issues so I tried warming the bottle to warm (not room temp) and omg--- she ate! It was like a switch flipped. Before she was a crappy and inconsistent eater and it felt like we were fighting for every ounce. Once we started warming she finished almost every bottle with no issue. So we do it. But I think it is totally annoying and I would recommend anyone avoid it unless you really HAVE to.

At daycare, they warmed bottles in a cooler of hot water. She was EBF and only got bottles at home if I wasn't there to feed her, and we warmed them up in a mug of hot water. I used Playtex Nursers, and that method worked for us since we couldn't use a bottle warmer.

With DS1 I premade bottles of formula ahead of time and kept them in the fridge. For the 1st 3-4 months, I would take the chill off the bottle. I'd fill a cup with hot water and put the bottle in it for a couple of minutes. I quickly stopped that because I figure he could get used to it cold. As a friend told me, do you warm up whole milk? I have a nephew who at 7 still requests his milk warm. With DS2, I just gave him cold bottles right from the start. Yes, my mom and MIL thought it was weird and asked why I didn't warm the bottles (we're Hispanic). I told them why and they saw the babies didn't care.

And I didn't follow any specific feeding guideline. I started with oatmeal, gave purées, gave my food, whatever.

LO would only take warmed bottles in the beginning, now her pickiness depends on how hungry she is and will sometimes be fine with cold milk. She only takes bottles when I'm at work though. We're doing BLW and skipped rice cereal but actually bought some baby oatmeal so she can have cereal in the mornings with me, we do kind of baby led spoon feeding! It's super easy to make a small batch with BM (like a tablespoon) and it's organic and fortified. I was trying to find an oatmeal we could both eat but I like instant steel cut oats and finding that without added salt or sugar near us has been a failure so far. So far it's growing on her!

ETA: we just warm her bottles in a Pyrex measuring cup with hot water. We don't give her enough bottles to warrant a real warmer and she'll take most of them a bit cooler now anyhow!

Our tap water gets really hot, so if we take a bottle out of the fridge we just fill a glass with water and set the bottle in it for a minute or two to take the chill off. The only bottle we do every day is the 1am feeding, and I just take the bottle out of the fridge when we go to bed and let it get to room temp on its own that way. DH prefers the warmer over the tap water method, but I think it is more trouble than it's worth and hate having something extra on the counter. Neither of my babies have ever needed their bottles warm, thankfully.

I premade bottles/formula for the day and warmed it up in the warmer. I know some people think it's just as well done in a mug or something but that was not my experience. It was a lot easier once I knew exactly where to set the warmer, whereas with a mug I had to change the water a couple times before it was warm enough. If I was making a bottle on the go, it didn't need to be warmed. And obviously if it was breastmilk I warmed it but that was short lived. I went with whatever lo drank best.

We didn't do that many bottles (bf from the tap) so when she did have a bottle it was usually previously frozen milk. So yeah, we warmed it from frozen, but didn't make it very warm. She never had rice cereal and we did blw. Asfar as cultural... I'm white and American. Does that make a difference? I feel like it's just something our moms and grandmas say about the rice cereal to sleep through the night.
