The front half of our house isn’t insulated well so if we cranked the heat, we’d just be cooking in our bedrooms and pumping money out the window. Our bedrooms are much better insulated. We have it at 66-68 during the day when we’re home and I just put it at 60 for nighttime but I doubt our house will get that low to even kick on. I like wearing a sweater and socks inside during the winter because it feels cozy. My kids would be naked constantly no matter what, except I just realized that the baby likes to be warm so I put a space heater in her room on warm because I’m freaking tired and she apparently wakes up because she’s cold!

66 when we are home and awake, 64 when we are asleep, 60 when we are away. Our house is 100+ years old and a little drafty, so it is often quite chilly, but we are both super frugal. We are all much happier since we invested in warm slippers!

67 when we're home and awake, 62 when we leave the house. And we used to turn it down to 64 at night, but we're worried about DD being cold because she doesn't keep the covers on and her room is always one of the coldest.

When DH is out of town, though, I keep it at 70 when I'm home and awake :)

I was not meant to be cold. Our winters aren't even that bad here in Georgia, but I keep it 72 during the day downstairs (upstairs is zoned and we keep doors shut) and 66 at night when we head upstairs to bed. Upstairs stays at 69 degrees.

To be fair, heat isn't a big money or fight issue around here - but bring up A/C settings in the Summer and it gets ugly. :silly:

68-69 when we are home during the day, 67 at night. Any colder than that, and we all feel cold. It's 62 when we leave the house.

We also have Ecobee.

I should add that I have a babysitter/PT nanny from a warm country and sometimes she will crank it up to like 73 in winter because she's always cold. But she's only at our house for 2-3 hours a day, so I let her do what she wants. Although sometimes I change it remotely back to something like 70, lol.

@Hypatia: Oh yes, a wood stove. My parents are trying to do the same with a fire place and are very frustrated as well. We live in a TINY cabin, so with the woodstove it is extremely easy to heat the place with minimal wood.

@Mrs. Turtle: Do you have a wood stove? We have a traditional fireplace, and when we went without heat for three weeks this winter, it was awful trying to keep the fire going. I had to haul in more wood every 30 minutes, and only that room stayed relatively warm. We’d have a big blazing fire and the next room would be 45 degrees. I think the record was our bedrooms getting down to 40 at night (the girls slept with us under an electric blanket).

We live in a log cabin, so I expected it to work better than it did. But i guess it’s true what they say about traditional fireplaces being super inefficient.

I don't like to be cold and I don't like to be wearing coats indoors (kidding, but not really), so we keep it at 69 when we are home. I find myself turning the heat down on the weekends, because once I start moving around, I get warm.

At night we do turn it lower, to about 65 and then we have it set so that it warms up again in the morning and then turns down when we leave for the day.

We have humid summers, so we also run the central air in the summer more than I would prefer, but it's not worth getting into an argument over.

@Mrs. Turtle: I love wood heat (but maybe not the actual work involved). We had a wood furnace and fireplaces for heat in our log house when I was growing up in British Columbia. It was lovely, but I was there from 4-8 years old, so I didn't have to do any of the work.

I lived for 18 years in CT where my family kept the winter temp at 65-68 and I HATED it, lived with a constant space heater, and swore I'd up the temp once I had my own house.

Fast forward to now and I live in Phoenix. We keep our house at 71 in the winter. Life is too short to be shivering in my own home and I don't like wearing 3x layers.

Sorry, this is a really privileged post. But it's my current truth. I save money by scrimping in a lot of ways others wouldn't like (cloth diapers and hand towels, hanging laundry to dry, etc). But saving money by having a cold house is not a strategy of mine.

I don’t think I have ever turned the heat higher than 79!

Day time it’s usually 68, at night down to 62 downstairs in the living areas. Upstairs (bedrooms) are usually in the 65 range- but our house heats unevenly so that means one LOs room is close to 60 and the others is 68. Neither complain. The master is almost always 62- we are rarely in there during the day and like it cool at night.

@cake2017: so you set your house cooler in the summer than the winter?

ETA: we are in MA so it gets pretty cold in the winter, but not super hot in the summer, aside from a few heat waves here and there- but nothing like a phoenix summer.

We don't use the heat much and only use it because of the kids. On our coldest nights I will turn it between 65-67. If it seems too cold I will bump it to 68 when we wake up to just get the chill off. DH and I will usually open our window overnight cause we love the cooler temps. Keeps our room cooler and doesn't effect the rest of the house. But we live in the south so we very very rarely go below freezing.

71°F in the fall/winter due to my circulatory conditions and many fires in the fire place when it is super cold out. During the spring around 62°F and, in the summer, the AC goes on. When we leave for family trips, the house is set at 62°F. (I was meant for a tropical climate. 😉)
